  • Today I'll be showing one of the most impressive pieces I have in my 1:64 scale collection. This 1:64 scale replica of the Peterbilt 281 and Plymouth Valiant used in the 1971 movie Duel was built almost entirely from the ground up. It was a build I took on only 4 years after I got into 1:64 scale diecast customs and was a huge learning curve for me.
The 281 Peterbilt was custom built from a Peterbilt 260 with a DCP frame and other additional parts made which were either pulled off other 1:64 scale trucks or scratch built by hand. The tanker also required the same treatment with a lot of other scratch built parts and modifications. The Valiant was probably the easiest out of everything being converted from a Dodge Dart and only requiring some alterations to the casting and new paint.
Like I said before, these are 2 of the most coveted pieces in my 1:64 scale collection and they've certainly been one of the most talked about pieces on my displays at diecast shows. A lot of work went into these and they've certainly been a foundation for many other 1:64 scale projects I've attempted over the years.

There was only 2 trucks used for the film, the second one from the Train tracks, the Gas Station and the Bus scenes, is still alive today, the main hero truck was practically destroyed, and rumour has it they did salvage the original engine out of the tractor

My research shows 3 trucks were used. You have the original that went over the cliff, and then the truck that was used for the additional scenes was later destroyed in another production. The surviving truck, a 1961 Peterbilt 351 resides at Brad's Trucks in North Carolina. If you compare that one to the one used for the additional scenes, you'll notice quite a few differences between truck and trailer. Examples being no Peterbilt emblems on the hood, shorter trailer, the rust patterns and paint, etc. Supposedly the surviving truck was prepped for the reshoot, but never used on screen. Again, that's just what my research shows.
