Okay, this actually fixed it my sticky caps-lock key. But I'm sad that this is happening for a laptop that costs more than $1000.
Same. For a laptop of this price, it's unacceptable.

IcedCoffee how lmao if something spills or something is sticky the price of the computer shouldn’t be a variable it’s going to effect every computer the same way

Thanks so much! I used the corner of a heavy duty plastic bag and my spacebar feels optimal again. My 2017 MacBook Pro has needed more repairs these past three years than my 1994 Buick Roadmaster station wagon. I'm glad I didn't have to send it away again over this one. I have a 2020 MBA with a key like this and I was afraid to really mess with it. I took it to an authorized dealer today and they told me it would be 7-10 days and would probably involve a top-case and keyboard replacement. Now I found this video, ran a credit card around the key in question, and it WORKS!! Thank you!!
When one of my keys get sticky and mushy I just tap it with pressure over and over and the stickiness goes away.

I noticed this problem about 8 months after I purchased my laptop. I called to see if there was an buzz about the poor performance of this keyboard and at the time the employee said there wasn't and my quick google search did not show anything. I am glad to know I am not alone in this issue of the sticky butterfly keyboard!

It's a software keynote. You'll have to wait until September, November or next March.
Why should they? It's a developers conference to unveil new software for them
This method works pretty well, personally I like to use a .38mm guitar pick (perfect fit) and follow behind with compressed air as I clear out the channels and grooves.

Yippee! first my shift key got sticky and then my spacebar. Seeing you clean tiny bits of crap out of the crevices gave me hope. I chose a laminated id card and scraped away. Worked perfectly. Will now clean all my keys. Good start to a new year. Thanks
To everyone freaking out cause they spilt something sticky on their keyboard, dampen a small paintbrush with alcohol and you can put it around the edges of the sticky keys and after a bit of persistance it should get better :)

Excellent - Based on Luke's recommendations I used a business card which seems to have helped somewhat. Will keep trying until it's 100% effective

Solid. This worked great for me. For now my issues is with the left shift key and the fn key. The space bar hasn't caused much of a problem.
Thank you so much for this, I knew this was going to be an issue when I bought this machine but I had completely forgotten about it over time and the keyboard had become my favourite keyboard to use until the shift key got sticky a few days ago, I thought I was going to have to go to apple but this trick fixed it in all of about 5 minutes. i used the edge of an atm receipt because it is very thin. really pushed it in and moved it back and forth and it worked so well that you couldnt even tell there was a problem. :)

My keys are also hyperactive, like the "A" key and space bar randomly add a bunch of extra characters. Impossible to type.

I decided to watch this video as my H key was stuck down. I clicked the video and having a relatively new MacBook I was obviously really worried. Decided to give the key a hard wiggle and it fixed it. I watched the video anyway and it was great, ill be sure to use this if it happens again as I am sure that this would be a more permanent solution. Than you Luke.
Had an actual guitar pick beside me when I started watching this video and used it while watching. By the end of the video my space bar stopped sticking. THANK YOU!!!

you are a lifesaver dude, i used a slightly thick paper edge (my mascotte roll cigarette paper cover), round it to all 4 corners of the R key. it works!

Dude, thanks for the tip. that 10 seconds saved me some serious cash. I just used a business card instead of the tool you use and it worked fine (but I would use caution to not shred the business card and then putting little bits of paper into your keyboard.

I can't believe this actually worked! Good job, thanks for the tip, this was driving me crazy and I didn't want to go to apple since my warranty is expired.
I have a suggestion for those who want to try. A few days back, I found a sticky switch on my mechanical keyboard, sticky inside from dust, not fatal but annoying.
Then I took a butane lighter fluid can and shot some into the gap. As the organic solvent flush away whatever is in there, it is also very volatile and evaporates in seconds. After that, it is good as new.
Please do not do this if the laptop is powered on, that is a great way to damage other components. Use contact cleaner spray to do this, it comes in cans similar to canned air
I used one of those tooth picks that has floss at the other end and it fixed it within seconds! Thanks for the video :)
Thank you! I used my thumbnail to the same effect - I was very cranky as it was fine when I took it to the apple store to get another known defect fixed (screen) and it came back with a sticky spacebar and I thought I was going to have to take it back in to be fixed

I had the same problem with my Surface Laptop where right side Shift, Enter, Backspace and Del buttons were affected. Taking clue from your video i blew hard at the crevices of these buttons with my mouth. It worked and stickiness is almost gone.

Fun Fact:
You can also use a toothpick.
If a side of the spacebar is stiff, use the toothpick there

Thank you so much! This worked for me. I just used a thin piece of cardboard from a soap box and wedged it under the edges of the "a" key that was sticking. I wish Apple would just fix this problem though.

Bought a 2016 MacBook Pro with three keys being stuck. 3D printed a guitar pick and used sandpaper to polish the pick. It worked like a charm! Got clicky buttons now :)

Thanks Luke. My "i" key sometimes didn't work sometimes did "ii" or "Ii" instead of "i" or "I". I dont have a guitar pic so I just got a new dollar bill and ran it around the "i" a number of times. Turned on the computer; tested it; it works.
It's a 2015 MacBook Pro. Its never given me a problem. I was concerned it was going to be a big deal. I figure you saved me at least $60; as I don't have to take it in for service. Thank you Luke. - Subscribed.

It fixed me 1 and 2 keys, but for the space bar, there is a better solution.
Go the System Preferences, chose "Keyboard", and turn off "Key Repeat".
Worked for me.
