    This is so much more helpful than reading forums.... Every time someone asks a question on this topic, you always get someone commenting saying, "the low fundamental on a bass guitar is at 40hz, so that's where I high pass it", and I have just always felt like that was wrong. This further confirms it. You've gotta cut stuff and as long as it sounds good, it is good. Thanks for the video.

    Dude you are one of the few guys out there who always reminds us you do not need crazy expensive or elaborate gear to make a good mix. I went on a tangent a while back with plug ins etc and I realized that you can only polish a turd so much. And using your ears and basic understanding does everything you need. Thank you for your time! Good stuff.

    Another awesome and very simple video. Thank you. I was struggling with a mix and toying with changing the low end eq between bass and kick and watched your video. Literally followed your advice to a tee and now it sounds wayyyyyyy better. The bass is cutting through with clarity. So simple. Thanks again.

    Great one Bobby. I still have much to learn but I've been playing with bass/kick balance for a while. I like music punchy so after trying many things I settled on an Eq setting very close to yours. I hi pass my bass at 60hz but I'll give 70 a try and see how it sounds. Cheers!

    I used to keep low freqs on kick, and cut on the bass under 80hz, but searching for a boost where the meat of the bass is. Further, I try to mix bass level in order to glue it with the kick : it gives punch and impact

    I had an issue where kick and snare were causing issues with a compressor. I looked at a graph with a clipper and the kick/snare were twice the height of the rest of the graph. Luckily it wasn't a serious song, but does this sound familiar at all? Didn't really happen with other recordings.
    Any thoughts?
    Anyways great vid. I remember being told to cut everything below 50hz, but maybe I should change things.

    I think both eq styles work well. But I honestly prefer the bass below kick approach. Perhaps because so many recordings use kick samples or virtual drums and I feel making that such a big part of the mix makes everyone sound generic. Was listening to korn life is peachy album today. Great example of how the bass can handle the deep lows in my opinion. Listening to that album today was very refreshing after hearing so much music the last few years where the kick is under the bass and being burned out on that sound.

    Is that an old CRT TV in the background???? Have a Fender 75 I got in the early/mid 90s. It’s TOTALLY OG. I think the speaker is 18” 🤔 Can’t remember, but it’s WAY bigger than a normal 12”. The magnet is SO fn strong it would pull the rays from the CRT tubes!!!! FROM ACROSS THE ROOM!!! 🤣
    Most people can’t hear below 50hz… ??? Plus all of the CRAP speakers Bluetooth speakers people user can’t produce 50-60hz. So it’s totally lost. How do you calculate for that? Even saw a (i believe) iZotope lesson, from them, that even talked about that. Curios your thoughts.
    Thanks for the videos brother!!!!!

    One thing that comes to mind, Bobby: are you talking about mixing real drums? Cause I use SD3 and I'm pretty sure that I don't need to EQ my kick, for example, in the same way that if I was given a raw real kick drum.

    • @FrightboxRecording
      @FrightboxRecording  Před rokem +2

      I'm primarily talking about Hi-pass filter settings in this video, so this is applicable to both live drums and midi drums. When it comes to bigger boosts and cuts, that's a different story.

    Cheers.

    • @theinfant
      @theinfant Před rokem +2

      Typically you'd find the fundamental pitch on each different tom and highpass just below that
      You want the note of the tom to still ring out but you don't need all the sub noise below that haha

    • @hardydrachmann8038
      @hardydrachmann8038 Před rokem

      @@theinfant Thanks for the response. My question was in relation to Bobby saying nothing except the kick and bass lives below the 70hz region. I often find the toms to be filtered around the 55hz region - so was interested in hearing his take on this.
      Btw. I usually group all Toms on a bus then filter at 55hz if that makes sense 👍
      Thanks for the answer though, those are also a good way to mix by 🙂🙂

    hey Bobby, I`d like a question. It might be ridiculous but when I record doubletrack guitars sloppy, they sound massive, and when I edit them so they`re aligned, they instantly become thin and narrow. Is it a common case or am I imagining things? Any advice here?

    Besides dealing with hi hats on real drums, probably this is the worst thing to work on a mix. I hate hi hats so much. You know, once I started to use the distorted bass in the mids I manage to get the kick to cut in the mix a little better. I also leave the kick in the 30 hz and the bass around 45 hz.
