Guide to AKUREYRI + Going to the Christmas House and the OLDEST Church in Iceland

  • Unlike most mornings, we didn't take off in the car at the sign of daybreak. We took it slow and spent our time discovering Akureyri. Akureyri is the 2nd largest town in Iceland, but you wouldn't think it because everything is so relaxed!
    We started off at a coffee shop named Blaa Kannan in a very blue iconic building. Then, we just strolled around downtown to see the Akureyri Church, artwork, and other views.
    Since it was too early for some places to be open yet, we went on a little excursion to the Christmas House. It's only a 15-minute drive from Akureyri. If you love Christmas, you'll love the Christmas House no matter the time of the year. We know we really enjoyed it and can only imagine how awesome it would be to go there around Christmas.
    After we killed some time, we went thrift shopping in Akureyri to try and find some Icelandic wool sweaters. We both found one for ourselves for around $30 a piece! We also found some other interesting pieces we decided to take back as souvenirs.
    Then it came to our favorite time of the day... lunch! We got some fish and chips and chicken and chips from Moe's Food Truck back in downtown of Akureyri. It was very tasty!
    After we had some fuel, we went to the site of the oldest church in Iceland dating back to the 17th century. It has the iconic green turf roof and is in a beautifully serene location in the Icelandic countryside.
    Last stop of the day was supposed to be a hidden hot spring called Fosslaug... but. it wasn't so hidden. There were a lot of people there waiting their turn to take a dip, so we didn't get in it. It wasn't all for nothing though! We got to see an incredible waterfall named Reykjafoss.
    Our Airbnb for the evening was definitely off the beaten path, about 20 minutes back a gravel road, but so worth it! There were sheep, dogs, and a dome house! What more could you need? Since it was so out in the country, we were hoping we would catch the Northern Lights. Sadly, that didn't happen but maybe next time!

    What time of the year did you guys visit Akureyri? We’re planning our trip in mid September, we’re just curious about the amount of sunlight.

      That’s exactly the time of year we went! Hours of sunlight are pretty much like a typical day, getting dark around 7PM Highly recommend going then!

    Wow! you guys did so much. I think that will be a problem with us. We have so many things planned in our itinerary haha was there many sites where you had to walk a long way or was most pretty close to parking?

    • @MattandRachelTravel
      @MattandRachelTravel  Před 3 měsíci

      There’s always so much to do with so little time. We get a little ambitious and try to fit in as much as we can which may not be the best thing, so don’t follow our example. Haha
      We found most major attractions were close walking distance from parking! When are you planning to go to Iceland?

      @@MattandRachelTravel haha very soon! We call our vacations “the amazing race” like the show. We are always trying to see to much. In greece we missed out on the marketplace and either of the kostas. And some other places. Life is short I guess we just want to hustle.

      @@MattandRachelTravel we are excited. The anticipation is to much. There is a chance we miss out on the blue lagoon but amy booked us at most of the others around the country. Depends if there is another eruption.

      We were surprised to find a set of stairs in the Airbnb because we thought it was all one level when we booked it. It was a nice little discovery. Glad we could provide a little entertainment and thanks for watching!
