Diana is a very very rare contralto which is the lowest form of the female singing type but she has a extended range and also has ability to sing with polyphonic overtone which is what gives her her unique one-of-a-kind sound. Diana has a very rare voice. She is a contralto and she is also polyphonic, which means she can produce several tones at the same time.
Diana's background: Diana was born on May 31, 2003 in the Far East of Russia. She was severely abused as a small child and abandoned on the street by her birth mother in winter when she was only 3 years old with a broken collarbone. She was then taken to an orphanage where, after more than one year, she was adopted by Irina Ponik, a massage therapist. At the age of four and a half, Diana still could not speak properly. She also stuttered. Experts recommended that she take singing lessons to improve her general speaking and vocal skills.
This is a new TV show in Russia. There are 9 weeks with 9 shows and 9 well known artists. Diana is the youngest artist. They had to sing songs from 9 genres. The last TV show was on 20. November 2021. The 9 artists are also the judges for the other singer. And Diana (18 yo) won the overall competition of which Diana won 4 and took 2nd place once. She shocked the other singers with the first song. The Crow was her masterpiece in this competition, in my opinion. The judge who stands up is the great opera singer Yusif Eyvazov and the husband of Anna Netrebko, who is world famous. He's very impressed.

At the age of three in the middle of Russia's far northern Winter she was abandoned, injured, at a bus stop where she was rescued and sent to an orphanage. At the age of 5 she was still traumatized and unable to speak properly. A massage therapist who visited the orphanage trying to help kids, was the first to recognize something special in this little girl, and eventually adopted her. Diana was sent for singing lessons because it was thought that this might help her learn to speak without impediment. Shilow, Welcome to the extraordinary voice of one Diana Ankudinova! For those that don’t know, Diana Ankudinova was only 18 years old when this performance took place during the 2021 season of a Russian vocal competition called the "ShowMaskGoOn!". Diana’s cover of this Elvis Presley classic "Can't Help Falling In Love", shows Diana Ankudinova has a true contralto sound, and for those that don’t know female voice types, a contralto is the lowest kind of female voice, and a true contralto is very, very rare.
First, let me answer a very common question asked about Diana's vocal range. At 14 in 2017, her vocal range was measured from a low of D3 to a high of A5. As of September 2021, 4 years later at age 18, her lower functional range was measured at C3, and her upper range measured at B♭5. But, it's not just how low she can go, it's the exceptional quality of her tone in her lower range. It's all about the roundness, the fullness, and the depth of her voice, along with her ability to access an enormous amount of resonance that further defines Diana as a "dramatic contralto", which is the rarest of the rare contralto voice types.
How does Diana Ankudinova do it? How can such a young female singer reach such a low, rich, deep sound? Without actually scoping her vocal tract, the general conciseness of many vocal professionals attributes Diana’s sound to the unique vocal anatomy she was born with which is unique and specific to her. Diana’s vocal folds appear to be longer than most other female singers and they also appear to be thicker than most other female singers. Her larynx also appears to be bigger and her vocal track similarly appears to be longer than most other female singers. It’s this anatomy that gives her the ability to produce these low, deep, rich, and full sounds, but without actually scoping Diana’s vocal track there is no way to be sure. To really appreciate the vocal progression of Diana Ankudinova’s contralto sound, first, listen to "Rechenka", a Russian folk song she sings in Russian for a vocal competition called "You Are Super!", during their 2018 Season when Diana was only 14 years old. Next listen to her cover of Chris Izaak's, "Wicked Game" the following year when she was only 15 years old during the 2019 Season of "You Are Super!". Diana Ankudinova won both the 2018 and 2019 seasons of “You Are Super”. Now listen once again to "Can't Help Falling In Love" and you can actually hear and follow her vocal progression.
Diana is also a true polyphonic singer which is an extraordinarily rare accomplishment for someone so young. A singer who has mastered this vocal technique can create up to two, and sometimes three different tones at the same time which adds to the harmonic overtones and undertones that can make it sound like more than one voice singing because this is what a polyphonic singer can do. This polyphonic sound is why some people mistakenly believe Diana Ankudinova is using auto-tune, a voice synthesizer, pitch correction software, or some other artificial form of electronic voice manipulation to alter or adjust her sound. Others think another person is singing off stage in the background, or she is lip-syncing over a previously recorded vocal track. There is no artificial manipulation of Diana's voice of any kind going on at all. This is a very prestigious vocal competition and Diana Ankudinova is required to use only the equipment provided for her as are all other competitors are required to do. There was no opportunity for her to bring in, let alone set up, calibrate and test any extra electronic vocal manipulating equipment. What you are hearing is all Diana Ankudinova.
Female singers usually don't reach their full vocal maturity until somewhere around 24 to 28 years of age; some reach it a little sooner, others, a little later. I am thinking Diana Ankudinova is already well ahead of schedule in reaching her vocal maturity. I look forward to what Diana will sound like when she does reach full vocal maturity. When she does she will have had many more years of voice training with her voice teacher in addition to more years honing her on-stage live performance skills. When that day comes, there will be no doubt that Diana Ankudinova will be a vocal force to be reckoned with and a wonder to behold on stage.
Diana took part in the “ ShowMaskGoOn on” vocal competition in September of 2021 where she performed her cover of “Can’t Help Falling In Love”. The judges were a panel of nine professional singers that compete against each other and also award judging points to each other. When Diana is not competing she is a member of this judging panel. During Diana’s performance, the judge on the top row that stands up first is the famous Russian tenor, Yusif Eyvazov from Azerbaijan who is married to the world-famous soprano Anna Netrebko. The blond woman also standing that’s dressed in red and looks totally shocked at the end of Diana's performance, then puts both hands on top of her head with a look of total bewilderment and disbelief is Karina Koks, also a well-known contemporary Russian singer. Karina Koks also knows at some point, she has to compete against Diana Ankudinova and knows she is witnessing a true, once-in-a-generation talent. Finally, Diana won the "ShowMustGoOn" competition.

Here are three reasons why Diana (the Queen of Goosebumps) doesn't sound human. First, she is a contralto, which is the absolute rarest type of female voice. It allows her to sing very dramatic/powerful, very (I mean VERY) deep, very dark, very rich. Second, she has a spectacular larynx. She's been called the vocal Eighth Wonder of the World. Third, she is polyphonic, which means she can produce multiple harmonics within her voice at the same time. This is what allows her to sound like two people at once. (more below) When you add all that up you basically get a person who creates her own auto-tune. She doesn't need electronic auto-tune. She IS her own auto-tune. And the effect when you hear her is totally mind-blowing. It's like she's singing right through you, like a sword straight into your soul. Literally NOBODY else on the planet has a voice like hers. She's not one in a million, she's one in seven billion.

Dimash is great, but in my book, Diana takes No. 1place. No disrespect to Dimash, but he is too technical, Diana is much more human, suprehuman, actually, and she is overall a more complete performer. Not just her vocal abilities, but her stage presence, her connection, bodylanguage, facial expression............ And to be able to do this at her age, insane! BTW, they would make an interesting duo.
