When Cadmus walked the Earth, just a few generations separated him from his divine ancestors. From atop Mount Olympus, they scrutinized and meddled with mortals like himself. Cadmus was a skilled warrior and heir to the Phoenician throne, but he wouldn’t stay in the gods’ favor for long- a critical mistake would seal his tragic fate. Iseult Gillespie details the Greek myth of the serpent’s curse.

I love how every Greek myth in a modern context just makes the gods come across like complete psychopaths
It's an allegory for the harsh and unpredictable nature of ancient living. They did believe in these gods, but consistently debated the nature of everything around them.
That's not a good way to use the word but yea they are forces of nature, cruel or kind, lucky or unlucky on a coin toss
(by that I mean they are volatile like the forces of nature)
To be fair, gods in Greek mythology were also reflection on nature, fate, etc and give in those times where one unfortunate event can be the death of you, it was reflected by the mythology. For example Artemis was the goddess of hunting and likes, both the good and the bad of it. As sure she can protect you from the danger of wilderness, but she can also be danger herself.
Indeed. If Kratos was part of these myths he would gladly avenge humankind and the Olympians pay for their crimes.

And interesting to discover that the name of Europe is Phoenician meaning west or where the sun set
Her story is a another mess of shenanigans.
There is a version in which Europa arrives at the marriage of Cadmus and Harmonia as a guest, at least they were reunited here.

I’ve heard some of these myths separately but never knew it was all in a family. That’s amazing.
Yeah I heard Cadmus here and there and recognized from Dc Comics stuff but this is the first time im seeing the source that links them
Weirdly enough, I've read multiple mythology books including "Mythology" by Edith Hamilton and "The Library of Greek Mythology" by Apollodorus (I can't remember who translated it) and I still learned a couple of new myths from this video.

Funny thing is Ares didn't do anything bad in the story, he said something when his snake was killed and then that's it.
Knowing Aries I thought he would have actually been impressed and blessed him. meant as in "you will be a serpent" as in like you would lay low and strike in battle

@@arvayahrozier4402 I could just imagine Aries with a giant serpent and a modern day person walks up to him and demands that he put his snake on a leash. Then, Aries does something unexpected like apologizes and says he's new to the neighborhood.

The gods meddling in the lives of people causes so much chaos for the people they toy with. If you catch the attention of the gods, you might as well consider your life ruined.

how ironic: I was recently looking up Greek based names for an original character, and Cadmus was among the names that I was considering. his myth was interesting to learn about on my own research, and equally fascinating to learn about through Ted Ed's wonderful art style.

Something that I think is missed on us modern audiences about the ancient myths is the concept of Destiny that the Greeks had, which I can't properly articulate sadly
They were known for their tragedies, in which people have to face a choice that is both impossible and obvious, doomed to fall
I think I can: One always meets his destiny on the road he takes to avoid it.

Oh my god we literally just read the Bakkhai last semester
(Bakkhai deals with Dionysus absorbing Agave and Autonoë into his Bakkhic rites and tricking them into killing Pentheus - the child that the video mentioned - for his hubris against him. Cadmus was like the One good guy in the story aside from Tiresias. Involved a bit too much wine, blood, and ... bulls for a classroom setting.)

Lol I'm pretty sure he just forgot about it. Founding a city took priority over saving his sister I guess ha
Edit: His father told them not to come back without his sister - they were essentially exiled. So after searching they gave up and did what the oracles told them.
If I remember correctly, the Oracle pretty much told Cadmus to forget about Europa, he'd never find her, hence the building a city - he couldn't go back to his realm without her, so he might as well start a new life.
Fun fact: Europa was a Phoenician princess, so Zeus carried her over to an 'unknown continent' to hide her. That continent was named Europe in her honour.

Zeus kidnapped Europa and took her to Greece, more specifically the island of Crete. There Zeus transforms back and, according to many versions, grapes Europa, together they have three sons named Minos, Sarpedon and Rhadamanthys. She also married the king of Crete. Europas son Minos later also becomes king of Crete and marries Pasiphae, the daughter of the titan sun god Helios, and together they also have many children, including a dauhter named Ariadne who later marries the olympian wine god Dionysus and in some versions even gets immortalised and becomes a fertility goddess herself.

Jeez, these gods were the worst. I mean, Cadmus and friends did as the Oracle said, this never mentions if he even got Europa back, and yeah, this was all started by Zeus, who was never held accountable for his actions...
Europa ended up on the island of Crete, where she had some kids with Zeus, and no one back home ever saw her again. Fun fact: Because no one knew where Europa disappeared to, her name came to mean “those places we don’t know much about.” The Greeks started to call the lands north of them Europa, or Europe.

To be honest ' naga shapam' is deeply rooted in Hinduism as well . There are prayers and poojas (rituals ) offered in the name of naga ( snake ) to relieve people affected by the curses to this day .
This video's voice reminds me of The Narrator of Slay The Princess, or just my personal definition of a "narrator voice", I love it.

I love Greek myths but it feels like every five videos has a Greek one. I can only listen to the Greek gods being crazy so much. Would love to see more cultures covered. Indian, Australian Aboriginal, Slavic, First Nations, Central African, Mesopotamian, Welsh…the list is endless.

There’s more too! Hephaestus hated Harmonia for being Ares and Aphrodite’s daughter, so he gave her a magic necklace that cursed her with misfortune, which was why her family met such terrible ends.

I think it was good that Ares closed the doors of Greek mythology by waging a war against gods (although for its hared for humans) so that Greek gods can finally not f##k with humans

"Besieged by bad luck" bad luck implies some element of randomness... everything bad that happened was Zeus and Hera's fault (Mostly Zeus's but the ability for any of the gods to punish him is limited at best) also a bit of Artemis but the whole "walk in on my bathing pool get turned into a deer" seems like a perfectly reasonable response.
Ares didn't do anything except get mad about his snake dying... Side note Ares gets snubbed in basically every myth he's in: trapped in a jar for months, getting stabbed by Diomedes in the siege of Troy (and then mocked for it by Zeus), and his pet snake getting killed.

Wait a minute, is this why one of jupiter's moons its called Europa?
Yup. Jupiters moons are all named after his assorted affairs (or products of those affairs)
And NASA sent a probe called Juno (a Romanized version of Hera) to explore Jupiter. There were some memes about it years ago which accused NASA of sending Juno to spy on Zeus.

You guys wanna know so thing? Europa the sister later gave birth to three sons on Crete (where she became queen). And one of them was future king Minos. And when he pissed of posideon, the god cursed his wife to fall in love with the bull that king Minos was supposed to sacarfuce to posideon. And so for the wife to do the thing with the bull, she asked Daedalus (Also known as the guy that flew with Icarus who ended up flying too high the wings melted and he died) to craft her a bull she can go into to ….do the thing… anyways she gave b8th to the Minotaur. And we all know how that story goes- (Fun fact: Dionysus married Ariadne the daughter of king Minos, and they are actually both 2nd cousins I’m pretty sure. Hey not as bad for Greek mythology)
