    After watching dozens of whetstone and knife sharpening videos, I've finally found a much needed related source of information.
    I've been wondering about the proper use of flattening stones for quite sometime now...

    No lapping with loose abrasives on a flat plate, that is my favorite way to dress stones. The abrasive works totally different than if it were bonded, and I think leaves a better surface on your stones.
    A word of note, when dressing stones on diamond plates you should keep the mud washed off while using them. That abrasive mud will wear the bond away which is the main mode of wear on them.

      Good points all around. Loose abrasives are a great alternative. If you're using flattening stones or lapping plates, we'd certainly recommend using a lot of water. Personally, I like to flatten under running water.

    i think another big difference is that you can use some plates to sharpen your knives also. then again i guess a person could maybe sharpen on a flattening stone as well

      Good point! The continuous surface of the Dia-Flat plates makes it easy to use them as sharpeners.

    If you don't want to pony up the big bucks, you can put some drywall screen on any flat surface such as a tile or thick glass and you're good to go

    • @SharpeningSupplies
      @SharpeningSupplies  Před 6 měsíci

      Drywall screen, or some sort of abrasive paper, on a flat surface will flatten a stone but it has a few downsides. The surface left on your sharpening stones can be quite rough with drywall screen, it can leave fairly deep scratches. You can work around this, just a heads up. You'll also need to replace your abrasive fairly regularly. It would be interesting to do a cost comparison of the cost-per-use of drywall screen vs a lapping plate or flattening stone. Thanks for the comment!

    Silicone carbide flattening stones will also need to be flattened after some use, if you buy one of these and do not also purchase a diamond flattening plate, you will eventually no longer have a flat stone. The DiaFlat is inspected to be better than 0.0005" and will stay that way through its useful life. Yes, it is expensive... buy once.

    How would i prevent the diamond lapping plates from clogging with the particles from flattening the whetstone. I am under the impression you shouldnt wet them with water. Thanks im advance!

    I thought the ATOMA Diamond Plates are for sharpening only? Can you really use them to flatten waterstones as well?
    I tried out and must say. Yes they do flatten the stones but after flattening just a few of them they already lost their diamonds around the edges. So NO don't use ATOMA Plates for flattening! But what's the the actual difference between ATOMA sharpening plates and the Dia flat for example as both seem to have a thin layer of diamonds clued on to a flat metall surface?

    Does the grit of the flattening stone have different effects for the whetstone? Besides material take off time? Also does using a flattening stone change the grit of the whetstone?

    • @SharpeningSupplies
      @SharpeningSupplies  Před rokem

      A finer grit flattening stone will leave a nicer surface on your finer grit water stones. A flattening stone will not change the grit of a whetstone. You want to make sure you give your stones a good rinse after flattening to remove any larger abrasives that might have transferred over from the flattening stone to the surface of your sharpening stone.

    I used the Trend 300 on a Chosera 400/800/2000 set and found the Choseras were all twinkling with tiny diamonds at the end. I used the Choseras face down to reduce "pickup" on the whetstone. Scrubbing the whetstones under running water on completion did not remove all the diamond. It took about 45 minutes of sharpening on each stone to get rid of the diamonds and restore the original feel, particularly on the 400. Flattening was v. fast.
    I regard sharpening as a frequent and necessary chore rather than an art form in itself and am looking for a fast, effective and the cheapest means of achieving this. If I invest in a Shapton diamond plate am I likely to have the same experience as described above? I can't see how the issues of concaving the flattening stones or diamond transfer can be avoided, any ideas?. Thanks for your post.

    • @SharpeningSupplies
      @SharpeningSupplies  Před rokem +3

      I don't have any experience with Trend diamond stones, but I've used the Shapton diamond plate extensively and haven't had issues with diamonds dislodging from the plate and embedding in my stones.
      The new DMT lapping plates are less expensive than the Shapton, and the Hardcoat tech they use to bond diamonds on their lapping plates is very durable. Our sharpening specialist Dan is a big fan of the DMT lapping plates: www.sharpeningsupplies.com/DMT-Dia-Flat-95-Plus-Lapping-Plate-P2042C111.aspx

      @@SharpeningSupplies Thanks for your prompt reply. I guess it's a case of getting what you pay for but the price of the Shapton plate is eye-watering for a humble soul like me. I've read that all the latest diamond plates use mono-crystalline dust deeply embedded in a hard nickel base. It must be that some plates just have better quality control than others.
      I'll get over the disappointment with the Trend plate before making a decision on the next plate. I can at least strop my way out of trouble for now. Thanks again for your knowledge and advice.

    Hello guys. I purchased 3 kuromaku stones and the double time flattening plate. I love it but have had an issue since new. Some insight would be great. The coarse side of the flattening stone has no resistance and wont take off material. The fine side works perfectly. I always soak the stone for 10 minutes before use

    can i just use my dmt course diamond plate to lap my shapton ceramic stones?

    • @SharpeningSupplies
      @SharpeningSupplies  Před rokem

      You sure can. DMT coarse is about 325 grit. The DMT lapping plate is 120 grit, so it'll cut a little faster. Depending on what diamond plate you have, the lapping plates and flatting stones might be larger, which makes flattening a little easier.

    • @SharpeningSupplies
      @SharpeningSupplies  Před 10 měsíci

      The Dia-Flat is larger and coarser than the Shapton, so it will flatten your stones faster. However, the Shapton will leave a smoother surface on your water stones. Both are great lapping plates.
