    My favorite cryptid is the Wendigoon.
    Sightings in rural Appalachia have described an enormous, hairy humanoid, usually seen brandishing firearms and Hawaiian shirts. It has been described making lists, summarizing books or movies, and engaging in conspiatorial discussion.

    Two interesting points on the thylacine, there was a breeding pair of thylacine that were on a ship bound for America and the ship crashed, it was carrying animals that were bound for zoos across the country, and most of the animals actually made it to shore so some people theorize that that breeding pair could have possibly even made it to shore, and that is what the rumors of the chupacabra stem from in America.... Second, before the thylacine was hunted to Extinction in Australia, and Tasmania its original habitat also extended to Papua New Guinea including several nearly impossible to reach mountain ranges, however natives from those regions when shown pictures of them say they've seenthylacine in recent years in some of these incredibly remote regions. I've seen Forrest galanteon his podcast talking about how he thinks that if any of them actually do still exist to this day that that's where they're going to find them in the almost impossible to reach areas and mountains of Papua New Guinea, basically a isolated population of these animals that have been living in this mountainous terrain and valley areas that are almost impossible for humans to get to...

    There is something oddly creepy to me about instances like the Lizard Man, the Dover Demon, or the Beast of Bray Road. These bizarre creatures with enough presence to trigger real police investigations, disturb an entire community, gain traction in headlines - just vanish. Like whenever you see a spider in your room only for it to disappear in a blink.
    It's still there, somewhere.
    It helps that they aren't nearly as widespread and fleshed out characters as, say, Bigfoot or Mothman. Lots and lots of unknowns still lingering around them.

The deer seemed disoriented. He kept trying to follow me. Even in the dim light I could see the patchyness of his fur and his eyes seemed glazed over. Getting within a dozen meters of wild deer is super common here. But this guy was a few feet from me. I ran across the street, and he kept following (almost being hit by a car) he was drooling as well. Sad thing to see. Also a very freaky thing to run into in an alleyway in the middle of the night.

    The Orang Pandek has been described less like a orangutan but more like "the little man of the forest" similar to the homo floresiensis (hobbit). The interesting thing about Orang Pandek is that its sightings predate even the discovery of the bones of homo floresiensis. And the Orang Pandek sightings are also in Indonesia, where the homo floresiensis was said to exist. Meaning that it is possible that homo floresiensis may not have gone extinct 50,000 years ago on the island of Flores but could still be alive today (or relatively recently) on the neighbouring Island of Sumatra. It is like the Yeti and Bigfoot but with an increased probability of existing. I say increased possibility than the yeti or bigfoot because we have an archaeological reference point in the same part of the world. To your point if we discovered that the homo floresiensis was still alive and living in the forest of Sumatra it would completely redefine what it means for us to be human.

    hard agree that the wendigo is one of the greatest, most terrifying cryptids out there. i always had a fascination with it, as well as skinwalkers. they both have that uncanny valley feel to them, but what i think makes the wendigo more chilling than the skinwalker, is the fact that it’s something that literally, used to be human. skinwalkers are scary because the idea of something non-human wanting to appear human is genuinely terrifying. but the idea of an actual human TURNING into something non-human because of their disgusting, animalistic behavior gives me the shivers. the thought of seeing a creature as terrifying as that, and knowing it used to look just like you truly keeps me awake at night. as a kid, i used to be scared of gollum from lotr, because i couldn’t comprehend how a person, with feelings and a soul, could turn into… that. so yeah, i totally understand you wendigoon.

      Skinwalkers are literal humans. It’s really frustrating seeing something from my culture get so twisted up by the outside world. Skinwalkers are people; greedy, selfish, evil people who hurt others to get their way. They don’t wear people’s skins, they don’t mimic people or voices. They are called skinwalkers because they use the skins of animals to fast travel and spy and do things in secret. They’re witches.

    • @daydreamdirty
      @daydreamdirty Před 5 měsíci +3

      Part of why they do- I suspect is because they can’t feel or choose not to. It’s speculated that they or some of them give up their humanity….. which likely ties in with why they emit and provoke a lot of fear, anxiety, etc.
      Also as a side note- I still think that no matter what they are, they’re still bound by certain laws set in place by the Creator…. And can be opposed by spiritual forces.
      Namely Angels if you want me to be specific

    • @brainrot5267
      @brainrot5267 Před 5 měsíci +9

      @@daydreamdirty are you replying to me about skinwalkers? If so, Navajos don’t believe in one almighty creator or angels. We have a pantheon of deities who are, although very powerful, not almighty nor rule over us. They assist us, they teach us their knowledge. Skinwalkers are like dark medicine men, using their natural born abilities and gifts for selfish and evil reasons. Obviously there are gonna be ways to oppose them, but you should never want to try and test that should you ever come across one. Just like how, sure you can go to the hospital if you break your arm while doing something stupid, but you shouldn’t have been doing something stupid in the first place.

    As someone of Native American heritage I greatly appreciate you emphasizing the difference between the original indigenous beliefs of the wendigo and the modern wendigo tales, because so many don't do this and it is INCREDIBLY frustrating to see ppl completely bastardize and butcher native beliefs and then try to present those modern retellings as the originals. This is most egregiously done with skinwalkers. Literally what everyone nowadays seems to think is a skinwalker is NOT a skinwalker whatsoever and is radically different from how they're described in native beliefs.

    • @logandarnell8946
      @logandarnell8946 Před 5 měsíci +21

      then your legends are different than the ones other people like, your culture is not more important than their culture. ever. being mad about people purposely misrepresenting your culture is fine, but being mad at having their own that is based on tales from untold generations ago and have changed since is completely pointless. your native American versions have likely changed over time as much as the pop culture versions have, that is just how information and culture disseminates. if you are getting pissed because you want sole rights to the name of a thing that exists in pop culture AND native American culture, then that's a massive you problem.

    • @itsasquid
      @itsasquid Před 5 měsíci +57

      Yeah it's really sad how much those legends were bastardized and appropriated in modern pop culture. I used the skinwalker for a cryptid based ttrpg campaign taking place during the gold rush and in my research I quickly learned how different they actually were. It's actually insane how much it's been mishandled.

    I’ve never heard of Owl Man until now, but I instantly got a little creeped out when Wendigoon described it. One night around 3:00 AM eastern time (I live in Michigan) I woke up to a super loud thud/bang right outside my window that I sleep next to. My first instinct was to pull back my curtain and look out in the front yard to see if someone was out there, but perched on the gutter right next to my window was a massive owl, I’m talking huge, this was by far the biggest owl I’ve ever seen and it was staring right at me through my window. I got spooked since that’s pretty rare at my house at least, but I just chalked it up to being a bigger than average Great Horned Owl. But now I have some doubts about what I saw 😂😳

There were so many times we'd smoke a blunt and Oscar would start hooting like crazy and making what sounded like mating calls. I have always had a fascination with the wendigo legend and I was so incredibly pleased when I found this channel simply because of the name at first (and then you got me absolutely hooked with the analog horror and literature theories/analysis). For me, the wendigo is a great representation of greed and the horrors of giving into it. I haven't yet seen a movie or a book that portrays this cryptid to the fullest horror that it can be, so I'm hoping I can bring this wonderful creature to justice since I'm attempting to do my own series with the wendigo as the main antagonist of sorts.
