      @@davidlamb1107 I don't know who it was that decided that "The Crown" isn't fully embodied by the person who happens to be the reigning monarch at the time, but I bet that person wasn't the monarch. Wars have been fought in England over someone telling the monarch that he or she is subordinate to some abstract institution.

      @@mscott3918, actually no, the crown belongs to... The Crown.
      That is to say, the actual object is the property of the British monarchy, but not the personal property of the monarch herself. So for example, she would not be allowed to sell or even pawn it (as Edward III and Charles I did, both to pay for armies).

      @@gustavmaia The interesting thing is that between William III in 1689 and George V in 1911, no monarch was crowned with it. Victoria had the Imperial State Crown made in 1838 because she was too slight to take the weight, Edward VII was too ill and every other monarch used their own state crown.

      Caused a bit of a problem at George VI's coronation. The Archbishop had added a tiny bit of cloth to he could see which was the front, but a cleaner had "helpfully" removed it.

      They are called The Cullinans, or Granny's Chips
      These two diamonds - known as Cullinan III and IV, or the Third and Fourth Stars of Africa, or just “Granny’s Chips” . Cullinan III is a pear-shaped 94.4 carat diamond and is suspended from Cullinan IV, a square-cut 63.6 carat diamond, in the famous silver Cullinan Brooch setting. They were both given to Queen Mary in 1910 by the South African government.

    Only six monarchs have ever worn this crown, and only for a few minutes on the day of their coronation.
    But you know... .
    Since this crown was made, you just 𝙆𝙉𝙊𝙒 that, at least one point in the last 360 years, some jewel house worker found himself alone in a room with this crown and, for just a brief moment, was like:
    [Puts it on]
    "Here! Look at 𝙈𝙚! I'm a 𝙆𝙄𝙉𝙂! Eh? Wot, wot?" 😆
    [Takes it off quickly and looks around, terrified]
    "Bloody 𝙃𝙀𝙇𝙇! Please, 𝙂𝙊𝘿! Tell me nobody saw that!" 😱
    In 360 years, there is 𝙉𝙊 𝙒𝘼𝙔 that has never happened.

      It's definitely happened, there are multiple urban legends floating around of palace guards messing around on the throne and dressing up in the crown jewels when they are left alone at night. I'm sure the queen would have had a bit of a laugh if she caught them in the act...

    Interesting trivia: until the coronation of George V in 1911, St. Edward's crown was a blank frame; when previously used, it was set with rented jewels due to the propensity of prior monarchs hawking the gemstones.

      When a monarch is crowned with other crown, the St. Edward's Crown is still taken to the coronation ceremony and placed on the high altar of the Westminster Abbey's (except for the coronation of Queen Victoria).

      After being horrified and over the initial shock and saying most unladylike language at the situation (not much else one can do in that situation) she'll swear up and down that year she will find out what Annus Horribis really is.       I suppose she meant "Is it as heavy as I remember?". The last time she probably wore the St. Edwards Crown was 1953. She normally wears the Imperial State Crown for most events.

    Interestingly this crown is just a replica of the one that was destroyed after the English Civil War, after which all of the ancient Crown Jewels were destroyed. I believe the only items which survived were the ampulla and spoon which were used to store and pour the anointing oil
