      Aoki was a badass. Dudes got a jiu jitsu submission named after him. He's still competing in his 40s in grappling. Just recently had a match with Mikey musumeci.

      My all time favorite was Gary Goodridge screaming at the guy that was punching him from bottom guard. "Again! Again! Woohoo! Child's play!" And then he commenced to smash him with one punch.

    Great video. Especially the 50s rivalries reaching into modern day.
    I became a super fan bakc when Tito was running through the Lion's Den. One of my favorite fighter rivalries

      Even though Tito was the “bad guy”, I actually have to root for him instead of the Lion’s Den, because he trained in BJJ, whereas the Lion’s Den fighters trained in Catch Wrestling.

      @@ChainsGone2012 I use Tito Ortiz and Ted Kaczynski as case studies as polar opposites. Tito barely finished high school, sold drugs in his youth, got addicted to drugs in his youth, got a lengthy juvenile criminal record, and had no future. And he went on to become the longest running UFC light heavyweight champ (before Jon Jones).
      Ted Kaczynski skipped 2 grades, had the best dissertation of 1975, and became the youngest professor in the history of UC-Berkeley at 25. And now he is serving a life sentence in a federal penitentiary for domestic terrorist acts.
      You never know how people will end up.

      Back then I disliked him as a person because of his trash talking. His trash talk reminded me of the disrespect I got from bullies in high school.
      I didn’t know back then that it was just an act.

      Ironically Sakuraba trained in BJJ in 1996, under Enson Inoue, before his fights with Gracies. It is ridiculous that he would represent any opposition to BJJ.

      I was looking for this comment and yeah he was. Mark Kerr didn't have a long career but at his peak he was absolutely terrifying. Mestre Hulk just slid under the ropes and left during their fight; Branko Cikatić looked like a frightened child before purposely getting himself disqualified; and you mentioned Duarte's yelps of fear and playing dead.
      FWIW I think Mark Kerr should be in the UFC Hall of Fame for winning back to back heavyweight tournaments.

    Had no idea that Sakuraba was involved in any kind of rivalry between judo and BJJ. I never found any evidence that he trained in judo. Ironically, he trained in BJJ in 1996, under Enson Inoue, before any of his fights with Gracies. In addition to his Catch Wrestling, Freestyle Wrestling, and Muay-Thai. He later trained in BJJ again under Sergio Penha after his fights with Gracies. It is ridiculous that he would represent any “opposition” to BJJ.

      We all know #1 would be Gaethje vs Ferguson. I think you would have to extend that to not necessarily losing streaks, but just a fall from dominance, like Werdum vs Fedor. It's not like Fedor kept losing over and over after that, but he definitely wasn't the same as he was before.

    Just think of the irony of a rivalry between BJJ and Luta Livre. The modern reality is that loads and loads of people train in and compete in Luta-Livre Esportiva. They just don’t call it that. They call it, “BJJ No-Gi”. In many cases, they erroneously call it, “BJJ”.

    Was Ronda x Bethe even a rivalry though? Without the UFC marketing machine, that's just a 40 year old accountant (Dana's words) that managed to beat an old vet who couldn't keep up as the division got younger and a girl who was only there because her friend pulled some strings. Really makes you wonder how bad Marina Shafir was that even the biggest MMA star in the world (at the time) couldn't get her a job.
