Thats crazy they are getting away with a subscription service on a large door opener.
I mean at least let people know before buying it...
Actually, he kind of dramatized it. Chamberlain uses MyQ and the MyQ app for Smartphone control, which is completely free. If you want it to work with a few apps such as Xfinity Home (which is free) you would have to pay a subscription. Chamberlain doesn’t even advertise that it works with these apps. Most apps that it works with are free.
Mr. Tattoo ASMR that’s crazy that this guy is spewing BS out of his mouth. He’s making everyone think that there’s a subscription to control it with your phone. Not true
I have a chamberlain garage door opener with MyQ. The wifi gateway came with it. No subscription here.
His garage door opener is so old that MyQ wasn't there and isn't available for his garage
I think it meant the company pays a subscription for ifttt which is an easier way to link devices over the Internet" but its not charged to the customer. I think it might be because anything used by a company has to be licensed. Like notice media software has business and personal licenses. And some have said this license is for home use only. I've also heard of a broadcasting license. So it could just be some kind of legal reason.

they already have survived for more than 2 years
Ewelink is big.
I agree with mastavagasa even though these parts cost like $90 the single chamberlain garage door opener will be over $100 plus monthly fee. Also adding in a relay is so much better aside then replacing the whole drive motor and possibly the chain. Unless those units were on their way out, I would keep them, new openers have way too many plastic gears (probably for safety) I had one that stripped itself because it kept going after it was fully open for no reason, I had to pull the plug. The main gear was stripped (it was only plastic gear in there) and even though I could pull it out, I contacted the company and was quoted “no serviceable parts inside drive unit” and couldn’t find the gear anywhere online. So it was junked 🙁
Does it classify as a sleeper door?
Ha ha I guess Lol
"NO" I think should mean "Normally open", and "NC" should mean normally closed.
lmfao it literally means normally closed (circuit is closed aka live) normally open (circuit is not engaged aka not live) this is dumbed down bc eve if the circuit is open the power going would stil be live.
@@KaeBears if the circuit is NO normally open then neither of the two are live because live is cut off at the switch and y do you think power can go when the switch is open
Yes no is normally open (circuit not connected at rest *no power*), and nc is normally closed (circuit connected at rest *no power*) c is common, think pc power switch it's a no circuit when you press the button it closes the contacts and turns on the pc. In this case you connect 2 wires between c and no, the relays then switch it to closed to close/open the garage door.
I did this a while ago by modding a remote to connect to the board. It's now sitting in a static bag on the outlet box with an ac adapter coming out to plug in the wall outlet. No connection to the door opener itself. FYI, if you have a opener that uses rolling codes and not a wall switch like the ones he has it won't work, you have to do it like the way I did because the pcb units only connect wires together not broadcast rolling codes to open/close the door. There's another video where a guy did this exact thing with his front gate to his house, that's how I did mine.
It's only a buck a month. For now. What happens when they start having financial issues and raise the cost to 10 bucks a month? Or when they go bankrupt and your door opener no longer works?
bought a lowes iris smart switch recently because it was on sale.. app recently informed me they're shutting down the service at the end of march.. but luckily, they're (eventually) sending me a $40 gift card, which is twice what i paid for it
Martin Schou Just so you know, this works just fine without IFTTT.. sure you can tell Alexa to open/close your garage or use location based. However, there is an app and it’s 100% FREE and works over the internet.. So you can open and close the Chamberlain garage door anywhere in the world.
Tho IFTTT would be nice if it wasn’t behind a paywall, it isn’t a huge deal breaker. Plus, I think some people have found ways around it.
Nevermind the fact your bloody garagedoor has to go through two third party services over the internet... Seriously, bluetooth or some other low frequency remote should be fine right?
The number one reason the subscription is total bull is that you pay $1 a month and IT ONLY CLOSES YOUR DOORS.. it doesnt even allow you to open the doors "for security reasons".
This is crap. There are much better alternatives.
Blynk (a very good IoT server and API) is free and open source. You can run it on almost any hardware. Even a $3 esp8266 can run it. This project would cost less than $10 and if Blynk servers were to go down you can always run your own server.

I’m all about the smart home tech, I would love to see more like this! 👍
If you have bought wifi module and uploaded code on it and bought relays (normal ones ) separately then you could have done in or under 10$ and you could even control it using Google Assistant !
Yash Shah this is what I was hoping to see.
Should have used D1 Mini’s along with home assistant
$10. The dollar sign goes before the amount.
u can just link the ewelink to google home and control it with assitant... part of the reason for using this more expensive model is it also has an rf receiver allowing for traditional remote control alongside the new wifi. i have my whole house wired with these and the simpler sonoff basics which ost like 6 bucks each,
The Vaping Alien personally I have replace my light switches with Sonoff T1 US modules which are custom flashed with Tasmota running on home assistant
You should do a series on upgrading your house with tech. Thumbs up If you agree.

I don't get it. What service would they even provide for that 1 dollar a month? I really don't see any need and use for a 3rd party in between me and my garage door.
There is no use there trying to con people by giving them small monthly fees so they can profit and most people won't even notice it because of how small the amount it
IFTTT is a phone app that lets you cause things to happen by other things happening. that probably sounds confusing but for example he would be able to do something like make it so that his garage door opens once his phone connects to his home wifi. Or perhaps make it so that the garage door opens when a certain light is turned on.
As mentioned in the video, normally this ability is included, because the company pays those fees behind the scenes, but in this case they wanted to make their customers pay for it
I'm not paying for ifttt either. I can do ifttt integration for free on my own hardware.
As a professional, you really need to have entrapment sensors on any door that can be operated from offsite. This is super unsafe. This is my full time job.
The leaking is a blown capacitor, should be replaced asap and the fluid is toxic.
Just about to point that out! Good one sir!
isnt the safety sensetivity the failsafe for that? like the opener is supposed to shut down if it senses too much resistance?
im not disagreeing that a beam would be a good idea, im just saying its not like he just has the beam terminals wired together.
@@lightninguitarsolo as old as those ops are I wouldn't trust just the force setting. Plus who knows if it's even set correctly to begin with. Many homeowners just crank it to max without understanding what they're doing.
Also with the force setting set to max and no eyes, you run the risk of a cable coming off one of the drums and having a door hanging side ways basically, because if an obstruction occurred, the opener would continue to close/open. He definitely should have installed the Chamberlain opener. The myq stuff is a perk. He could have even gone with buying a cheaper opener and installing an after market security system which is super easy to install. Plus you get a warranty.
I install the linear switches on openers all the time and the chamberlin openers went all "apple" and made their circuits digital, so they are pretty much the only ones that dont work with them. I'm not a garage door guy, I just work in security so I dont know all the ins and outs of openers so I appreciate the info
Hey Linus, “NC” is normally closed.
On low voltage relays, especially in fire alarm and burglar alarm, you have a common, normally open, and normally closed.
You always use the common, then you use the normally open or normally closed depending on what kind of device you’re hooking up.
Great video! Much better functionality than you had before.
Enjoyed the humor! keep up the good work, Linus!
I like these "ancient" garage openers because they are SO much quieter than newer cheaper ones. The only trouble is if they aren't setup right the gearbox tends to get broke since they are rather cheap plastic. I made a replacement for both if mine on the CNC out of aluminum, but so far only needed one. Definitely worth all my upgrading and work given how nice and quiet they are, and stronger that new ones with twice the rating.
Ive said it once and I'll say it again, your video editing team is absolutely phenomenal and one of the biggest reasons I still watch your videos after 5 years. Y'all deserve a ton of credit.

This is dangerous territory, next thing you know you'll have a raspberry pi running home assistant and you start automating you humidifiers because why not.
Can't remember where but I found out rpi WiFi controlled plugs for like fifteen quid
Exactly how it started for me. OpenGarage, then my humidifier is controllable with a humidity sensor. Just have to remember to refill it.
You could even have a water level sensor that triggers an automated refill.
"They're for when I'm working".... But it is still filled to the top.
I’ve personally used a lot of Sonoff products which utilize EWeLink as the user interface application. I’ve had great success with all of them. I built a reptile habitat that was monitored and controlled using the devices. I could set ranges with eWeLink so that the inputs would control outputs. Temperature and Humidity sensors controlled heaters and fans and timer variables built into the application controlled the lighting.

I bought one of these wifi relays and used an old power supply that we all have lying around and got a internet-enabled garage door for $15, and it came with an extra RF remote to boot. It doesn't get much easier or cheaper than that unless you opt for the $12 model that doesn't come with a nifty enclosure and RF remote.
