Garbage truck mechanic here: make sure you get the filter loose first. Sometimes there a fight to get off. Also make sure you have one to replace. One time a guy punched a hole in one and we were out of stock on that filter and he didn’t check prior. We had to make a special run to Mack that day just for a filter.
Try taking off an oil filter that hasn't been off in 15 years it sat there for so long that I just replaced the engine and glad I did block had enough sledge to fill a 5 gallon bucket
My dad always keep filters in each car in case the oil change place didn't have one, I bet it happened to him.

Justo dudé que era un mal consejo de hacerle un agujero al filtro, porque podría ser inexistente.

Tech Tip: Absolutely make sure the replacement filter is the correct one before punching hole in old filter.
I used to do the hole punch in the oil filter too but now I’ve learned an even easier and less messy method. Simply use a plastic disposable ice coffee cup. Starbucks venti or Dunkin medium size works perfectly. Roughly 22 oz. After loosening the filter, cup the whole filter and spin it off with cup in your hand. The oil will begin to pour into the cup. Not anywhere else. Then gently let the old filter slide into the same cup. Catch remaining dripping oil in the plastic cup and be ready with a new filter once it has slowed to a slow enough drip. Replace filter and done. I got all my friends doing this and they too agree that this has been the best method yet.
Yeah I just use a Ziploc bag. Not foolproof but it really helps

Even a slight incline will do the trick and if you're more comfortable changing your oil filter the same way as always no problem, you can just step out from underneath leave the oil pan still dripping, bring the car down, jack it up from the side for a minute to get that oil on the filter to drain and then jack it up again the way you always have and you should be able to get it out with out the mess.
