Apply a generous amount of lock tight as vibrations may rattle it loose 👍🏽

I have been changing oil in my vehicles for 40 years and never thought about either one of these tips. Thanks 👍
But with motorhomes the oil gets changed annually due to so few miles get put on them. At least that’s my life.
Then why are u changing the oil 😂
I just change the engine every time I’m due for an oil change.

My friend here in the UK had a rover, first oil change it died so he changed the engine, replacement engine was £250. realising this he just run every engine into the ground then replaced the whole engine rather than do regular oil changes.

Please be aware, viewers, that not all filter cans are the replaceable type.
The hero we didn’t know we needed
Also be aware that this is ok for the replacing type. 🤷🏾♂️
This comment has to be a joke. Obviously you would not do this to an oil filter, if your oil filter did not have a replacement

Garbage truck mechanic here: make sure you get the filter loose first. Sometimes there a fight to get off. Also make sure you have one to replace. One time a guy punched a hole in one and we were out of stock on that filter and he didn’t check prior. We had to make a special run to Mack that day just for a filter.
Try taking off an oil filter that hasn't been off in 15 years it sat there for so long that I just replaced the engine and glad I did block had enough sledge to fill a 5 gallon bucket
My dad always keep filters in each car in case the oil change place didn't have one, I bet it happened to him.
Here's another garbage truck mechanic drive a screwdriver through the side of it and it's coming off. 😮

Justo dudé que era un mal consejo de hacerle un agujero al filtro, porque podría ser inexistente.

Lol. You stupid
i mean thats how i work on my bike.
I used to do the hole punch in the oil filter too but now I’ve learned an even easier and less messy method. Simply use a plastic disposable ice coffee cup. Starbucks venti or Dunkin medium size works perfectly. Roughly 22 oz. After loosening the filter, cup the whole filter and spin it off with cup in your hand. The oil will begin to pour into the cup. Not anywhere else. Then gently let the old filter slide into the same cup. Catch remaining dripping oil in the plastic cup and be ready with a new filter once it has slowed to a slow enough drip. Replace filter and done. I got all my friends doing this and they too agree that this has been the best method yet.
Yeah I just use a Ziploc bag. Not foolproof but it really helps
Interesting idea. Still this job is not oil free from hands
I think this only works when the oil filter is vertical, my Nissan Pathfinder filter is at a 45° angle, the oil starts leaking from the seal, and I’m not sure if it will actually drain directly into the cup. But I’ll try it.
It’s weird how many of the comments are implying that he’s damaging the car. The oil filter here is the replaceable kind. You change it with your oil. Oil pans get messy.

When changing the oil filter on some of the older semi trucks the filters are huge and mounted straight up. So we always do this and then go drain the oil pan and then the filter is done draining and more manageable when you get to it.
Yes this also work thanks
Makes sense for that application but not for regular cars
@@cuznblue I've never thought to try it on a regular car. But some of our riggs have some damn heavy filters in some very awkward spots lol
Absolutely. I have been a licensed heavy truck mechanic for over 30 years and that's how I've done it all along. Another good thing is that if you accidentally drop it you don't make as much of a mess 👍🇨🇦
Woah, the rare sticky filter gasket! I just crack filters loose, give em a spin at mach 1 as i duck for cover. It'll spin all the way off and land in the pan
That's what I used to do. 😂 the sad part is I knew about the punch method. Lmao.
This rare sticky o ring will cost you an engine if you don’t see it lol.
I Have a 2014 checy sonic ajd the oil filter screws out the other dirextion, top down, as u reach from the hood of the car. I thought more cars did this. Its an eco tech engine 🤷♂️
Bro I spin that shhh off so fast that the oil doesn’t have time to drip 😂
Gotta love it when the filter bounces around in the drainer and flings oil absolutely fucken everywhere
I personally like to use red lock tight on the threads and jb weld on tbe gasket. That's the real pro tip, never leaks again.
And always use German torque specs.
I use the blue thread lock myself
Very few people actually understand how funny this comment is. Well done lol
Now Big Oil Filter cant scam you into buying more GJ
Gracias Grazie Thank You I Learned Something New after 60 years Tinkering With Motors
The only time I would do this is when I haven't checked I have the correct replacement filter..
True setup for success
Worst case scenario throw some tape at it. It'll hold long enough
Regardless would have to double check if correct filter, wouldn’t plan on driving after that initial oil loss but hey, you can always just dump the catch pan back into the engine right
People who dump straight onto the grass has left the chat
Or spin the one you bought on before you drain the oil to see if it fits.
Tech tip: Make sure to leave the old gasket on the filter housing and double gasket to make sure it doesn't leak.
Noooo😂
Yeah no way. Stupid misinformation.

Y’all didn’t order it from an auto parts store?
That only works when you have a vertical oil filter. My "red block" Volvos had right side of the block oil filters that were mostly horizontal. Access only under the exhaust manifold behind either the alternator or the power steering pump. Had to unscrew them and let the oil run down over the right engine mount into the pan. My 2000 F150 4x4's oil filter on the 5.4 Triton V8 is buried on the engine left side up above the front drive axle and differential. I have to jack the front up to drop the left wheel and suspension to put lots of extensions on the oil filter remover disk to loosen it through the wheel well. Then underneath to spin it off and remove it pretty much blindly. Ford was "nice enough" to provide a small shroud below the filter to duct the spilling oil into one point to put the tray under it. Manufacturers don't always cooperate! My Mazda CX9 has a nice vertical oil filter at the front of the under carriage, very accessible! Thanks for the tip. I'll definitely use it!
Then make the hole onthe side, you dumbass.
I've got a 2001 F150 with the 5.4 in it. It's stupid the way they mounted the filter there. The engineer that designed this needs to have oil dripped on his head!!!
My 99 Dodge Stratus literally has a 90° angle oil filter so this tip is not going to work whatsoever. Doesn't even get my hands dirty in the first place😅 is tilt the side upwards that doesn't have the threads and you're good😊
@@MikeFury420 Thanks Mike. My Ford truck's oil filter is so hidden that I don't think there's enough room to even visually attempt that tilt. As I'm unscrewing it oil begins to run out around the threads. By the time it's off the threaded pipe half of the oil in it is running down the small Ford provided chute to the catch pan. My Mazda SUV has a vertical filter in the open for that I am grateful. Thanks for the input.
Cordless drill better instead of 2 items(hammer & punch)
I do this with my oil pan too, comes out clean every single time.
That releases the pressure buildup in the filter AND also quickly lowers the oil level in the filter, reducing oil spill when removing.
Do the same thing to the oil pan while you’re at it. It’s faster than finding the right socket and then having to ask someone whose diet doesn’t consist mostly of soy to loosen the drain plug for you. Use flex seal to seal the hole. #techtips
Now this guy’s got it💯

We learn something new everyday. It does stop the mess. Great tip.
Messy after the oil drains and you have to unscrew the filter off
And when the wind blows you're screwed...messy too.
As most do it in a garage.. like in the video
For decades, I was left looking like a horse veterinarian who’d just treated a lower intestinal blockage. Thanks for the tip!
😂😂😂
weird analogy
Did you smell as such?
Tech tip....make sure you loosen the filter first. That way you know you can get it off the car before putting a hole in it. I have seen this happen more than you realize
About 45 years ago I watched some college kids try to change their oil and oil filter. The oil filter was on super tight so they thought it would be a good idea to drive a screw driver through the oil filter with a hammer. All they got was a ripped to pieces oil filter that was still super tight and stuck.
I wonder if they figured out to coat the gasget with oil before installing the new filter.
This is why I always tell people to never ever do the "Ye ol' screwdriver" trick. Once you rip open that sheet metal shell it gets way harder to remove. They make numerous types of filter wrenchs, anyone getting into mechanics or just doing their own maintenance should invest in a good one or two.
@@jtreworks While I still think popplng a hole in the bottom of the filter is a much cleaner way to change the filter as I myself have gotten a sleeve full of oil, it won't compromise the integrity of the filter. Anyway, I own a big fleet of cars and I change my own oil, coating the filter gasget with a film of oil, I just don't have this problem. And besides, my own oil changes cost me about 18 dollars. Not 90 bucks.
@@styldsteel1 I think you might have misunderstood what the screwdriver trick is. Long time ago when a spin-on oil filter was on too tight it was common for mechanics to drive a screwdriver into the side of the oil filter to use as leverage to spin the filter off. Back then it wasn't a problem since usually the filters were made of heavier gauge steel. With modern filters using this trick usually tears open the filter instead of spinning it loose leaving you with pretty much nothing to grab onto. Yes I do agree poking a hole in the filter just to drain the oil out of it isn't a problem.
Bro said 45 years like it was last week or something 😂
Fitters used to do this in my workshop and found they had the wrong oil filter and we didn’t have the correct one in stock so be careful using this method
You cant reuse an old one. So what's the problem? You gotta get a new one.
@@gerald7044he meant that they started the oil change process without grabbing the new filter, and realized they had it out of stock, and now the customer had to wait untill getting the replacement one in, because couldn't use the old one that gat dmg by the puncture :(
@@gerald7044you can reuse and old one if it doesn't have this hole in it
@@carlosvogrincic4852 Still same difference. Either gotta give the car back to the cust or make them wait an extra hr for the filter to be delivered. A shady shop would just not bother even changing it.
@@kb25j thats what they are saying. Careful doing this because you could have the customer be without their car for longer than necessary if you dont have the correct new filter and have to wait for a new one to come in. You can't give the customer back their car since you already ruined the old filter. They now have to wait.
But you can't reinstall it and charge the customer for a new one if you do that!😂
It's actually required to get a new oil filter every time you get an oil change standard practice it's included in the oil change price every single time
@@bonnyboitotally missed the joke ... Lol 😂
@@bonnyboilook up....that's the joke going WAY over your head.

@@doctahwho - I've been changing my own oil for the last 15 years. But before that, I would take a Sharpie and mark the filter. Just to make sure they changed it.
I do wanna add that if your filter is horizontally mounted AND you have vertical access to it from the bottom you can punch it from the side and still drain the oil in the same manner as in this video. You will also have the added benefit of being able to use the punch to getting a tight fitting filter unscrewed off. We did this in this exact manner at Norfolk southern railroad when I worked as an electrician there. Well the mechanics did it I just seen it done many many times usually with a heavy duty screwdriver but punch will work just the same
