Hello it's the Fried Chicken Queen herself. This is another one of my attempts to get KFC to sponsor me. I'm just kidding but I do love, love them!
KFCs everywhere have different menu items and the flavors are adjusted according to the local's preferences. In some KFCs in Asia - there are PORTUGUESE EGG TARTS! YES, eat creamy custard filled pastries with your fried chicken.
In this video we dive into the history of how these egg tarts got on KFC's menu! Did you know the recipe actually comes from the famous egg tart bakeries - Lord Stow's and Magaret Cafe e Nata in Macau?
If you're still reading this I'll give you more fun facts! You deserve it. Technically "Asian egg tarts" appeared in Hong Kong around the 1950s in cafes. Hong Kong was under British rule from 1950s to 1997 that's why those Asian egg tarts stem influence from British custard tarts.
Macau was a Portuguese island for over 400 years and that's why Portuguese egg tarts spread from there into Asia.
Of course, historians have different stories and can (probably have) argued over egg tarts origins. But I think we can all agree on this: egg tarts are darn delicious.

Judy L
She got that Andrew Zimmern vibe. I like it. She is awesome.
If you are ever in Lisbon, Portugal, you can get the original egg tarts from the 1800s, they are called "Pasteis de Belem". Eat them hot, fresh out of the oven and with a dusting of cinnamon, it's heaven on earth!
Veon1 drools
Yes yes, I agree.
"So now it's time for a history lesson..." *puts on extra-cute history glasses*
The portuguese ones are called "Pastéis de Nata" :)
OK IM SOLD!! We are going to try one of everything in one of those bakeries. It all looks so freaking good and girrrlll you know I LOVE FOOD. PAHAHA -Ash
OMG THEIR EGG TARTS ARE THE BESTTTTTT!!!
Here am I binge watching a lot of cupoftj's vlogs hahaha am I too late?
it was a delight to see you on the endless adventure, and now on your own travel blog. very nice.
I prefer the Portugese style vs the Canto Dan Tat. You can get the Portugese ones at any legit Portugese bakeries in Greater Toronto. Always have to get some whenever I am in TO.
Steve Choy lucky none up here in Alberta
Another must try on my list ,can’t wait to visit amazing Taiwan
This is like the best KFC review I’ve ever watched. You go girl!
Oh wow I have never tried Portuguese egg tarts before, those look amazing I need to try one. you're so lucky to have them at your KFC
I have been to Taiwan a couple of times and was always hitting the street food. The next time I'll be there, I will definitely try to eat at KFC for the egg tart. This was a very enlightening video.
The Portuguese egg tarts look tastier, I think. I loved the bit at the end with the different egg tart songs, and you singing in Taiwanese (?) was so adorable!
Love it... missing Taipei & Taiwan from Vancouver
Both are good and taste great in its own way.
Saw you on my boy Sonny's channel and was curious to see your content. Really informative and still a great, entertaining host. Subbed!
@choco butternut Hey glad I'm not the only one. I've been binge watching for 3 days now after I saw her on BEFRS. Safety and blessings to you and yours!
Hahaha, I like your enthusiasm. Very different from other food vloggers * subbed *
I've became obsessed with your channel lately!!
Love your insouciance. You share your joy. Thank you.
❤️ Fried Chicken & Egg Tarts.
Perfect combo!
i like the way you present your videos girl...you are very articulate and very funny! Love ya!
Hi from Portugal. You are lovely and funny. Kevin and your channel too. I hope KFC finally sponsors you :) Good to know they sell our Portuguese tarts there.
You have the best food vlogs! Never cease to make us hungry!! Keep it up girl!
You should come to the UK. The English egg tarts are different and just as nice. The Chinese egg tarts here are also like a hybrid of the two types you covered...flaky pastry but not as flaky as Portuguese egg tarts. 🥚
Those tarts are the only ones I am to get here, wish I could try another kind of egg tarts, they are great though!!
Thanks for the history lesson! You earned my like and subscribe because of it~ XD Just kidding, you are adorable and I love your videos :D I love all egg tarts and especially love KFC original egg tarts
Oh no...you are killing me here...I am heading to Taipei for couple of days on Monday.
You bet that I will be replay my own KFC's egg tarts madness !!! hahaha
I LOVEEE the EGG TART its so delicious thanks TJ love it so much hope you back soon in the PHILIPPINES ...
Time check 10pm in PH
i want tart right now!!!
😫😫😫
Ha i asked a question about this and you did a whole video on it last year haha! Fascinating stuff love some history thanks for the vid!
I Like Pastéis de nata, we eat Portuguese egg's tarts a lot in France for breackfast & lunch ! They were the ones they imported when Leah French Revolution History under Napoleon Bonaparte. The French-Portuguese community was part of one of the most important!
Had egg tart for the first time , when i was in Hong Kong and they are sooooo good. I could easily get addicted to them.
So informative, this was great TJ! :) Loooove the egg tarts! Nommm
Please be my teacher omg class would never be boring but then again you'd probably end up talking about food and it would be perfect ❤️😂
Massive cravings for kfc now and YOU ARE JUST ADORABLE
My favorite of you it's 7:24, you've killed it. I wish you on KFC commercial.
Lol. So funny how you repeatedly clicked the kitchen tongs HAHAHA
This girl LOVES to eat!! I could hang out with her! You are TOO COOL, TJ!! 💐

this makes me sooo homesick
More history lessons please!
Just discovered your channel! I love your personality and your love for food. :) cheers
Sadly we don't have those in the Philippines' KFCs. I like your Taiwanese version of the egg tart song.
Loving it(and you) as always!!
Love you back~
Great history lesson.
I miss the egg tarts of KFC Taiwan so yummy
I also like the crust of HK egg tarts; the flakiness is somewhere in-between the Taiwanese and the Portuguese.
You got me when I saw egg tart! Yum! Thanks for the "history" lesson going "way back" to the 1980's. Yeah, I feel old now :)
I just subscribed to you, and looking forward to seeing what else you can find to eat!
Can always hear Kelsey when you say KFC😂
Good that I did not watch it last night, otherwise i would have felt starving lol
I came here and subscribed to your channel... LOVE your work you are the tiny little version of Sonny Side or he is the tall guy with eyebrows and is like your channel, either way, I love all the content from you both :)
i have to learn more from your videos. its really nice video!
At 08:00 What street is that bakery on? Thanks. :) Going to Taipei and would like to try out places highlighted from my fav Vloggers.
i love this - awesome channel
omg I completely forgot there were different types of egg tarts. this entire time I thought the Portuguese kinds were the Asian/Chinese kind because they were all I had growing up lol. I LOVE the Portuguese kinds and it's always a celebration whenever I have the opportunity to have them :D
Aww man. I was hoping for a huge princess burp after the Pepsi!
Learned more about history from this video than I did from 14 years in the public school system.
LOL I learned so much while I was filming this with TJ too! She would be a great history teacher! LOL
Zeitgeist seriously I hope your kidding. That was not even anything. School teach more but I know your kidding
Love your videos.
Greetings from suriname i like your videos😍😍😍

Another great video fam, I get so jealous of these food vlogs 😂

I like both :) but lean towards to the Portuguese egg tart. Not as easy to find currently during lockdown where I am.
woah is this history for real ? no wonder the tart taste good
Oh, damn I'm early 🤗😍 great vlogs as always!!!
EARLY BIRD GETS ALL THE EGG TARTS
snack is my favorite...
Portuguese tarte for sure. Chinese tarte is sooo eggy. Like almost an omelette lol 😂.
The white guy with the bandana brought me here. So, here I am!
Inspiration ❤️
Uuu i like egg tart so much yummy that make me hungry
The egg tart songs are hilarious and you're so cute as usual 😍. ❤ from singapore
sooo sweet! I generally prefer the old school egg tarts
When I watch people eat something and I am hungry you know how they put the food on the camera like want some here you go sometimes I have to admit I open my mouth
Saw you on, Best Ever Food Review. It was really entertaining to watch you and Sonny😅
If I could only get even a fraction of her energy everyday, my life would be so much better (or at least what she's smoking)
I love your videos
I was craving egg tarts and you posted this!
wow you look great with glasses
such a singer
That was funny.....the opening sounded like a Disney movie .. :)
Great history lesson! The different genre egg tart songs at the end was so funny! And dude, you know you're in Taiwan, land of boba, when your soda cup is impulse sealed! How does that even work? Paper doesn't melt like plastic does? I'm curious on that if you could explain.
I ate those in Portugal, they where tasty 😁
hey gurl, lemme holla at youuuuuuuuu recipe! hahaha
OMG i think I’m in love with TJ ❤️
Sonny brought me here and subscribed instantly
I personally like the classic egg tarts instead of the Portuguese version, but I like the flaky crust instead of the hard cookie crust kind....
Though I try to avoid KFC and Mc Donalds in other countries if i can and only eat the local delicacies instead but KFC in Taiwan is something special egg tart and rice on the side. I remember trying KFC in Kaohsiung while i was in Taiwan for almost a month in 2017. When I got back to New Zealand a few weeks after and had KFC here i was hoping for an egg tart or a cup of rice but I realized i'm in New Zealand now. Disappointed. Love and miss Taiwan!
i love the Portuguese egg tarts one of my favourite desserts while in Asia
you deserve more subscribers and views hands down
In Canada we call them quiches or small quiches
Quiches use cheese and are salty
KFC Vietnam got those yummy egg tarts as well.
Ha ha love the sound effects! 😁
