The thorny subject of soloing on bass has been a long and fiercely contested debate. As a bass player, you don't HAVE to be a great soloist and many of the best bass players out there are known for simply holding down the groove and supporting what’s already happening.
BUT being able to step out front whenever your big moment comes is something that many bass players would love to be able to do. And in this video I’m going to walk you through the five surefire ways to fix your bass solos.
As always, see you in the shed…
    Scott :)

    #1 could also be “modes”
    #2 … “on the 1”
    #4… “the same licks”
    #5 … “ in 1 or 2 keys”
But also 100% agree with all of your answers.

Another at least three fails. 1: Lack of articulation. When you are playing melodies on bass, you don't make the notes sing with some human expression. So you don't add Hammer-ons, Pull-offs, Slides, String-bending, or Vibrato. So add those articulations into your playing and you'll see and here some wonderful results. 2: You don't add dynamics into your playing. So you play quiet all the time or you are just slamming away all the time. So you can learn to pluck hard or soft and learn how to control your plucking intensity on the fly. So learn some dynamics and your solos will work out for the better. And finally 3: You don't understand Tone-shaping. Now obviously you have to move your fretting-hand around all over the place because you have to fret notes. But you forget that you can move your plucking-hand as well. Usually it is glued to the neck pickup. I was guilty of this too. And being on the neck pickup is a grate default position for your average bass playing in a band setting. But unglue that plucking-hand and move it around as you pluck. If you do that, you will add tone-shaping into your solos and that can make them even more interesting.

      Good supplemental support !
I’ll tell you what, all of Scott’s 5 fails really lead back to fail # 1, especially #2, 3, and 4. That said, your 3 fails pretty much fall into the same category. Hence, it looks like you could kind of say there’s two major fails, and each of those two fails have sub points that need to be addressed. 👨🏻
      1) Melody 2) Vocalization

There’s always someone to click on the thumb down, but why ??
Scott is a very good pedagogue and in addition he is a very good bassist.
It is possible that this lesson is not complete but it manages to give a maximum of information in a short video, otherwise it would take more than 10 hours of video to explain all the tricks of improvisation and harmony

I feel like many people click dislike if the video's not the exact information they were looking for or they just didn't particularly care for it. I only dislike videos that I think nobody should see, so I actually hardly ever do that. If it wasn't what I'm looking for I'll just leave.

Bass solo... Best part of any gig to use the gents and go to the bar.
I play bass, I love playing in bands and I love the sound of the bass... But bass solos (just like drum solos) are the musical equivalent of an ad break in a TV show for me.
I'm sure the people making the adverts are very talented, but I'm putting the kettle on...

      @@chazmartin5725 Fair comment.
I love playing bass. Been in bands for years. Never felt a bass solo was an exciting thing though. I've seen Bootsy Collins play. Amazing and talented musician no doubt. I'm bored after ten minutes still. I like songs, that's all. Just personal preference.
As a comparison... I like watching football, but don't enjoy those guys who can do tricks with a football all day. Very clever, but mundane. I rather see two whole teams play a game.
      Just personal opinion.

  • @brianwilliams1588

The one term I will never forget when it comes to soloing came from a Jazz Festival I went to in high school. The judges listen and record on tape their thoughts, tips, and critiques for the bands they were listening to. There was one judge commenting on a saxophone solo and referred to, and I quote:
    "Diarrhea of the horn"
and went on to explain that it is not enough to know what notes to use, but also when not to play a note at all, and that goes for all instruments.
Also, in art, this idea is referred to as "negative space," and it's the idea that an object can't have form if the empty space around it doesn't also have form.

You told not to do everything I try not to do but fall back into, I do find the soloing is very effected by the other guys you are playing with, som actually get lost when I don’t play the root notes, drives me mad. One thing I found that helped me solo was to solo using no root notes which is a great challenge.

There is no one more browbeaten and demeaned than are us bassists. Don't play solos--learn guitar if you want that. Don't play so loud. Don't play so busy. But also, don't play so boring. Don't slap. Don't play 5-string. Don't play so many high notes. Don't play all low notes. Did you clip your nails? Don't use a pick. Where's your pick? Don't play fretless. Don't play at all, the synth player does that. Don't leave your room.

    • @buckemptier
      @buckemptier Před 2 lety

If you are playing keyboard you do best to take keyboard lessons. Embrace the keyboard and you will enhance your abitity to platy all instruments.
When you take music courses at a university theory courses are all taught on the keyboard, then you have lessons on playing your instrument.
Whay he's talking about, all it it, for example playing the arpegios, thats all done on a keyboard too, so if your learned the keyboard you be able to do what's in this class and then some.

Im interested in bass but the absurd amount of ads I've seen of you advertising your course have been really deterring me from it. It's just annoying, I appreciate trying to teach people something as beautiful as music, but over-advertisement is a thing. Shoving a thing down people's throats makes them not want it, not accept it.
