  • Welcome to Macintosh Librarian Labs! - a departure from the main Macintosh Librarian videos where Ms. Fox gets to blab about projects she is working on.
    Today, she is replacing the i5-7500 in her 27" 2017 iMac with an i7-7700K and she upgrades the hard drives too!Watch as she experiences her first time opening a sealed glass iMac.
    Don't worry, Maccy and Ms Fox will be back with a full-featured Macintosh Librarian episode soon! This is not a format change. 🤓

    I used to have a 2010 iMac 27" and I replaced the optical drive with an SSD. It gave it several more years of use. Even that was a hassle due to having to remove the screen in a similar way you did. My install actually messed up the camera a bit but I didn't use it so it didn't matter. In these remote working days it would have been a bigger problem! Nicely done and good info for others.

  • @UpLateGeek
    @UpLateGeek Před 3 lety +1

    Nice upgrade! There's definitely no harm in being overly paranoid about keeping your screws in order, definitely helps with reassembly. Back in the day I managed to get a free screen and rear shell for my somewhat dented 2005 Powerbook G4 from the Apple service centre by calling them up from my work and "suggesting" that we were certified Apple technicians. Didn't take long to pull it apart, but reassembling it took many hours, since I had to measure each and every screw! And even then I had some left over! Needless to say I won't be doing that again any time soon, so apparently you're a lot braver than me.
    Coincidentally, my PC is also an i7-7700K. Definitely still good enough for most tasks, although I only occasionally use mine for gaming these days.

    • @MacintoshLibrarian
      @MacintoshLibrarian  Před 3 lety

    I know this video is two years old, but I just discovered your channel. Hopefully you’ll see this comment.
    I own the identical 2017 27” iMac with the same processor you have. I guess it’s not entirely identical, because I don’t have 64gb of RAM, but otherwise, it’s the same iMac.
    I have been building computers since the early 1990s, and have considered upgrading to an NVME drive, upgrading the memory, and upgrading the processor.
    Even though I’ve been building PC’s since the early 1990s, the idea of opening up the iMac has been too intimidating to me.
    For the record, you are a lot braver than me! 😊
    Anyway, I am impressed with your results. At this point in time, it makes more sense for me to get a new Apple silicon based Macthan upgrade the 2017 as a daily driver ; but once I do that this would be a fun project to do on the side.
    As an aside, I can’t say how disappointed they no longer make the 27”iMac anymore. Yes I know you can get the Mac Studio and the separate monitor, but that’s way more money than I want to spend.
    I know I can cut corners getting a non Apple monitor, but I’d prefer staying in the Apple ecosystem. I do music production, and I need the larger pixel count to see the fine details in a very information packed screen. 4k would pass, but I’d have a much more comfortable experience with more resolution.
    Anyway, the 27” iMac is no longer an option. (sigh)
    Anyway, thanks for the video. It was motivating! I’ve subscribed to your channel as I am a retro nerd.
