Rough game to be a Leaf. Timmy got crushed. McCabe and Benoit got tagged in the nose, McMann injured, Matthews and Nylander almost kill each other, Marner superman jumped into the bench, Sammy got flattened, and Bertuzzi got hit in the coconuts by a shot. That list was longer than I realized. Drive home safe boys, you might get struck by lightning.

Every team knows the plot line in the playoffs. Beat the living snot out of the Leafs, injure some of them along the way. Kill of the penalties as Leafs power play disappears in the playoffs. Winning formula.

Steve, I hate to tell you this, but when the Wings took a three goal lead I literally told my parents that the Leafs would make up the difference, but as long as we made it to overtime we’d win because from watching your videos, I’ve learned that the Leafs love to come back from a three goal deficit and then lose in OT

Ok I just got 1 thing to say. What does Auston want? It's his body. If he wants to get 70 and the leafs don't let him I'll be pissed but if the leafs wants him to his 70 and he wants to sit on the bench for 2 games I'd be happy since it's his choice to sit out and rest. It should be his call for the last 2 games
I'd bet if it's actually his choice he would play both games but coach Keefe is not a fool and will probably sit him cause this whole 70 goals chase has been a big distraction for the rest of the team to be honest I'd rather see willy break 100 points for the first time in his career and so should AM 34 ...
As a wings fan who may contest the severity of the board, I will say that the referees didn't even call two minutes on a high stick play that broke a player's cheek bone just a few days ago. However you feel about this one specifically, the refs seem to be starting the "let 'em play" playoff hockey style of officiating a few games early on all fronts.
Refs are a mystery. Inconsistent for all teams. I don’t understand wtf they are doing sometimes. These little stick tap penalties lol????? Just call the actual penalties.
Not to mention the trip on Raymond that lead directly to a Pens goal the following game. Refs should call the game as it is, i find it so frustrating when they try to "even things up". They influence the outcomes of games instead of doing their jobs. Great win tonight tho! LGRW 🐙 🏒 🤘

Tell you a secret: goalies need rest. Imagine playing concentrated for 60mins, two times a week as a starter. Skaters play 20mins and only few of their mistakes lead to actual goals. against. You rest Sammy till game1 and he'll be sharp again. Also if you give up chances as a defense like they did vs Detroit you won't win any playoff series anyway, no matter who's in goal. Worst case Sammy's out, Woll in, I'm not concerned there either. I believe in both of them. Heck even Jones played almost fantastic. Nah we're good. Sammy shook of worse games this season. Wasn't his fault anyway those last two games.

Mathew’s has a better chance of scoring 70 than the leafs do of winning the cup so you need to have something to hang your hat on in the offseason.
You play him to get 70 goals because there is no chance to even win a round let alone a cup with this defensive crew and goaltending.
When the Leafs go out in the first round AGAIN, there will be regrets about not playing Matthews in games 81-82.

I think he plays and gets his goal,then rides the bench and is only used on PP. But he plays, he will be against the top line and best defenders, He won't be facing any tough guys that are willing to take a run at Mathews just to then have to fight Bert and Max. He will be fine and the 70 will be glorious!!

Best LFR of the season Steve! With the completion of yesterday's game and only one hell of a (regular- AND post-season) road trip ahead, over night a true sense of nagging desperate urgency, appears. It's been dwelling, and now it's real. You captured it perfectly.
A timeframe tensing up on the team, on the eve of "what could be, what nobody dares to think" - an insanely martyring stretch in these players careers to prove themselves winners. Some have been there, some sniffed, all of them care about this one achievement like for none other, probably since they were kids.
Over the past years they've all become aware of the magnitude of the challenge ahead, how much it will demand from them, how much it needs. They already know exactly which amount of strides, pushes, crashes might not even be enough. They've invested this amount of effort. They have a good sense of what it takes. This year they might add something they hadn't had for a good decades. A starter that might steal them a game or two, and a number two that can only shine when it's his turn.
But it's on all of them. Worse goalies have won. (Not totally bad ones, but worse ones for sure.) It's in their hands.
And yes, it's in all of their heads, as of today. This has got to be the most stressful week of the year. For the players, and all of us, watching, wishing, waiting.
So call me evil, call me fun-hating, as I officially declare myself glad. Glad Auston didn't hit 70 on Saturday and probably this season. Steve, you touched on it why. Yes, it's the sting!!!!! Tell this ambitious man a story. Tell him how much happier he will be for the rest of his life with that brick of a ring on his finger. Compared to how happy he would be as mister-70.
I watched last night's game (and your commentary) in true team-no-sleep fashion, here from Europe. I wanna mention I had to WORK today AND I'M 40+ !!!! Let that sink in, I'm passionate about the Leafs. Went sleepless through different post-game stuff on CZcams before LFR dropped, started typing a comment under another video, couldn't finish typing as I'm slow in English, but I'd like to add what I had typed there, HERE. Vs the Panthers you don't play any of the following:
Bert, Matthews, JT, Willy, Mitch, Bobb, Holmberg, Kämpf, Reaves, and the entire Defense.
"Why all 'em tough guys there" you ask?
Because them are the ones the Cats r gonna target first. If they can get Liljegren they'll make sure to finish him, FOR GOOD. That's their sole mission in this game. They post a print of his number in their locker, from today on.
Because weather you like it or not, he's the Leafs' key multi-role player this very post season. This probably is already the main season they drafted him for. This is him peaking and rn absolutely NOBODY replacing him. He's the closest the Leafs have to the obligatory huge quarterbacking d-man who:
drives play,
can rip it,
will regularly set people up for high-danger chances,
and actually gets it done IN HIS OWN END,
moves bodies, sacrifices his, provides the good(!) exits,
the connecting force between all offensive and defensive situations. He drives play, and EVERY single game he was out this season their team-defence either STUNK, or was at best very meh, while their offense lacked dimension and support.
"Big Lil" is the one blueliner who makes their game unpredictable. That's the guy EVERY cup champion must have.
No Pietrangelo, no cup.
No Hedman, no double cup.
No Makar, no cup.
No Chara, no cup.
And no, Timothy is none of those players. - But the Panthers aren't dumb man, and they know more than well, that Toronto needs him like a [insert animal-equivalent to the Leaf's D] needs it's head.
Morgan Rielly is NOT the head. He's wings. The Leafs win without him all the time. McCabe, Bennoit, Edmundson, Lyubushkin, are NOT the head. They are legs, arms and body. Make no mistake, Lilly is the guy. The Leafs know it too. He's their best kept secret.
The eye test is enough for any panthers coach with eyes. They will target 37.
For the two remaining pre-playoff games that mean LITERALLY NOTHING:
Call up the entire Marlies defense AND nine forwards to replace the players mentioned. Invite them all to Disneyland (and possibly to get squished, bruised and murdered. Or tell them to hide our there, to not to, idk 😬)
No kidding. You do this in all seriousness.
Lastly, aside from all of that:
F the NHL, for making all these idiotic precautionary measurements a 100% necessary. All this league ever wanted is cheap attention and murder. There's no protection, charging, boarding, crosschecking rules are an alibi, can't recall them being called in 18 years of watching. What a stupid, backfiring marketing strat. What a joke of a league.
It's such a dynamic intense exciting sport at north american rink-size. This league could be so popular worldwide. They simply do not realize how much of a turn off their officiating is, for people who try to follow the league, not to say root for ANY team.

It sucks seeing everyone drag on Brodie but he is definitely in the twilight of his career. He reminds me a lot of Bryan McCabe in his final seasons with the Leafs. It's a shame because he was one of, if not our the best defenceman just a couple of seasons ago. He'll make good plays but when he's bad he's REALLY bad.

People are going to hate me for this but I feel like we're doubting if Auston is ever going to get this close again. Personally I could see him doing it but I feel like Auston himself doesnt want to sit BOTH games and finish with 69 goals.
The argument for resting Matthews is really bad. The chance of him getting injured in a game is extremely low, and he's much more likely to get injured in game 1 of the playoffs when the other team will go all out, so what's the point? It sounds like you are overly paranoid.
You have to let him play until he gets his next goal. that is common sense.

I was at the game and the energy was crazy especially when Matthews was on the ice, and scored. I was hoping to see 70. It was horrible to see McCabe and Liljegren go down and hopefully they are OK. If Gladiator Hockey is a thing next week, the refs and Garden Gnome Gary need to take control.

As a Wing's fan, that was our PK of the season right there. Toronto calling Time Out overall helped us as it rested our best guys on PK, including Larkin. It sucks that the Flyers are basically done as I think they have to hope that what; DET, WSH, and PIT basically all go 0-2 rest of the way while Flyers have to win their last. Speaking of winning your last game, go Flyers go, please wipe the floor with the Caps. DET hasn't made playoffs in 7 years (2nd longest to only Buffalo 11) and it's time to crack the post season again.

As a wings fan, when I saw veleno make that hit, I just thought there goes this game. He's out and 5 minute powerplay against the leafs? Oh boy. He should have gotten the game, but the officiating has been so horrible that I wasn't even surprised that he only got 2. This has been one of the worst officiated seasons I have seen in a while.

Matthews & the Leafs Core record of zero playoff runs should be Auston’s priority.😀 Auston generating low assist records compared to the current top 25 NHL assist leaders is a major area of improvement for Auston as well.

Why pay him top NHL salary - when his assists levels are much lower than elite centres like McDavid and Gretzky.
OV and Selanne and Hull as top goal scorers (without generating top current 25 assists) were not paid at the top NHL salary. Only exception was when winger Bobby Hull joined the WHA jets. Then all WHA teams shared to pay Bobby Hull’s salary to get the WHA going.
I hope over the years Auston plays wing or works on his passing to generate more assists.😀
@@jimlangdon1947 he plays a 200ft game as a center should. He's top notch defensively, and for a guy who is scoring 69~70 goals, still being as efficient defensively, seems to be super undervalued by people who complain about his assists. He's better defensively than Kucherov, McDavid and others (I think MacKinnon is good on both ends and effective on both, but I still think Matthews has an edge). You could make a case for Nylander and Tavares being overpaid, and I wouldn't disagree completely. But thinking Assists are something that makes him overpaid is pretty delusional or, at least in my point of view, simplistic.

Not sure why you disagree - Matthews should get compensated for the value of the goals he scores (comparable to OV & Selanne & Hull - which is awesome) and why you don’t think Matthews’s pay should be discounted for the assists he doesn’t generate - compared even just to the current top 25 NHL assist leaders.

The board wasn't more than a 2 because Liljegren went towards the boards very uncontrolled, so all it took was a minor push for him to eat them face first. You penalize the action, not the outcome. Something like that.

I have been waiting for someone to notice this as much as I have. Yes TJ has had some moments where you wonder but dude you are so absolutely right. I have listened to comments after comments on how bad Brodie is but the sun rises and falls on Rielly and he has his moments truly but how is it when he was suspended and Brodie was paired with Liljegren in the number one pairing and they did fine. I have listened to numerous comments on the O.T. goal that Detroit scored on Sat.. A 4-3 penalty kill and he is getting slammed for not taking Larkin on the winning goal. So let's break this down, Larkin in front ...... Kane has the puck ultimately one of the premier passers in the league ..... Did anyone noticed DeBrincat a right handed shot standing in the OVI shot spot?
