  • The 3rd generation of Trek's popular Verve+ electric bike maintains the excellent quality of previous models while providing more power and range, supported by a large network of dealers and available in a wide range of size and frame options. Excellent craftsmanship and tuning showcase Trek's prowess in bicycle manufacturing, accessories are seamlessly integrated and easy to operate thanks to always-on lights and the simplicity of the Bosch Purion display, ready for commuting with a MIK-compatible rack, full-length fenders, and a suspension seatpost. The electrical system has upgraded to the Bosch Active Line Plus motor along with a seamlessly integrated PowerTube 500 battery, with excellent range and responsive performance and the option to add an additional 400wh of battery capacity with the Bosch Range Boost system. No way to use walk mode or turn off the lights due to safety concerns, bottle cage bosses are nice to have but utilizing them may prevent removing the battery, the charging port is positioned near the left crank and thus more vulnerable to accidental damage.

      Great Review : Although You looked like a Giant on the Small Frame Size : I currently Own a NON Electric Trek Verve 3 Debating Between this and the Allaint +7 . Which Trek informs me The Quill Steering Tube supported in The Verve is an Option available after Purchase for the Alliant > I'm 6' 1" My Current Verve is L . I would likely go XL with a New Bike : Have you ridden an Alliant+7 to compare the Motor with the Verve +3 ? You seemed to have no issues getting to the 20 MPH : I average 30 mile rides 3 Times weekly :
      At 64 years old There are rides where I wish I had some extra energy : Especially this time of Year when the Wind in your face really effects your cadence : Again Great Review

    I love my verve 3. I’m 62 and went from couch to 26.75 miles in 1 day. It is just enough assist without letting the bike do all the work (like using a throttle). Also, there IS walk assist (turn on the power, put the bike in eco mode, press the walk button on the bottom of the controller and immediately press the “+” button.). One more thing, my gears do not make any clunking noise when shifting; I think that bike just needed adjusting. Thanks for the video!! 😊

      Have you ridden any on dirt roads or trails? Just mild ones. He made out that this was for pavement only! But the Verve 3 regular bike is considered a hybrid with some off road potential.

      Me too! I’m 56 and got my first e-bike (verve + 3) in 2020 just after the pandemic hit. I went from couch to 15-17 miles daily! I LOVE it! I enjoy the walk assist as well. The only down side is the weight of the bike. I’ve fallen twice on it and sadly tore a tendon on the inside of my right knee from the bike falling on top of me and my leg twisting. (What caused the fall was actually taking a turn onto a street where some water was running and as soon as both tires hit the water the bike slid right out from under me! Ouch!) *I decided to purchase some tires that have tread over the entire surface of the tire instead of the stock tires that have no tread in the center of each tire. Good news is I’m fully back on my bike and riding daily again! I would definitely purchase this same bike again! Nice review!

    I am a Trekker and I went into the search for an ebike saying I am going to stay away from Trek. I’ve demo’ed 8-10 different ebikes and none knocked my socks off. I rented a Verve 2+ to do the D&L Lower Gorge Trail in Jim Thorpe PA and I was immediately impressed. We rode 38 miles mostly in eco mode and occasionally in touring mode and I knew I had to buy one. Loved the ride, the saddle, felt comfortable and stable, with no reservations. Your review is spot on from my experience.

    I just bought a Trek Verve+S4 E-Bike, and I am loving it. Coming from a trek verve 3 standard bike, the upgrade was very simple. I love the assist on it, especially when riding into a headwind. Even though this video covers an older model of the verve Ebike, there was enough in common with what I’m writing now to make it very useful to me. 👍🚲 would love to see you do a similar video reviewing the. I’ve also test ridden the Verve 3 and can vouch for its comfortable ride, especially the seat. Many bike seats are not very comfortable for long rides and are often torturous. I don’t see any virtue in suffering to be “Macho” here. Not only is the Verve 3 seat wide enough for good butt support, it also features a deep channel in the middle that really helps us males for prostate comfort. Then the lightweightness as described is truly worthwhile - the eBike I own is nearly 75 lbs. without any accessories! This makes for much harder pedaling should you run out of battery, making it almost battery dependent. The downsides to the Verve 3 for me is the speed limiter at 20 mph. I often ride between 20-25 mph and it’s frustrating to feel a definite drag just before you reach 20 mph. It almost feels Ike the bike is resisting you unless you are on a downhill run. The eBike I have came set at 20 mph assist but I was able to change it to 25. Other than that, this is a fantastic eBike and the option to add a second battery for long distant rides is super! Oh, and the motor is truly very quiet and responsive. Thanks for the great review!

    I know the price is much more than a Rad or Ride1Up but a mid-drive motor can be worth the extra money. I have the 700 Series from Ride1Up and the Liv Amiti E +4 which is a mid drive and the difference is significant. A good mid-drive system is superior to a hub motor. A torque sensor on a hub can help but still doesn’t provide the more natural riding experience a mid-drive can deliver. There are cheaper mid-drives out there. Trek is always pricey.

    Further to my review a few months ago. It turns out my bike frame was not made square - was bent - from manufacture fault. After much effort on the part of my bike supplier, trek has finally sent a kit to straighten the frame and supplier reports that the battery now goes in easily. I’ve yet to see because the bike supplier is trying to find a front suspension fork to manage the roughness of the ride - once again they needed to get info from trek - they finally got that info and the front fork has been ordered and hopefully will be installed this week. I’m hopeful but will wait and see.
    If anyone is having a problem with the battery install and staying in, the frame has probably been bent and there IS A KIT to fix that problem so get your bike service people to get the kit from trek - it took a while for my supplier to recognize the bent frame so tell them to look at it and ask trek for the kit to fix the problem - be persistent!
    Don’t order suspension forks until supplier asks trek exactly what to order to fix the roughness of the ride - it’s actually very reasonably priced and worth replacing the forks that come with the bike!

      I forgot to note II’m riding the Verve plus 3 - I bought it in 2022- the battery is the version where the battery is integrated into the frame of the bike - this design while sleek and less easy to steal the battery essentially leaves the main frame portion with a hollow cavity so it’s harder to get or keep it straight. I also have the step through model - not sure if that could also affect the stability of the frame. I like the bike - hopefully the few months of dancing with trek has resulted in a fix that makes battery install better. While trek danced around the problem with the frame my bike supplier - Unuted Cycle in Edmonton - has given me a loaner to use at no cost to me. I’ve put over 500K on the loaner since they gave it to me a month and a half ago so this has been a significant benefit to me - my season of riding would have been gone if they hadn’t.

    I’m a bit confused over the difference between Bosch’s Eco vs Turbo modes. You mentioned there’s a 270% of power, but also mention that there’s around 50 or 60nm of torque. What is the 270% measured against? Eco Mode? In which case all these power levels sound like a marketing trick?
    The Bafang M400 mid-motor has 36V 250 watt motor with 80nm of torque. On my Tern D8, it has 5 Pedal assist levels (no throttle). Does the Active Line + with a lower torque have more power at it’s highest power setting or does the Bafang M400 with 80nm torque have more power? Thanks for clarifying, as I’m considering getting a Tern Q9 or S10 which use an Active Line + and Performance Line respectively and I get confused because both have lower torque levels than my Tern D8

    • @TysonRoehrkasse
      @TysonRoehrkasse Před 3 lety +1

      Hey Robert, the Active Line Plus here has 50nm of torque and 270% max assist when in the highest setting (Turbo). My understanding is that the 270% is measured against the power input of the rider. In Eco the max assist is only 40%, Tour is 100%, and so on. You can see this page which has a detailed breakdown of the torque, max assist, and other metrics for all Bosch motors: www.bosch-ebike.com/us/products/drive-units/
      The Bafang you mentioned does indeed have more torque. Whether it has more "power" is kind of hard to quantify. Having more torque will definitely feel like more power on steep slopes, so you see a lot of high-torque motors on mountain bikes. On flat surfaces the extra torque could help you accelerate faster but in terms of top speed it doesn't matter.
      I haven't actually test ridden anything with the M400, so I can't say for sure how the experience compares.

  • @lauriewilson-larson1582

    you skimmed over the install of that battery! There's a design flaw in the battery compartment that makes installing the battery either simple or extremely challenging! The locking mechanism that the key is attached to comes loose and there's a risk the battery will either not install or fall out after install. I keep a strap on mine to ensure the battery stays installed while riding it. There are many comments online that indicate the installation of the battery is problematic. I've spent a few minutes to half an hour trying to reinstall the battery into the compartment! I've taken it back to the store where I bought the bike several times in the year I've owned it and they adjust it and can install it once while I'm there but then when I try, it becomes sticky and after a few removal and installs the problem becomes increasingly more frustrating and the mechanism needs to be adjusted again! The supplier is constantly having to adjust the thing! Trek needs to come up with a fix for this design flaw! I love the pedal assist and motor for the Verve+3 and the quietness of the pedal assist motor. I do not love the lack of suspension in the front forks - the thing rides a little like a tank and my wrists and shoulders are letting me know they are not happy. I have a small frame and am 5'3". The distance between the seat and the handlebars could be shortened a little - that would improve rider control of a bike that has a bit of weight that riders need to learn to manage. Would I buy pedal assist versus throttle - absolutely! would I buy another or recommend the Verve +3 - not at this time. That battery problem is a major thumbs down and the rough ride is also a thumbs down.

    Here's a question, looking at something like this from trek, as I like the brand and have had good luck. Is this a better value than something like a super73-r for around the same price? Spec wise the super73 seems better on paper

    • @Altema22
      @Altema22 Před 2 lety +1

      I'm late to the game (just saw this video), but I do have experience with both bikes. The Super73 does have better specs on paper, and is more robust. Plus, you have the option of a throttle in the US for times you want to just enjoy the scenery, run errands, or relax. However, the Super is not good for pedaling due to the riding position and short crank arms. If you want more of a "boosted cycling experience", or something that is more of a traditional bike, the Trek would be better. You can't beat the Super73 Community though, and for some that may be worth any tradeoffs.

    • @GFam0703
      @GFam0703 Před rokem

      Specs may look better on "paper" but that's where it stops. You know that the Verve+ bikes are equipped with quality Bosch electronics and that the bike features a mid-drive system which is regarded as much better than a wheel driven setup. The Super73 website doesn't mention the motor's manufacturer, a sure sign that it's a Chinese made system. When you need service, where do you think you'll be able to get parts or someone to service the bike? That last part should be on the minds of EVERYONE shopping for an e-bike.

    I had plans to add a new controller and display to improve torque and also had intentions to swap out the motor and battery for the ultimate upgrade.
    Now I’m not sure if I should return the Rover 5, if I can mod the Verve+ similar to the Rover I’ll keep the Verve+.

    So my question is does the Verve+ have the ability to be modded like the Rover?

    • @TysonRoehrkasse
      @TysonRoehrkasse Před 3 lety +2

      Hey Richard, sorry this response is coming in late... but the answer is no, the Verve+ would not be easy to mod. The integration of the Bosch drive system would make it difficult to swap out components, you'd need to either get Bosch-compatible upgrades (or replace everything), and I'm pretty sure those modifications would void the Trek warranty (which is one of the main reasons to buy a Trek bike in the first place). So... hopefully you went with the Rad!

      They're not similar. Sure Trek is a bit pricier but it's certainly not double. Perhaps a cheaper brand could do this exact same bike for $2300-$2500 instead of $3000. But you are getting service and support and warranty that exceeds most of those online companies. Plus the attention to detail is nice and looks much better than the cheaper Ebikes.

While they don't have a network of stores or service centers, typically you take their bike to any shop and they reimburse you for the cost. Trek IS using better hardware than many budget ebikes, but I don't think the extra cost is worth it. You're talking double the price for a mid-drive with a smaller battery and no suspension. Doesn't add up to me.

    • @kumsman
      @kumsman Před 3 lety +4

      @@Svid1701D I have actually looked at that bike and it is nice however it uses hub motor. A mid motor costs much more and it is able to take advantage of the gears on the bike. This means a mid motor will do uphills and downhills much better than any hub motor. It also weighs less and is more efficient. Ride1up has lower components (7speed, acera) and weighs 62lbs and range is only 50 miles. The Trek has 9speed, Alivio and a range of up to 100miles! You are comparing apples to oranges. That being said, hub motors are fine and certainly Ride1up makes many people very happy.
      As I said earlier, if ride1up really tried to match the Trek it would probably end up being $2500, where the Trek is $3000. I'll agree there is a $500 upcharge for Trek but you get really good warranty, support, bike is assembled and fitted for you, etc.

    Trek or any bike manufacturer for that matter limiting or disabling features like walk assist or limit to 20 mph max because of "safety" or "speed limit bylaws" is like Ford limiting all their vehicles to state/provincial/territory/country max speed limit like 50mph for example... its not the responsibility of the manufacturer to dictate how fast a person is allowed to go on their ebike or any other kind of transportation device. If car manufacturers started to limit cars to only 50 MPH, people would start rioting.

    • @Svid1701D
      @Svid1701D Před 3 lety +1

      Correct, BUT, bikes are not cars and the rules are not the same. Your analogy is closer to driving an F1 race car on a city street without proper turns signals and other feature that would make it street legal. E-bikes have different classifications and in order to reach the widest customer base, e-bike manufacturers typically limit speed, or maybe don't even have a throttle so that the bike is compliant with laws in the most territories. When e-bikes start reaching speeds of 30+ mph, they start being classified more as a moped and less as a bike in many areas. This may require a license, insurance, a helmet, turn signals, etc.
