Really don't like how everyone's saying Maggie's at fault for 'abandoning' her mother. She went to school. Her mother didn't accept her for who she is, said she should be like her brother. That's pretty toxic stuff, I would have walked away for a while too. Why is no one mentioning that Maggie didn't listen to that voice mail cause it started with "it's mom, ugh I don't know why you always do this!" That doesn't sound very nice to me. Why is no one mentioning that the brother could have stepped in and said something like "hey! Mom really misses you, let's listen to that whole voice mail together, give her another chance" but nothing. Why is all the responsibility to mend the relationship with her mother on Maggie?! The full saying of 'blood is thicker than water' is "the blood of the convent/battle field is stronger than the water of the womb" family don't get special privileges to be toxic in your life.

Very well said. I found the part where they all said "should somebody find Gabe?" so judgemental and disapproving and it made me sick to my stomach. Like who are these people to come and act like that? Sure she might not have been around but like there is always many sides to a story and they placed themselves higher in the family realm than the actual family realm.

The brother acting as if she weren't allowed in her own mothers room really chapped my a$$. Morally speaking that was just as much her mom and depending on the will etc. she has the right legally as well! Just because he took care of her while sick doesn't give him the right to dictate what his sister is allowed to do

The estranged daughter of a woman comes back home to bury her mother. Throughout this short, we see how red evokes a certain reaction in Maggie because her last conversation with her mother she had been wearing red. The red basket on the kitchen counter, the red blood of the dead bird, Gabe's red pocket square, the red bowl which Maggie puts her pasta salad (she eventually drops it), closet with red clothing items and Maggie's name on her childhood sketch . I feel that Maggie is haunted not by her mother's ghost but by her actions; she eventually listens to her mothers voice mail which could mean that she finally absolves herself for the way she treated her mother.

I do agree. Why no one is talking about how poorly her mother treated her. More than likely yes it was her mother's favorite color but from how she reacts to the color is also a trigger color. It also seems like for the "family" the golden child was her brother and she was the black sheep in the family dynamic.

    This hits home.
I have a broken relationship with my mother and I can relate to Maggie. I think many victims of abusive and narcissistic parents can too.
At times, Maggie wonders if her mother was really a bad person after all and, now that her mother's passed, Maggie feels guilty for leaving her. However, the things that her mother has said and done still haunt Maggie. Maggie's brother is a constant reminder of their relationship, as he appears to behave exactly like mom.
It's hard to accept that parents can be monsters, but I think Maggie did accept it in the end and now she won't be haunted by her mother's wrongdoings anymore.

Damn this really spoke to me..My mom was my absolute best friend and even 8yrs after her death I still am haunted by the guilt, even for the tiniest of things..
Before her operation she wanted me to snuggle in bed with her "one last night". I said oh don't be so negative, we have plenty of chances after you recover. That night I accidentally fell asleep on the couch.😔
I should've gotten up early and rode with her to the hospital but I hit the snooze button instead. By the time I got to the hospital she was headed into surgery and I only had time for a quick hug & I love you. That was the last time I would embrace the person I loved more than anyone in the world. The look of fear and desperation on her face has been seared into my memory. After she died the guilt I had about not taking things seriously ate me alive.. still does. What I would give to go back and redo that last 24hrs. I ALWAYS tell people to talk to their loved ones as if it's the last time. 🖤

@@maroonforsyth7011 I'm so sorry to hear about your loss as well. I think it's common for survivors to feel guilt in one way or another. My situation was kinda the opposite, she chose to do the risky surgery to get it early and it ultimately killed her.... whereas had she done chemo instead or even nothing at all, I could've had years left with her. She asked and I didn't tell her how I felt about it because she seemed so sure, even though inside I HATED the idea. I knew it was too risky. I should've said something... and I should've stayed up with her that night and rode with her to her operation appointment. Spent the last few minutes I could with her. But I didn't.. and I feel so guilty about all of the things I didn't say or do. I thought I had more time. Hindsight is a b*tch.
Your story honestly makes me feel less alone in my worries, so thank you for sharing. At the end of the day our moms made their own choices and who's to say they would've listened to us anyway? I try to stay somewhat positive because I know she wouldn't want me beating myself up over it, but damn is it hard.. I hope you are able to find peace and healing in your journey through this life❤
oh & thank you for the cathartic little therapy sesh. Lol

I feel this pain if I see something from my dead father like pictures of him and his old items. The second part of the pain is that she felt a little guilt because she never called back and their last conversation was a fight. Sometimes we fail to show how important they are when we should have.
Let's all show how we love them by saying I Love You and telling them how
Truly blessed we are to have them in our lives.
I want you to do that.

yeah i hope people get that she has nothing to feel guilty about and that's kind of the whole point of the ending. that last act of manipulation almost made her accept that she is who her mother makes her out to be but remembering what she said when she walked away reveals that there's actually nothing to take responsibility for behind that guilt she was made to feel. she's still able to empathize with her mother and feel sad for her without feeling sad the way her mother wanted her to. she likely just started mourning her mother the way she was before she perceived her as "already dead"

Such a simple but very moving short. I often wonder why some parents or other family members, (but especially some parents & their child or children), have such a hard time Connecting ...until it's Too Late. I have always had a very loving yet odd dynamic with my mom; and although I visit & talk to her on the phone 1-2X each month or two, I have to (mostly) love her from a distance for my own mental emotional & physical well-being. I would say though, that I had this sort of strained & painful nearly nonexistent relationship with my late father and after his death I felt no guilt but little things happened like me getting a whif of cologne he used to wear on my way to work, or I look in the mirror (and I'm basically his twin) so it would affect me in SOME weird way.
So for me, this wasn't difficult to watch & process BUT it made me feel some type of way. I wonder WHY this daughter felt the way she did about her Mother so I'm not necessarily feeling that she may have been wrong but I do feel that she needs to Forgive HERSELF. When she said that she & her mom could barely talk when she WAS living and it was like she was Already Dead I felt that because when my dad WAS alive I made him almost Invisible to me and we didn't talk even before he passed because he was a dangerously TOXIC, ABUSIVE human being. Yet my mom told me 2 decades after he passed how he told her how much he loved us before he died. And that he used to keep some of my report cards str8 A's and was so proud. Which, I always felt he could care less about me. Some of these shorts really hit close to home for me and for others such as THIS 1. Thanks for creating Content which causes us to empathize, reflect, think...and, for some of us: Be able to Relate To.

I know exactly how you feel about your father. My dad died this past February and had been sick for years after decades of alcoholism and drug use. He was never there for me and abusive as well to me and my mother. We spoke once every few weeks but he never made an effort to see me growing up or his grandkids later in life. After he died I had the daunting task of cleaning out his house. There I found pictures and cards all around the house that I had given him over the years. Even drawings my kids had made on his nightstand. Hit me like a ton of bricks. He never made it seem like he cared, but I guess in his own weird way he did love us. I've had a hard time processing the guilt of not being grief-stricken when he passed. It didn't feel like anything had changed aside from missing the random monthly phone call.
      Anyway I'll stop rambling 😅
I'm sorry for your loss and thank you for sharing your experience. Makes me feel like I'm not so alone in my thoughts. 🖤

One thing I've learn before and even watching this short film is.. children can move away and live a life of their own... but at least visit your parents despite the fact that you get along with them or not.. check up on your family... or your conscience will eat you up if you have one..
