The Sleepy Towns of North Iceland 🇮🇸 | Akureyri, Siglufjordur and Olafsfjordur

  • In Episode 2 of our Iceland Ring Road Trip we head to the fishing towns of Siglufjordur, Olafsfjordur and Akureyri in North Iceland. Although Akureyri is the better known city, we wanted to start by exploring the more underrated side of North Iceland, i.e. the sleepy fishing towns of Siglufjordur and Olafsfjordur.
    These towns of the Herring-boom renown are now sleepy little villages with the most charming buildings set against a snow covered landscape, nestled in the fjords. The mostly unsung and highly underrated beauty of the stunning drives across the quiet farms and spectacular cliff drops in North Iceland would be enough to send anyone reeling. A part of the Trolls peninsula, Siglufjordur has the most darling homes & restaurants done up in bright pop colours, while the homes of Olafsfjordur are done up with troll graffiti versions of their occupants. The town of Akureyri, also known as the capital of North Iceland is just as delightful, what with its large ice cream store and many buildings of the yore, well-preserved and mindfully curated.
    Suffice to say, North Iceland, devoid of too many tourists, is a must visit on the Iceland Ring Road Trip itinerary.
    Have a Good Day Everyone!!
    ----- ABOUT US -----
    Hi! We are Pooja & Shravan, an illustrator-engineer duo from Bangalore brought together by the love of travel and adventure.
    We have traveled together since the winter of 2016. On one such trip, we started documenting these travels on a humble phone camera. We soon realised that we really enjoy capturing these experiences. We are entirely self taught (students of the internet) and have learnt from binging on brilliant creators over the years.
    In our videos you might find glimpses of places that are not spoken about enough. We always vouch for spots that are somewhat the underdogs. Our vlogs are sometimes vlog-ish and sometimes a documentation of the place as we see it. We hope that watching these videos will bring a little dose of joy to your day.
    We love reading your comments and hearing your thoughts.
    They motivate us and help us steer our creative path.
    With love,

    We are also planning to visit Siglufjordur but not as a night-halt but on the way from Akureyri to Westfjords. So, we will have limited time in the town. If you really need to pick one or two places/points of interest in that town, what would those be?

    • @PoojaShravan
      @PoojaShravan  Před rokem

      Hi SK…. Both singlu and olafs are extremely small towns…. They have few museums that you could visit but if you would ask us, taking 1 or 2 hour walk though the these towns or maybe hitting one of the view points in each of these towns and spending an hour there would be the best. The other way of doing it would be to just stay 2 to 3 nights in one of these towns absolutely doing nothing, Just to take in the north Icelandic vibes. We would recommend you to leave Akureyri very early, enjoy the drive (it’s amongst the best drives in Iceland) take two small breaks in each of these towns… try a cafe in singlu and head towards the west fjords. The key being “ leave Akureyri early”. Happy travels 😄😄

      @@PoojaShravan Thanks! A leisurely walk through the town seems right. Have two nights at Akureyri and trying to finalize the plan for those 2 days. Will keep this as an option.

    Hello Pooja and Shravan, Thanks for posting this video its really beautiful. Actually I am looking some information about the road conditions especially hwy 76 , 82 and 744. Looks like you guys did ring road circle trip clockwise. I am planning to visit Iceland in July with my family and we have planning to visit these northern beautiful towns, I heard its very scenic and after looking at this video its definitely worth visiting. How are the road conditions? I have booked regular sedan do you think I will need bigger car or 4x4 ? We are planning to do ring road trip anti clockwise. Did you visit Husavik?
    Thanks again.

    • @PoojaShravan
      @PoojaShravan  Před 2 lety

      Hi Suhas.. Thanks for watching the video.. we are glad that you enjoyed it . 😄😄
      So you can take roads 76 and 82 with a regular 2WD, no issues. (On Google maps in satellite view, the yellow roads are the ones which are paved and well kept, because they get used a lot). Road 744 looks like an interior road though and we’re not exactly sure about the road condition because we didn’t take this one. Is there a specific reason you want to take this road?
      Any destination on the ring road itinerary can be easily done with a sedan. If you do plan on taking a 4x4 though, even though it’s heavy on the pockets, summer is the best time to do it and it also opens up some of the gorgeous highland roads (F roads) for you. Have a brilliant trip!:)
      Oh and we did go to Husavik, we have a video coming up soon! (Within the next 2 weeks)😄

    • @pokhya
      @pokhya Před 2 lety

      @@PoojaShravan Thank you very much for the quick reply. was thinking about upgrading car but now will stick with sedan only which is a 2WD.👍 As per our plan, we will start from Akureyri up north on 82 ->76->744 to Skagaströnd town and then 74 back to ring road. We will be there for 11 day (10 nights) so planning to explore few small remote towns. 😊
      BTW I didn't see much drone footage in this video or did I miss ?😉. I am also planning to take drone with me but not the camera (My family strike down my SLR camera idea, per them phones are good enough)😒. Mavic Air 2s is really good but did this drone stayed stable in wind(gust) and rain ?.
      Two weeks for other video will be too late for us.😢 Thanks again.

    • @PoojaShravan
      @PoojaShravan  Před 2 lety +1

      @@pokhya we did take a lot of drone shots… but we are using just enough to tell the story ☺️☺️We plan to upload a drone montage for all of iceland next month though.
      We use mavic air 2s as well. We did have issue with winds in most of the places… it kept giving us wind warnings but we just went ahead and flew it… just make sure that you return home at 30% battery.
      Some places, like akureyri, are no fly zones… just keep that in mind
