- We recently received the Stihl FSA 86 R brushcutter and trimmer for review and we put it to the test across our smallholding/homestead. We started off with some simple edging jobs and then tackled the overgrown pathway leading down to the compost heap.
The strimmer is battery operated and has a cutting circle diameter 350mm (35cm). Watch the video to see the trimmer in action and to get our honest verdict.

Nice review. Neighbour was having problems with theirs, we found that they had pushed the battery in until it clicked, but it needed to click twice to engage with the battery terminals. She's very happy with it too 🙂
Have you thought about a scythe for the open bits of wild garden? Due to allergies I have to add a respirator to my PPE collection when using petrol strimmer, none of that is needed for a scythe, but it does take training and a bit of practice, also keeping pets out the way (but that would apply even more so to the strimmer too).

Good video, and looks like a good strimmer. could I ask a very silly Question ? What direction does the strimmer head turn, its either Clockwise or anticlockwise. The reason I ask is because i cant quite see from the video.
I have been using a petrol FS 86 for over 20 years and the head turns anticlockwise, which is very handy as the strap holds the machine on my right hand side and if you then proceed round a lawn strimming the edges walking anticlockwise, because the head is turning anticlockwise it throws all the cut grass back onto the lawn, So when you then mow, the mower then picks the cut grass up. Simple.
My FS 86 weighs a horrid 7.5kg with a full tank of petrol, and its killing my back and shoulders,
So am looking for a new lighter one with no petrol fumes either.

Strimmer today. While strimming, the head turns clockwise. Hope that helps.
@@MyHomeFarm Hello , Many thanks indeed for the information. I had a feeling that the head turned clockwise, which is the opposite to what what my FS 86 does. I will think About what to do as regards a new strimmer, as very reluctant to change from what I have. But Things move on and I guess I could get used to it. Also not keen on the autofeed head on the cordless strimmers, Mine has the universal manual feed head which is very reliable, although it takes a little time to reload with cord, and a few seconds to stop strimming and let more line out by hand.

I've decided to buy one fsa 86r, question is whether to get the ap 200 or the ap 300 battery.
Have read that Stihl "recommend" the ap 200 but have no idea why.
My garden is similar to yours in size and weed, so my first guess is to get the ap 300.
What do you think?

Thanks for the feedback and glad you liked the review. Strimmers are not overly power hungry, but I often run out of battery on the 200; we do, however, have other strimmers with loads of batteries so it doesn’t bother me in that sense.
So if your budget allows, I’d go 300 so that you finish your jobs in one session.

Ego has a trimmer with an adjustable shaft for shorter people.
