There's a cat Cafe in my town and they do it exactly as you should. The cats are all fostered and the cafe is meant to have people interact with the cats, and if they like the cat, they can start the adoption process! If a cat is uncomfortable after a week or so they return it to the shelter. So if there's a cat that particularly dislikes being around other cats or too many people, it doesn't have to. It's a lovely place that I honestly feel good about supporting

Japan has a huge problem with the trafficking of exotic animals for cafes and the pet trade. Most of the animals are either taken from the wild or come from terrible breeders who pump out large numbers of exotic animals, not unlike puppy mills. Domestic animals in cafes can be ok if done right, but exotic animal cafes are always unethical and should be avoided.

    • @Firestar-TV
      @Firestar-TV Před 10 měsíci +8

I think it can be done right depending on the Species, but the Problem is that many don't seem to really want to go through the necessary Effort to do so.
The Animals definitely need to come from a good Breeder though.
Luckily a Cafe with bad Animal Care most likely couldn't exist for long where I live.
I guess a Fox Cafe or a Butterfly Cafe might work fine if it's done right. Maybe even Stuff like a Deer or Goat Cafe if it is inside a proper Stable with a fenced off Guest Area and Rules on how to interact with the Animals

Yeah, I think you could do a snake (or reptile) cafe.
Appropriately sized enclosures with appropriate care and very showy animals that don't mind being stared at with information about the species and snakes in general. Educational and fun, I would probably run it if I didn't need to make a profit because I love snakes and coffee. Like imagine drinking coffee with a brazilian rainbow boa chilling in a huge zoo grade enclosure next to you while you can read facts about the species. I already have a snake and can drink coffee with him, so I don't need a snake cafe xD All I need is a zoo grade enclosure and a brazilian rainbow boa

@@idiotically-everything 🙃 in a Ball Python Cafe the Snakes could probably even be free roaming (probably not the whole Day though) because Ball Pythons seem to be the least aggressive Snakes that exist. Even wild ones can be picked up without becoming aggressive. Some Owners even let their large Snakes free roam from Time to Time. I think though for a Place like that to exist, there would definitely need to be Rules regarding Interactions with Animals. Or Snakes could only free roam during special Events 🤔

i'm a bird lover and the owl café to me was the most disturbing one by far, the way the owls were chained up and couldn't fly around, the small room, the bright lights and how the flyer had the audacity to advertise the owls as "free range" when they chain them up in a small apartment taking away their ability to fly, which mind you, is absolutely a bird's most defining qualities. glad they've closed down and hopefully the owls are now in either in a sanctuary that takes good care of them or back in the wild.

I remember going to a reptile cafe years ago and I will say it did seem really good. The reptiles there didn’t seem stressed, all had the right housing (their boa in particular basically had a room to itself for example with plenty of enrichment) and the animals where given long breaks and rotated around to avoid them getting stressed by it all. The walls and tables all had little enrichment options so if you are given a reptile they can entertain themselves a bit while you are chilling, everything had protective layers and the entire cafe was heated to their needs, not yours. There’s a fair few rules too as expected so it’s pretty fair to say they care for their animals.
I remember having a decent time there, being handed a milk snake that just happily explored on and around me as I had a drink. As someone with snakes myself I could tell that it wasn’t really stressed at all and just had a decent time wandering. The other reptiles they had where bearded dragons, blue tongues, rankins dragons, corn snakes, a boa and a few others I couldn’t really see, so a lot of reptiles that are much more on the chill side.
All in all, that one I’d recommend, and I do think animal cafes with something weird like reptiles can work but it does break my heart that bad ones exist,.

I also fell for the owl cafe - a different one but in Tokyo (there are a lot unfortunately). Went at night as well, hoping that was best for the owls but there was bright lights everywhere. They had a separate incredibly small room for the owls and at least at this one there was only 6 owls in total you could meet. You schedule an appointment and they talk to you about the owl and you get to actually hold them (now being a volunteer at a wildlife rehab, I realized is horrifying to do). They were chained and pulled off the chain when held. Here is the worst part - there where two great horned owls, two barn owls, and two different pygmy species. They literally had two owls that are prey to four of them all crammed in a tiny room. A barn owl missed it's perch and fly over to the two pygmy owls and scared them half to death. It was horrible and I can't believe I gave them money. 😭

I think, much like cat cafes, there are some exotic animal cafes that handle things better than others. I actually went to a different owl cafe in Japan (it was a local one to my jurisdiction and definitely more of a hole in the wall place) and all of the critters there were rescues that couldn’t be reintroduced to the wild for one reason or another - they worked in tandem with a wildlife center nearby. You had your tea and snacks in a separate room to avoid the owls eating anything they shouldn’t. Then after having your snacks you went to hang out with the owls. You were specifically instructed on how to handle them and which ones are human friendly at the moment vs which ones to leave alone because they were showing signs of being tired or annoyed (those ones just hung out and vibed). They all had free access to the area and you just got to chill with the owls for an hour (you paid for the hour and only a certain number of people was allowed in at a time). I had a chill barn owl hang out on my shoulder for a bit and it was a good time.
Basically, I think there are ways it can be done right, but it definitely needs to be done in tandem with a wildlife reserve or rescue and put the wellness of the animal at the forefront.

No proper places with natural branches to sit on (so their claws won't shorten naturally and their weight won't be distributed properly), different owl species housed together which is just dangerous, because they'll kill each other, no flight so say hi to Aspergillosis.
Also, no healthy owl acts chill around people. Chill = sick, so every owl cafe is literally a death factory.

The worst wild animal experience I've ever had also happened to be in Japan, specifically at a place called Okinawa World. I went there not knowing there even would be any animals, I was aiming at seeing a cave and some folk stuff - that's how the place was being advertised after all. But when I got there, I saw that one of the attractions was "showing endemic snakes" in a specific building. I thought that would be interesting and went in there, however it turned out to be more like some sort of a circus - there was a lady that had a snake in front of her on a stage, she was constantly saying that the snake is dangerous (I understand Japanese) comparing the snake to some kind of monster which just made it look bad and then suddenly she HIT the snake in the head! For no reason! Of course the snake got upset and the kids were screaming. I was speechless and quickly left.
And when I left, I saw that down the corridor there was a "children's" corner - in the middle of that corner there was a plastic box full of little lizards and there were children ages around 5-7 sitting around the box just freely grabbing those LIVING lizards and throwing them wherever! And next to them there was a sort of a cat tower with two snakes that looked like pythons on it and they had their mouths tied with a rope! There was no separation between the reptiles and the children, they were grabbing them as they pleased and the facility worker was just standing there and looking.
So I stormed out the place and the worst site was yet to come - there was an outdoor area with yet other types of animals, ie. gigantic tortoises, crapmed in tiny places, no plants around them, no way to move, they looked so malnourished, their legs were all twisted, claws overgrown, no water around, that's where I actually started crying seeing how cruel it all was and left the entire Okinawa World. This has left me speechless to this day. I can't believe it was a real place and it was allowed. In a country that everybody considers "advanced" and some people even believe Japanese people "love the nature". No, they don't, they try to forcefully turn it into entertainment by making those cafes, circuses and what not 😢

Most of the cat cafes here on Oahu are partnered with the Hawaiian Humane Society! So all of the cats you interact with are actually adoptable, and they usually have a range of ages from kittens to oldies, so the experience is kind of customizable on who you want to interact with. It’s been a great project to get more cats into good homes instead of euthanized, which has been at a high rate since there are just SO many feral cats around the island (and they’re like the top invasive species to the already devastated native wildlife) so the shelter is always full and unfortunately having to make space on their own :/
Animal cafes like that I think are awesome, and they’re slowly sprouting up more here. But using non-domesticated animals or even solitary/mixed animals seems sketch AT BEST. I agree with you that they should be in sanctuaries or elsewhere.

hey soda, i have volunteered at a bird of prey display team in the uk for over a year and ive done research on falconry and bird of prey keeping and husbandry for a lot longer, i have also done a year course on managing animals in captivity :) so i would consider to have some knowledge that would be helpful to speak on the subject of the owl cafe you encountered.
what you described as the owls being 'chained up' is a process called tethering, this is a practice that has been done for thousands of years in falconry, which traditionally uses falcons and hawks (accipiters) as well as eagles in some areas. HOWEVER not all tethering is good tethering, as seen with the northern white faced owl at 7:21. the clip on that branch that is used is not falconry standard and where it is pressed up against that branch like that it doesnt have full range to swivel and could lead to tangles. tangles can be life threatening for a bird and with a proper quality system they very rarely to never occur. that red water dish is also abhorrent, water bowls should be big enough for the bird to bath in comfortably even if they never do they should always be given the option. that perch seen in the shot is also horrible. smooth surfaces like that can cause bumblefoot if they have no other option for perching, birds of prey need differing points in pressure on their feet, so wrapping the perch in spiky astroturf is actually a lot better. that owl could also go under the perch and then hop over, tangling the leash and when they try to hop to other area, they could become suspended, cause injury, and/or break feathers.
if these owls are tethered permanently, that is simply unacceptable. owls, unlike other birds of prey, have smaller brains because of how massive their eyes are (fun fact: their eyes are actually tube shaped, not spherical, meaning they cannot move them in their sockets!) and how large their hearing organs are, their brains have shrunk to deal with the deficit of space in their skulls. this means that owls dont understand tethering like other birds of prey and can continue to bate and bate, not understanding that they wont go anywhere (bate means to jump off the perch or glove and flap.) owls, at night, should be free lofted. free lofted means that they have a space where they can move around freely. if they have sixty owls as you said the leaflet you were given suggested, they would need a LOT of space for each and every owl. because these birds are interacting with humans, these owls are imprints, meaning that they were raised by humans as a chick (other birds of prey dont need to be imprints to interact and work with humans comfortably, owls, however, do. this comes down to the smaller brain thing again) and this means that they cannot be kept together (not that you should intermix owl species, they will just kill each other) even with a member of their own species that is the opposite sex because they dont recognise their own species as their own, so they would ALL need separate mews (rooms for birds of prey.) i highly highly doubt they are providing this and im glad that they have closed, i hope that the owls all ended up somewhere that they are actually cared for correctly.
not all owls are nocturnal either, that is a misconception, some are crepuscular and some are diurnal too (examples in this video are the snowy owl which are diurnal). from what i have gathered, having nocturnal owls awake during the day doesnt cause them any harm, if thats apart of their routine and as long as they have time to actually rest. another misconception is that birds of prey fly all the time, they dont, they only fly to hunt, find a mate, or avoid danger. flying for any other reason is a waste of energy and, in the wild, wasting energy can kill you quickly. the reason why the owls werent moving much is probably because theyd been fed. also you shouldnt really stroke owls, it is alien to them and the oils on your hands can damage their feathers. there are ways you can do it to help them though for example if they have irritating pin feathers, then in that case it is a benefit.
i hope this cleared up some things, feel free to ask for any questions that you might have :)) i will probably do some edits later adding a bit more information but ive gotta be somewhere in a mo so ive gotta leave you here.

There was a local cat cafe that unfortunately shut down that did adoptions. It was a boba place and it was somewhat popular, especially for college students(as this is a college town). The reason for the shut down was that the owners owned the majority(or at least quite a few) of the cats that resided there and apparently it was super common for one of thier owned cats to get ill- and said illness easily spread to the few cats that were up for adoption through shared litter boxes.

I actually work at a cat cafe in North Western Pennsylvania (the US), and as long as the cats are from shelters, the amount of space is adequate for the amount of cats they have, and they follow FDA guidelines, I see absolutely no problem with cat cafés. We've been open for a little over a year, and we've had 15/16 adoptions so far! Cat cafes also give opportunities for folks like a few of our regulars who rent and can't have cats. There's one girl and her mom who specifically come in to see the cats bc of that.
Wild animal cafes or "designer" pet cafes (like the one that someone in the comments said has a bunch of bengal cats), however, I have a big problem with. Its hard enough for the 4 of us to keep tabs on all 8 of our strays and make sure they're healthy bc of communal litterboxes and such, plus we have to give the de-wormer, flea treatments, and other meds from time to time, so I can only imagine how difficult if is to keep tabs on all the different animals and make sure they aren't stressed. Not to mention that *domestic* cats are meant to be inside. Most of those wild animals shouldn't be. It would be one thing if its like an aviary where the birds are being rehabilitated, but even then, seeing all the ppl come and go has to be SUPER stressful.
Also, about the bengal cat cafe specifically. My family has had two bengals that were rescues, one from a shitty neighbor and the other from a lady a few states away. Bengals are VERY uptight about EVERYTHING. They want their litter boxes spotless, they want specific food and wont eat is you don't slowly weign them, they're LOUD, they're emotional, they're stubborn. They're like, the hardest domestic cats to deal with bc theyre just plain picky. I cant begin to fathom how stressful running a cafe full of them must be 😬

They catch baby sea turtles from the ocean, and then people pay money (I think they pay money, I might be wrong!) to release the turtles back into the ocean, where they are caught and sold again. The video had over one hundred million views and ten million likes, so it seems that a lot of people don’t know the truth.

I think cat cafés are a brilliant idea to get cats socialised, adopted and give elderly cats a place to stay. Also, great for people, who love cats but can't keep them. But there need to be very harsh rules (especially for kids).
Other animals that could work are insects, reptiles or aquarium fish.
Things take a nosedive the most shy and sensitive the animals are and the more complicated their care is.

Here in Brazil it's a crime to own some exotic animals, especially if it's belongs to our own fauna, which includes capybaras. And I'm totally ok with that legislation! That's the right thing to do.
But, and then, I see our animals being freely adopted and taken to be exposed (in places that aren't zoos or sanctuaries) by people outside Brazil and I feel kinda frustrated with that. 🙃

I think a good owl cafe would have an outdoor fenced enclosure with lots of space, and there would be a glass barrier between the enclosure and the cafe. It would be more like a zoo, where people can simply observe them. However, the owls may be brought out into the cafe if they are tame and sitting on the worker’s shoulder, but only in the late evening. The cafe itself would be big enough for the owls to free-fly if safety precautions are taken. There should be perches for them to rest on and little hides if they do not want to interact with people. The tables should have umbrellas to prevent droppings from falling on them, and there should be plenty of rules in place.

the main cat cafe in my area is run by the local shelter network, so all the kitties are the sociable ones that like people and are all up for adoption.
the shelter network is really great too, they're minimal kill, do all required vaccinations, spay/neuter, and microchip animals before adopting them out. they also partner with the human society for raids of hoarding and puppymill situations, as well as TNR groups that work on feral cats.
i got my baby girl, dasha, from them and all i had to do when we got home was wash the flea/tick treatment off of her and she was good for vet stuff until her annual vaccinations.

Cat cafes are the ones I've seen done properly the most and I mean it does make sense since Cats are social animals. I think Guinea Pig Cafes and Rat cafes could probably done as well if done correctly as they are also social animals. Probably any social domesticated animal that can be free-roaming could be in a cafe setting if given proper care, space, and enrichment. But yeah, it's clear that a lot of those wild animal cafes seem to be more set up as "ooo look, animals that you don't normally get to interact with, look at them be like pets". It's definitely meant to be more of an attention grabber and being 'unique' rather than being beneficial for the animals themselves :T

  • @TodosLod
    @TodosLod Před 10 měsíci +3

A cat café from my country (Argentina) has the same experience. All cats are rescues and up for adoption, and there was a pet shop where the money gained went to the shelter the cats came from. You had to make a reservation during morning or afternoon, because cats would sleep during noon. It was obvious how much they cared for the cats- there was always a coordinator around enforcing the rules (which had rules like no yelling or not waking up the cats- which I think are somewhat unheard of in animal cafés?) or just watching over making sure everything was alright.
They provided toys and wet food to interact with the cats, and it was all a relaxed situation and it was obvious the animals were taken care of. They'd even tell you to leave the cat alone if the cat wanted to lay around but not interact with anybody, which I thought was neat instead of the cats being forced either to interact or being taken away from their napping spot.
Those wild animal cafés don't show even an ounce of the same care for the animals I experienced in that place. It's very upsetting.

I've been to a few (well researched) cat cafes in different countries, and I can say they've all shown proper care and welfare. All (minus on in japan that was not my pick!) acted as temporary homes for socialised shelter cats, which is how it should be done. I don't think any wild/exotic animal cafes can be done right. Its a flawed concept to begin with, given that these are not domesticated animals meant to be around humans and often need far more space and care than they are given. They're simply not made to be around us in this capacity. I feel especially bad for prey animals as I can't imagine how scary it must be to spend the majority of your day surrounded by noise, eyes, and grabbing hands.

The monkeys were allowed in whenever they wanted to. They had a big house-like thing nearby so you could watch the monkeys because there was food in there. (To lure them away directly away from the visitors to avoid harm) It was a pretty nice experience and the monkeys weren’t trapped in any way because they were native to the little section of jungle. I agree that cat cafes can be done right, unfortunately I have been to a cat café here in Manchester (England) that I was not a fan of at all. It was way too busy, incredibly loud, there was young children running around, chasing after and harassing cats etc. It was a bad enough environment for me (I am autistic), so I can imagine how stressful it must have been for the cats. I honestly do think cat cafes can be done right, especially when they are helping facilitate the adoption of rescued cats, however there needs to be standards in place e.g., limited number of people, limited number of cats, perhaps even an age restriction, like no children under 12 or something.
I agree that owl café is not appropriate at all. I honestly am not a fan of people keeping birds of prey inside like pets, this seems to be becoming a bit of a trend especially with owls because they are "cute". But in my opinion birds of prey should be kept outside in a large enclosure, in as natural of an environment as possible. So it naturally follows that I don't agree with owls being kept in a café environment at all. Here's a couple other notes I wanted to make:
    1. Large owls such as eagle-owls are predators to smaller owl species. It is so stressful for them to be forced together constantly like that.
    2. As you mentioned, some species (not all!) of owl are nocturnal. This includes barn owls, and they should not be forced to be out during the day for such long periods of time.
    3. Owls are not particularly social birds, at most they will stay in pairs so it is stressful for them to be forced together like this. 60 birds in the same room is ridiculous and beyond inappropriate.
    4. Birds should not be tethered for hours at a time. I feel like its obvious why this is bad for psychological reasons, however it can also lead to them developing conditions such as bumblefoot.
    5. Owls are wild animals that are usually, at best, tolerant of human presence. They are not domestic animals and they don't tend to enjoy being pet.

It's sad and gross to chain raptors up (or any animal, for that matter) and force nocturnal animals to be awake and under bright lights for human enjoyment. Not to mention the horrific "care" and little to no enrichment at these less than savory cafés. Anyone who goes to these cafés and sees nothing wrong with them are not animal lovers. Do I want to pet an otter? Yes. But I know it's wrong to keep them in the setting, and that in general, I shouldn't touch an otter because they're wild animals.

Honestly if you want to be surrounded by animals who are taken care of and loved and have habitats befitting them but also you want to eat there’s this wild new thing called…a ZOO or THEME PARK. Quite a lot of these places let you feed the animals some might even let you touch one depending on what animal it is. If you want a slightly less expensive option go on a nature trail or park. Odds are you will see some type of animal. There is where I live a Seabird Sanctuary which is completely free, there are flyers and guides there to tell you all about the birds, they all have proper habitats and are well taken care of and almost all of them are rescued from the beach or surrounding area. There are some that are flying about freely or walking around so I wouldn’t advise eating there, the seagulls will steal your cheese crackers lol they also do have owls because believe it or not there are owls near the ocean. So yeah if you want to see the majestic owls up close and you happen to be in Florida, drop by. Other than that I implore people to stop doing wild animal cafes, the only cafe that works is reptile or cat, most animals even domestic ones need lots and lots and lots of space and care!

case by case and species by species. i think cat and dog cafes are very nessacary partners to shelters. most other animals have good reason why its not well built to tolerate handling by more then one person or 3.
(im also pretty against all aquariums, thats just human ego / god complex nonsense)

If they had a sufficiently big area with natural habitat for the animals connected to the café so the animals could choose whether they wanted to interact I'd happily go to such a café. But forcing the animals to interact is just wrong.

No animal should be forced into a cramp unnatural environment. Especially since they're wild and need a lot of space

Cat cafes and bunny cafes etc are specifically so awesome because they help the animals find homes, enable people who cant have pets to get some animal therapy, drive business for the cafe, and help shelters with overcrowding! If its a wild animal that shouldn’t be a pet, then its cruel.

The cafes with domestic animals for adoption (and with very good and solid adoption process) it's possibly the ONLY way I can find kind of acceptable a place like that. The rest of the cafes that exist (including the ones with dogs or cats) are just unethical. We center ourselves all the time, our pleasure, our demands, so animals just exist for our entertainment. A lot of people, for example, it's not even interested in having wild animals as pets for the purpose of conservation or to help them in any way, many want to keep them just bc pretty or exotic or "weird" and "I need to have it", that's it. It's infuriating.
If you go to drink a coffee or to eat something WHY is that important to have animals to entertain you?, WHY you have to use them as a "tool" to lift up your mood?, WHY we believe we have the right to use them in the first place? Recently, I saw this format of yoga with puppies, like for WHAT and WHY 😐
I hope more strict policies, restrictions and penalties are adopted in many countries over time.

My main thoughts / issue with cat cafes is the risk to the cats welfare... We have three cats at home, all rescues, who don’t really get along, and it’s a lot of work creating a space where they can feel comfortable and be their naturally solitary selves. They are lovely and cuddly with us, but will hiss at and fight with one another if trapped together or left alone for too long. Only one can happily be picked up, the others will go crazy if you try to restrain them in any way, there’s just too much unknown past trauma. One girl will also toilet in the house sometimes if she gets too stressed out. We love them all but it takes a lot of time, patience and feliway diffusers to keep them all happy.
I could not imagine having any more cats to add to the mix so I have no idea how these cafes can happily have that many cats living together, especially when they claim the cats are rescued. Being picked up and chased and petted by strangers and random children everyday must be exhausting and stressful too. Sure, they normally have lots of hides and wall / ceiling climbers to explore and stay entertained, but I still find it hard to imagine that is actually an okay environment for their health and welfare... 🤷‍♀️
But wild animals cafes are a huge nope from me. Keep animals wild ffs!! 😡

The owl cafes should ideally have good and quiet/enriching conditions for their owls while they should ideally get all of their owls from rescue shelters or have had rescued those owls themselves. They should also be a place where owls that cannot survive in the wild because of permanent disabilities/life altering debilitating injuries can be cared for.

Those owl cafes are still not good. They are extremely solitary and should not be pet at all, or even held without proper protection. They get extremely overstimulated, and go into a state of learned helplessness.
