I have tackled a drywall project myself on a building I bought , did a whole apartment, you have taught me so much with your videos. Thanks you so much.
There's so much good information about various subjects in every video! I came to this video to find out some tips about painting smooth walls, but also learned about installing trim and flooring in an old house - which is then next item on my To Do list. Thanks so much!
thank you for sharing your knowledge with everyone. I am 6 months into starting my remodeling company on my own. I have alot of experience in many different trades and i know i dont know everything. So it helps to watch your videos and pick up little tricks and tips here and there, or even a different way of doing things. I am always learning and looking for people who are as generous as you are when it comes to mentoring. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the tips and the demonstration! I bought my first house back in March, a 50s rambler that was smoked in for years. Pulling everything (wallpaper on wallpaper) and priming every single surface with Zinsser BIN. May as well do it right with all your tips!! Thanks again!
I've been binge-watching your videos and my main question was regarding cleaning the sanding dust off the wall. Finally have an answer after this video!
just dont exagerate, his tip is nice but if u have too much dust on the wall, its gona be messy
When I'm doing work on my house, like getting my ceilings and walls absolutely perfect, there's a little voice inside guiding me. I discovered that voice was Jeff.
Agreed lol
I literally had his voice in my head doing walls and painting
It'd be cooler if it was like Morgan Freemans voice.
I always end up eating my compound because it looks like frosting and I never finish my project
Hey Jeff I’ve watched videos of pro painters and drywall pros and they’ve suggested to dry mop the wall and ceiling after sanding and before priming. thanks for all that you do.
If Jeff says you don't have to do it, then it's just wasting time and time is money
Thank you so much for sharing these educating videos. I was in the process of painting my parents bathroom which had not been touched in 25 years. Unfortunately, they decided to use mobile home wall covering when they built back in 1975 and as a change. The walls were Kiltz with out even cleaning more less preping for texture or loose spots in the vinyl. Which over the years cracked and pealed one , two and in some spots several layers of the wood down to the gypsum. Watching Your videos made it possible for me to complete the project with an almost flawless flush painted surface. My parents are so pleased. I will carry your simple easy to understand and follow knowledge with me for future projects and will share your link for reference on other DYI projects. Thanks Again, Karen Wilson
I am doing my basement and your videos are what I needed for success. Thanks so much
Jeff, I love your videos! I would really like to see a video from you on how to do different drywall textures. I don't seem to find really any good videos on that.
Thank you for your videos, My question about sanding the drywall and then wiping it down prior to primer was answered in this video. Thanks again great work.
5:45 - Exactly “the answer is NO.”
What if you’re not priming?
4:50 sanding drywall hole patches
5:50 how to deal with dust on walls
👉👉👉6:30 WHOLE PROCESS SUMMARY
6:45 add thin layer of primer over patches
7:00 sand whole wall
8:00 add 2nd layer of primer over patches to avoid flashing
9:25 NO TAPE CUT IN with paint color
11:00 paint brush light strokes on patches then use mini roller to go over patches again
15:15 cut in and then roll one wall at a time while its still wet
I got this instead of the premixed. It seems to be working pretty well thanks.
So you do one coat of a good primer, than two coats of paint. Painting our new house. Your videos have helped so much.
You ARE the Boss Ross of Home Renovation. Love your Channel.
👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you so much 😊
That wall looks perfectly smooth. How does the process get modified for textured walls say with a knock down texture?
Outstanding info and tips TY!
Cheers B Jones!
Too nice Jeff, doing all that work just for a visual. I plan interior spaces in 3d and near enough photo real renders. That way it can be fully visualised in advance. It also helps that my girlfriend gets no say what colours go on the walls 😅
There is a method that works for everyone. I have never worked off a 3d rendered picture.
Danke für das informative Video.
Thanks for this, you are literally releasing videos as I'm in need of the knowledge. Thanks again for your advice and knowledge.
You are just amazing man! thank you for such great guidance on everything!
My pleasure!
WOOOOOOOO!! Awesome tips Jeff!!
Ohhhh Yeah!!!! Birdman back in the chat!
Three things:
Your patience while working and teaching simultaneously is remarkable although I would like to see some of your bloopers.
The tools you reveal were beautifully demonstrated.
Tips and Tricks saved me not only time but frustration as well.
Thank You,

I never realized you were supposed to sand in between primer coats. Good to know!
Me neither! I’m using a primer/topcoat in 1, would the dust cause problems when I’m doing my 2nd and final coat?
Yes it really makes a difference. So smooth and just takes a few minutes
I vaccume the walls after I do my initial heavy sanding. Then I prime and seal everything come back and do the prime check re sand everything then finish the job. Don't leave dust on the wall its a shitty way of doing stuff.
What sandpaper grit should I use for sanding the primed walls?
A little trick I've learn to show drywall mistakes. I use an LED flashlight, hold it flush against the wall, so the beam is parallel to the wall. You may need to close the blinds. That will show EVERY single defect in the wall. From the wave of the wall, down to a hair that got stuck in the paint. No need to do a first coat, and wait for the sun to be just right.
Also the perfect way for you start questioning your life's choices 😅
@@Soliber why is that?
@@EmptyPsychosis you see all the mistakes you’ve made and start to think you should just start over 😄
@@Soliber fair enough. This method actually saved me from buying a house that would have financially ruined me. It was about 100 years old and next to a lake. The previous owner did a lot of upgrades to make it look really nice. I noticed some discoloration on the brick around the fireplace, and I thought "well, it's a hundred years old, it's probably had a flood before in that time. No big deal." Then I put my light to the wall and aimed down. I saw a horizontal line 3' high in the drywall going around every wall. Which is standard replacement procedure for flood damage. Seeing that, combined with the fact everything else looked recently replaced, I talked to the neighbors and found out that it floods at least once a year there.
I went to CZcams to figure best way to remove drywall dust before painting. But here I learn I can leave the dust and it only makes the final results better. It seems to me that he brushes the areas with the dust on the wall (light brushing over the patches). Helpful video.
Thanks Sir Jeff!!
Superb tips! Thanks again guys
Cheers Eric!
Jeff how does a DIYer fix or upgrade or just smooth out 70s, textured drywall and popcorn ceiling? Thank you for all these videos. Even though your codes are different that ours down here it's still invaluable information.
Love your work and video
Nothing feels more satisfying then sanding down a skim coat
good video i recommend it to friends
Do you need to add joint compound to the entire drywall or just where the drywall connects to other pieces and/or where there are spots you are fixing on the wall?
I love to use flowtrol to help
Jeff, when mudding a plaster wall with a swirl pattern...do you use the same mud you do on drywall? Also, do you just paint with roller, etc as you do for drywall?
👀 damnit Jeff I need to see the finished product so I can start mine.
Part 6 next...stay tuned. Cheers, Jeff
6?!? 🤣
Jeff, will 90-minute compound also not show through? Thank you!
Boy can I relate. From the beginning to the end LOL I rented out my house for years and boy do people like to mess up walls. With a light coming in I missed so much in my living room but there's no way I'm going back but in the bedroom it's going to be perfect LOL
Hey Jeff! What color gray was that? It looks great!
Hey Jeff, I decided to finish my basement myself. So it's not the most cleanest and smoothest of walls to say the least. Do you have any suggestions to a thick primer or anything to help me hide or blend in my blemishes?
Good tips
Jeff what grits of sandpaper should we use ?
250 mid range and then down to like 150/100 for finer sanding. But 250 is good enough for most places.
Thanks for your videos and I became a member today.
After applying PVA primer and doing more repair on finishing, I would like to know if I have to do priming again after the touch-ups with join compound or 45 Easy sanding.
yes! all patch work need to be sealed with a primer before painting. Cheers!
Hey! Planning to build an outdoor sauna, shed style building. Any tips on exterior materials/ roof/insulation, or any watch outs for such a project? Thanks!
it is all about your foundation. focus extra on that and the rest goes smoothly!
Jeff! Another great video. I do think you forgot to put the link for your specialty tools video. :) I hunted but didn't see it.
The link to my Amazon page is in the description. You will see Drywall Tools You Need listed there. Cheers, Jeff

Is it just a regional thing to have textured finished walls? I’ve watched this series and the series from awhile back and neither textures before paint.. thanks for any feedback!
Nice work
Cheers!
i do high end auto body paint work. so a lot of this stuff is similar but in a different aspects. (helps i was a contractor assistant when i was a teenager for a few years) just being familiar with materials goes a long way. i have to be extremely picky as far as prep work. usually im only dealing with a small area with little room for imperfection... but, what im getting at as you where saying you need to look over very large spaces. as far as i know being picky is important but you need to get the job done. everyone has to find their happy medium. love your vids man keep it up! Im moving into a fixer upper and nothing wrong with a refresh or learning something new while your at it, appreciate what you do!
I do all of my paint 1st then we lay the flooring in then we do the trim Plus it is so much easier for me to do it that way because I don’t like to lay down any thing
Hey Jeff, any chance you could post the name of that paint color?
Thank you Jeff. Just one question. what grit sand paper do you use to sand between paint coats? thank you
So you are saying that I really don't have to use TSP or wash and clean up most of that drywall dust that ison the walls before priming?
When you're talking about priming, are you talking about just painting more than one coat, or do you mean a colored primer?
Can you go over fixing bad tape and mud jobs from past owners? Like when they start peeling off the walls or cracking
I 2nd this question!
He has a video on repairing damaged sheetrock. He covers everything, brown paper showing, holes, sheetrock with big gaps between. It’s like the sheetrock wall of shame and he makes it perfect. Go to the sheetrock (drywall) playlist.
If you find you have flashing after 2 coats, would you redo everything? Sand, prime and re-paint the the entire wall?
Only if it bothers you.
I'm sanding and spackling a painted room now. Do you suggest wiping down the blue paint before primer or no?
Hi Jeff first thank you so much for what you are doing here. You are giving us rookies enough confidence and knowledge to do jobs way above our capabilities. I'm remodelling my bathroom and you are now my favorite guy. I lovehow you take the time to explain important theories! Got a couple questions. I just finished watching your video about installing subfloor. Your emphasis about the importance of how close the screws need to be make perfect sense. I just finished removing the old tile floor - an inch and a half of cement and tile. I got 5/8 subfloor now and will need to add more plywood. The metal pipe for the toilet seat is now sitting about 1.5 above the original subfloor. Do I need to add plywood and possibly cement boards so that my tile floor end up being flush with the toilet seat pipe? Thank you!
Hi Tony. You want the top of the toilet flange to be 1/4" proud of the finished flooring. Cheers!
Do you have a video on how to re-texture a wall? We bought a house with the crowfeet texture and looking to sand it down and make it flat. Thoughts?
Aloha Jeff! Need help. Internet is confusing me, so I need to go to you for this one. What primer do you suggest for us here in the States for skimmed walls? My room is ready to go...
Do you worry about removing dust when sanding in between coats of paint?
What kind of primer do you recommend? Is kilz a good option?
TONS of great tips in this 6 Part Drywall series!
I apologize if this is a really "newbie" type of question but, Which grit # sanding disc would you suggest using for the radial sander when sanding between coats of paint?
180, cheers!
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY which company invented the drywall sanding machine?
Question: can a 90 min mud be used just as easily for this kind of touch ups? Some of the other vids specifically mentioned 45 min mud as well. Thx!
Love the vids, I've picked up so much over the past couple months since I first caught one of your vids!
Yes, 90 is good too
Favorite primer for drywall AND plaster? (Thanks!)
Also- can I flash the dark knots on the cedar paneling?
I have cedar walls, should I clean those with soap and water before my primer?
I'm wondering if you dry mop after tape and mud, wouldn't you then just prime and paint without needing to sand after primer? By skipping the mopping you need to sand bc of the rough surface?
Man ur really good
Sanding between prime coats or all paint coats? I am going to prime an already painted dark wall, then I was going to put my 2 paint coats on.
how do you pick your paint? what do you think of paint and primer in one?
If I'm paining a lighter color over a dark color, do you suggest a prime coat?
Sir, you are a hero, and I am thankful for your channel's existence in guiding my home project.
Jeff is like the Bob Ross of Drywall!
Do I need to tape and mud, and do corners, if I'm going to be covering those corners and edges with wood (i.e. faux posts)?
Can I replace primer with flat white paint? Seems like I'd need just one coat of the flat white paint instead of two coats with the primer. We're painting the whole house so it'll be good to save time BUT I don't want to do something that wont look good over time. The final paint is egg shell finish. Any advice is much appreciated! Thank you.
This guy is like the Leonardo da Vinci of painting homes!
Hello, I have a question - in your videos (and most other videos i've seen which are made in US) the drywall is installed directly on the the timber/wood. In here (Romania), I've seen that all of it is installed on a series of metal frames OR they put some small metal pieces on the wood and on them they install the drywall. They say they are doing this beause "the wood works" and in time small cracks will form on the drywall/paint. Is it something "overengineered" from your experience ? i`m asking this because soon I`m starting to build a wood frame house (not me, the contractor) and i`d like to know how to proceed ;p Thanks man!
I'm a professional painter so there are definitely things I disagree with but solid advice in general
Just want to be clear..........do you sand the primer coat too or just between the 2 finish paint coats?
Good morning Jeff.
Just completed sanding.
Do I need to clean or wash walls before applying primer??
Thanks in advance.😎
Merry Christmas. 🎄🎄🎁🎁🍺
Ok... Im an idiot. 😎. You answered that in the video and somehow missed it.
(Obviously my wife’s fault!)
Hmmmmm, before you put your first layer of paint on your wall which has already been painted, what do you do? Do you sand it and then add the first layer of paint?
Do you use an oil based primer?
Did you sand or anything before applying the compound patch?
is there a ceiling prep and paint video?
Jeff what colour have you used?
JEFF!!
Ricco!!!!!!!!
Hi! Just wanted to check to make sure I'm doing the steps correctly
1. Three coats of Mud
2. One coat of Primer
3. Paint one coat of the color
4. Then prime check?
Also, what primer do you recommend?
Good question. I was not sure about the order either. Wish Jeff would have clarified.
I did one coat of cut in with PVA primer on new drywall but rolled two coats. Is this a problem? If so should I cut in again and roll one more time?
After sanding the first coat, do you wipe it down or leave it?
So I'm a little confused, is that paint on the walls now or primer? And are you saying that you sand the walls down with the primer on it before you start with the final coats of paint? Or do you sand between coat one and coat two of the paint?
Sand everything and inbetween every coat you do. Remember one thing, paint plus sand in every application you ever do. Just use 220 grit so you don't damage it and lightly rust it out.
What type of paint would you recommend? Eggshell or Semi-Gloss or Full Gloss for a living room?
UltimateArtistT good lord eggshell would be the glossiest finish I’d ever do for a living room wall. High quality paints these days are washable and scrubbable, so I use flat (BM Aura or SW Emerald). Best color rendering and best hide. For stairways, hallways, or anywhere where hands and things are likely to touch, I use eggshell. Using higher sheens shows way more imperfections and just really makes a room look terrible especially if you’re using 3/8 or 1/2” rollers. I use satin or semi-gloss on trim and cabinetry (with either a brush or mohair roller), and honestly can’t say I’ve ever used full gloss for anything. Bathrooms.... now that’s a whole other animal. Level 5 or hard troweled plaster can take higher gloss, but most homeowners aren’t in that boat.
@@danervin2530 With respect i use pearl or satin. Flat is for ceilings so you don’t see as many imperfections from ceiling lights. But if I was a contractor I would use flat so that I didn’t have to do as good a plaster job.
Hey Jeff, do you by chance have a video/recommendation on painting over a small patch job with the same colour paint as the wall and not painting the entire wall. I’m worried I’ll end up noticing spot I’ve painted over afterwards. Thanks!
That my friend is impossible. You will always notice it because there is always a different level of acrylic in the paint from the time you start to the time you finish. patching requires the complete wall or it will be noticeable. the good new is once the patch is primed and first coated you only need to roll the wall 1 time. Cheers!
Thanks for getting back to me. Luckily the walls are not that large to paint. Keep doing what your doing. Your videos are very informative and entertaining! I’m using all your tips on repainting my kitchen this weekend!
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY thank you. I had the same question
What grit sandpaper should we use, the lowest?
So I'm painting a dark green basement with LOTS of imperfections in the drywall. The method I went with was: 1)mudded imperfections 2)sanded entire wall including patches, 3) primed walls completely,4) lightly sanded primed walls, and 5) finally wall paint (2 coats). Am I doing too much? Do I need to sand after priming?
You sand after priming. You sand inbetween your coats of paint until your final one is on. All 220 grit light rusty sanding your doing the correct steps. Use hotset mud for your patches. Doesnt shrink and is a better product then all purpose. Also doesnt technically need to be primed but always good practice too prime anyways.
Maybe I missed it but why did you only prime small patches of the wall instead of the whole thing before painting?
Is it ok to paint just primer on backerboard around the bathtub?
Which sandpaper grit do you use between coats?
what if you're going with 1 coat paint and primer in one? like Behr Marquee, can we get away with fine sanding the patched up areas and then just doing 1 coat of paint?
How does this change when the wall is plaster instead of drywall? Or does it not change at all?
