As a former Security Investigator and Manager, I appreciate you showing people how easy it is to add video protection to their homes. Being fairly tech savvy I feel confident that this is a security system that can be implemented by most competent computer users thanks to your well presented build.
    Thanks for putting this together.

    • @psdaengr911
      @psdaengr911 Před 5 lety +6

Robert Jackson Your confidence is misplaced; you are mistaken. I'm an engineer who designed actual security systems where a failure in security would be a life and death situation. Video was used in those facilities not for security but as an information and management tool by onsite professional security staff. I also worked for a UL central alarm station, whose function is to react to alarms. Alarms don't provide security, they report a loss of it. Providing security is hard. Security is protection and safety, not history or narrative of failures to provide them.
Video isn't security. Video isn't extra insurance. Video, like fire, door and widow bugs is surveillance Only when used properly by someone trained, ready and able to use video as a management information tool does it add value by supplementing a security system.
Video cameras might provide pictures of your home being entered. That isn't security. Your security was lost when the assailant or burglar entered the structure. Insurance isn't security to protect an asset, but a payment for losing that asset - your life or property.
The difference between surveillance, security, insurance is simple. Here is a clear example. There are several video recordings of Laquan McDonald being shot. He had surveillance. He had no security. He is dead. If he had life insurance he personally derived no benefit from it or from the trial and conviction of his shooter.
You could ring a property with video cameras with motion detection software connected with a standby generator and 4G internet service. If I wanted to, I could circumvent that surveillance, enter that property unobserved and enter a structure. All it would take is some observation and a few things anyone could buy at most Dollar Stores for cash. Most homeowners already have those items, but with purchases spread across several stores over weeks I couldn't be identified or found by a security investigator using just video- even if there were video surveillance videos from the "break in" and the stores.
A security investigator doesn't provide security, but follows up after security has been broken. A competent protection specialist who is interested in assuring safety and security should and would admit that video cameras don't provide security. That good doors, good locks and entry-resistant ground accessible windows can.
Unless there were detached physical perimeter barriers AND an alert and capable response team on-site WITH someone or something monitoring the video, that property isn't physically protected against intrusion.
You've probably heard that after 911 the national security agencies publicly acknowledged that the security failure was due to lack of humint- human intelligence gathering and response assets, the[at they were relying too much on electronic systems to monitor what was happening. The US department armed forces was facetiously renamed the Defense Department, when its only proven effective ability for the nation is attack, either preemptive or reactive. It's good at what it is allowed to do, but that isn't national defense, because of the Man in the Middle and rules of engagement. The chain of command impedes the process of detection, permission and reaction.
Home "security" has the same issues. If surveillance isn't accompanied by barriers and early, effective response, you are not safe.
Don't let anyone get away with saying video is security. It's not.

@@psdaengr911 I'm pretty sure the OP doesn't think that the *only* security device needed for a homeowner are some IP home security cameras.
It's also simply unnecessary to think that the average homeowner needs to have such a secure setup. I mean unless you are a targeted individual (i.e high net worth individual or you store easily transported valuables on the property), then you are likely just going to be dealing with the run-of-the-mill smash and grab crook that just wants to go after the homes that have zero visible security. There's actually a video that was put on YT by the Denton PD and they are interviewing the supposed biggest burglar in North Texas. During the interview, he says that if he saw a wireless camera he would just skip the house every time because, according to him, wireless cameras are impossible to bypass as you cannot cut a wire. He was completely oblivious to the fact that a $100 frequency jamming device could take down those cameras.
I think a lot of the times in the security industry we are so aware of the many vulnerabilities that we begin to assume that the bad guys must also be aware of those vulnerabilities and have the knowledge/skills to exploit them, but in my experiences it is not simply the case and the average middle class homeowner is just dealing with the typical low level thief that just looks for the home that's empty with zero security. There's always a few of them in the neighborhood (usually much more than a few).
Now if you are being specifically targeted, then that's a completely different story and you have to then start doing much more threat intelligence gathering so you get an idea of the capabilities of your attacker. If they have plenty of time and money to spend on observing you and intelligence, then you are probably fucked.

@@psdaengr911 You do realize that you can setup online motion detection that would send you an alert and video stream right as someone is approaching your property / opens your door? You then can call the cops right away and if you're living in a modern city they would be on site in 5 mins or so. Or you can call the neighbors, or your security company of choice that would be closer. You don't need humans to monitor the cameras in this day and age. Even without artificial intelligence we still have a lot of plain algorithmic ways to detect motion with a good efficacy. And if you throw a 300$ gpu on top then you can even run some neutral network for this stuff. This video is great, I'm going to build this right away for my home setup.

Or...One can buy a 4+ camera system which includes DVR and live access through the net. Starting at around $200. The DVR's can usually store up to 30 days of continuous video. No subscription needed. On top of that, one can put the DVR where ever they see fit as to not be found. Some are even wireless. And in conjunction with a dummy box, intruders would have a hard time stealing the footage. The owner of a store I used to work for got one of these. I was able to monitor graveyard employees in real time as well as hear anything going on because it had mics also.

Great video. I'd really love to see the written guide, and also, it'd be super cool to see a replacement for the "Ring video doorbell pro" which has a similar business model to Nest (FUCKED!), but makes super sweet doorbell cameras.
Basically; the difference would be the Ring uses DC straight from the doorbell wiring, and we'd need to figure out a way to wire up a transmitter/receiver capable of providing signal to both mechanical and digital doorbells.
I don't think it'd be too hard to do, and improve upon greatly, their design leaves a lot to be desired as is. The potential application of a camera built in to the button would be a good starting place, or even upgrading the infrared night vision to a better IR emitter, or even one you could mount in better locations than directly under the camera.
Although my knowledge of wifi protocols/signal transmission and programming is limited, I'm certified to work with DC electronics, and I'd be happy to work with you guys on this if you want an extra set of hands. I'm a little irritated with Ring.
Regardless, hit me back on here if you end up doing anything with this! Thanks for all the information over the years!
Also, Linus, you need a new shirt.

I actually used MotionEye for the last year and I still use it. I used it on RPi 3 with USB and network cameras, fot the most time it works but, when I added 2 more (professional) IP cams things gone wrong. Low fps, often crashes, the rpi 3 simply couldn't handle the load, so I upgraded to MotionEye) not MotionEyeOS) running on Debian on an old laptop way more powerful then the pi. The laptop sits inside (not in a metal security box outside) and every camera is IP now. It is simply excellent but it required some tweaking. What I recommend: either buy normal network cameras and run MotionEye on an old laptop or buy a Raspberry pi zero, plug in the official camera module, install MotionEye and run it in fast network camera mode (it only works with the official module) or bui a Raspberry pi 3+ (for the speed) connect up to a maximum of 3 USB cameras and use the streaming link to integrate that into your MotionEye NVR running on a Debian machine (performance is simply better on Debian) warning! On a Raspberry pi (any flavor) the system won't be able to handle more then 3 cameras (either IP or USB) at once, everything will lag badly. Also the max resolution in the rpi case is 720p 10FPS, more then that and it's useless. I strongly recommend MotionEye in this kind of configuration, works absolutely great for me

I've also set up an Arlo system which is like $400 for a camera (and home station which it requires), these aren't directly comparable as the Arlo are wireless and outdoor ready, but as for software the Wyze app is much better than Arlo. There are more customization options on the Wyze and the video delay is very small (delay on Arlo can be like 4 seconds).

Yeah - I was wondering about build cost + time in regard to how much $$ you really save building this setup yourself. While it can be more fun to build something, you open yourself up to potential hours of troubleshooting. I was beginning to wonder about the cost of this setup versus a complete Chinesium camera set + built-in DVR from Wish or AliExpress - but then he said "No Audio" and "No mobile interface", and that makes the Chinesium setups look like the better deal. Granted, you may still be stuck with several hours of troubleshooting due to poor documentation and the odd way the menus and symbiotic settings are set up in the cheap Chinese systems, but if it gives you the audio AND the ability to control and watch via your smart phones, it's a no-brainer. The storage on them is usually limited, but so long as you can connect to a NAS or even an external HDD, that limitation can be easily and cheaply overcome.
Having dealt with extracting evidence from security systems before, the audio can sometimes be crucial for identification purposes when you don't get a perfect face-on shot of the perp. In another scenario, if you are reviewing an incident between employees, video alone doesn't tell the whole story, and sometimes who actually said what can be the difference between who remains employed and who gets fired, and an audio recording of the incident cuts out the "he said/she said" element of any disagreement or argument between employees.

As someone who works in tech support in the headquarters building for a security camera manufacturer, Nest cameras can only do up to 1920x1080/2MP, stuff my company is phasing out because 2MP quality is so old... while we currently have up to 4K/8MP cameras (both IP cameras and TVI) that you can use local storage up to 40TB with with our DVRs/NVRs. The good thing about Nest and Ring is their easy to use, hassle-free software... can’t say the same for my companies software XD.

The plug and play can be easily done by just getting some cheaper IP cams instead of Rpi they used which is what you'd go for if you're not massively tech savvy. Or you can get an ESP32 and just flash stuff and done, or pay someone for that. Not only is that significantly cheaper. It's also superior and more customizable

I did almost exactly the same thing. Looked into Nest Cams, decided the price was ridiculous, then got a few PIs together to form a MotionEye OS system. One issue you might come against is a silly restriction on the sale of the Raspberry Pi Zero W. It's REALLY cheap because it's being sold with almost no profit margin, but thanks to that, the various places that you can buy them from will only allow you you buy one of them. EVER. I've got a couple because I bought them from different sites. Some places restrict it to just 1 per order, but there have been reports of people placing separate orders for them, and having them cancelled because of the "One Pi policy".

Roun Dair it’s because you watch popular and predictable youtube channels based on your watch habits. eventually, you’re going to see people with similar watch profiles to you like Justin Y.
just watch videos that have less than 100,000 views as well as to view the videos within 12 hours of release

I just did this in 2020. I ended up not using MotionEYE OS and instead just wrote a simple service that runs on startup on my Pi Zero W. Full 1080p 30fps footage with motion detection, motion zones, storage, and processing on my FreeNAS server using Zoneminder. Works fantastic.

Could you do a step-by-step tutorial sometime soon of exactly what you need for the parts, where to meet them, and how to do port forwarding and all of that jazz? I am pretty new to the channel and consider myself a starter to computers so I don't know how to do port forwarding and all of the stuff from the router settings. I have a Linksys Gigabit router, so it's different than tp-link. By the way really good video! I actually have a Raspi 3 b+ so maybe I could use that for a camera?

No IR illumination for night. I have made two pi cams in the past. I tried some generic IR panels. It helps but not tremendously. Any panels to recommend? Not bad in good light. Find a POE cable adapter on ebay. Run ethernet cable since you have to power it and get more reliable video over cat 5

Please don't be that guy. CZcams allows user to see how many viewers watch the video at a specific time. I'm pretty sure the sponsor will look up to that number. They only pay linus for the amount of viewers that watch the video at that specific time. Be nice, we love this channel anyway.

Yes, I do refer to linus that he able to get that number. And there will be high possibility the sponsor require that number in order to determine how much money they need to pay them to advertise their product in this video. I do agree that linus won't share anything unnecessary data with the client unless it is somewhat related to their contract.

I have 12 2K Amcrest POE dome cameras. About $55 US each. Ran to a POE switch. With the Amcrest NVR. Wasn't too pricey or hard to install. I've seen those $500 camera setups at costco. Also an option.

one of my biggest grimes with home security cameras, is the atrocious resolution and the advertised make believe resolution they claim.
we ended up getting one of the cheapest and nastiest knock offs due to this, and while the day time quality isn't great, but night quality is surprisingly excellent.
for lowering home insurance, it's worth every cent. and I can see who's approaching the house.
we got an 8 camera system for AU$ 300 and can cover pretty much every side of the house and yard. and most surprisingly, the software is pretty decent, has apps for android and ios, and the PC software allows it's own separate recording per PC. it's advertised in ALDI and dicksmith and jaycar so not hard to find.
be interesting to hook up a decent camera to test the hardware of the main box, but haa money..
