It's sometime seems like a protest because he was around when they change from 432 Hz to 440 and I wonder if he changed his style a little bit when that happened cuz I noticed some of his high notes were traipsing back and forth. Bravissimo!!!

Having personally met, interacted with and mentored by Ivry, his death was absolutely devastating for me… He was the last true “individual”, an undeniable personality - fearless and absolutely unique, both in life and music - these concepts for him were literally inseparable. His life was all about his musical expression. Such honesty in every note. Unparalleled sense of timing and inimitable style. As for the Paganini concerto, there are many great recordings I grew up listening to: Kogan, Tretyakov, etc. However, Ivry takes it to a different level in terms of freedom of expression. From everything I’ve read about Paganini, I have to say Gitlis’ interpretation comes closest to the essence of Paganini and to what the epoch of Romanticism was all about.
Gitlis is never boring & always quite intelligent in his phrasings. He is an international treasure. This is about as good as it gets, certainly on the level of the great Michael Rabin. Gitlis never ceases to amaze. No gimmicks, just phenomenal playing. A brilliant musician.

( 16 years ). 10 years later I start to understand what means Paganini, Now, I adore him . I think Gitlis plays very well, but steely and faster . 10 years ago i found Barati . RIP Ivry ! Love this concerto, I heard it the first time when in the 80s I watched film Paganini of Klaus Kinsky with Kinsky himself at Dolby where he brought it for a special showing and this concerto played throughout the film and I fell in love with it and Ivry's interpretation is amazing.
Gitlis is Gitlis. Yes, he's wild, he's a bit sloppy, sometimes he takes such fast tempi that you can barely follow the music (his Sibelius for instance, also on youtube) BUT he is also original, always interesting and the sheer joy of playing the violin which he emanates is so overwhelming and seductive, no serious lover of violin repertory could not have at least a few Gitlis recordings on the shelf. For me, he's the greatest gypsy violinist of all time.

Maestro Paganini was the master of the octaves and tenths which are the most difficult in the violin not to mention his beautiful orchestral score and the difficulties that accompanied every note in that so hard to play instrument that is the violin, but so melodious that can move the most hardened person. So sick of 7 year old kids trying to play this. Those parents torturing their kids with a stupid ambitious idea that their kid should play Paganini at 7. They don't understand that just playing meaningless notes is not the same as really playing the music. Ivry never just plays notes, he sends a message. Truly inspiring performances. Big difference.
Oh thank the lord, finally someone with some sense!!! Honestly, you are so correct in what you say, and yet nobody seems to understand. You wouldn’t believe how many kids these days-and really most of the young “celebrity” violinists-are out there playing with brilliant technical skills, yes, but with a cold and hollow sound and without a shred of musicality. There’s a difference between simply playing the notes and then trying to understand tempo and dynamics and trying to play the notes beautifully, trying to be musical. It’s hard to explain really in just words, but this musicality is what separates the truly great from the merely technically clever. This is what separates Ivey Gitlis or Leonid Kogan from Ray Chen or Chuanyun Li. So it goes for piano and so it goes for piano. It doesn’t matter if you can play the notes. You either have the soul or you don’t. I may not be as technically brilliant as Ivry. But I care less about technical brilliance than I do about beauty. I will play a piece a bit slower if it means I can cultivate a richer and more textured sound. Sound is everything! Thank you for saying what you say. You truly get it!

Gitlis hardly deserves comparison to Gypsy violinists, however wonderful they are. His playing and interpretation is inspired and idiomatically expressive. I’d say this is world class playing - what he says with the violin goes beyond technique. One would hope that inspiration beyond technical execution is still the prize most valued above all else by musical artists. He lives in a category of his own along with many other instrumental and conducting masters of the past (Shafran, Gendron, Heifetz, Menuhin, Argerich, Kocsis, Furtwängler, Celibadache to name just a few).
Too fast, missing notes, bla bla bla. Listen folks. Musically Paganini is not overly complicated. It's not Brahms, not Beethoven and certainly not Bach. You need colour for Paganini. Gitlis gave colour to this piece. And that's what puts him along side the great violinists of the 20th century. Turn on this record and you now it's Gitlis, after a few notes. Same would be the case for a Menuhin, Kreisler, Heifetz or Ferras recording. Can you say the same for Mutter, Chang, Fischer or Jansen? No. Sure, they play it differently, a bit louder here and there, a bit faster here and there, a bit more ore less time taken there and there. But the SOUND? No difference, replaceable, and indistinguishable. You must admit that to copy Gitlis' rendition you would have a waaay tougher time than copying most of todays "great" violinists (few are the exceptions).
he isn't missing notes, he is entirely out of tune. ever played a violin? the damn things are temperamental. luckily ivry aged into a form of violinist that became utterly perfect. a true artist. .
I would have liked to have a Heifetz recording of this, but sadly I don't think it's been made. I'll make due with Menuhin and Gitlis just fine for now.

Kogan is 2nd to this, in my mind. Kogan's incredible techinique is totally at the service of the music, and "every note is like a jewel", as my violin teacher Arianna Bronne used to say. But there is just more life and improvisatory feeling in this version.
Absolutely brilliant! I have never heard a better tone on any violin! Wonder who the maker is? I would like to see Gitlis and Chang playing a duo of this most fabulous and endearing,marvelous and dextrous piece of music! Love it

It is ok, but the tempo is so fast he loses the melodic flow..He has skip a lot of the written notes. He is really at times straining. I much prefer the old Menuhin recording of1947 or so.
There is and will be only one Ivry. He is just so unique. No one plays like him. There is absolutely no similar playing. God bless him.

He has only one tempo for anything other than a melody--as fast or faster than he can play. Too bad. Because aside from that he would be really great.
