I bought this model several weeks ago and yes very expensive for a 650 single. BUT it has SUBLIME clutch and transmission with assist/slipper and up and down quick shifter! It is hands down THE most powerful single cylinder of ALL motorcycles sold today! It has nice suspension and handling for it's displacement....yes it is is tall but no taller than a Yamaha T7 which btw has no more hp and weighs A LOT LOT more and lacks the cool features...Also virtually all 700 Yamahas currently go for premium dollars well over msrp which no one can buy them for around here...I have taken the 690 on rides that I personally would have had to turn back on several times on anything heavier....the bike DELIVERS me every time! I recently rode it 205 miles which maybe 75ish were on zig zagging steep mountain dirt road....I was so tired coming back down (in pitch dark) but the bike handled so well I never got scared....Then back on the lonesome highway I rode at speeds up to 80mph.....vibration is much better than most singles if you ask me! I mean it IS a big single but it was fine the only wobble ever is trying to acclerate to top speed as fast you can through the gears ....i think the weight transfers backwards and rear suspension compresses as the forks extend and briefly you have less than ideal stability and a little front twichyness.....easily rectified by not doing that lol.... but it has not scared me so far....it is typical of bikes set up for the dirt...a steering damper would be something to consider i suppose....But IF you are like me and HATE boring under powered bikes? You love the motor on this bike! This bike seriously loves to wheely ....providing of course setting traction control to allows it (or turn it off!) ! It also LOVES to spin the rear tire making it easy to slide around turns on fire roads! This motorcycle is for people who LOVE to enjoy PERFORMANCE! Even maybe more than the sights and destination....if all you care about is "getting to destination"? You can save a ton of money buying more practical means....This motorcycle would be WASTED on anyone too timid to explore what the model has to offer! AKA going faster lofting the front end sliding etc....This is a RIDER's motorcycle NOT just a tool to get you from point a to point b for least money ...it is the Porsche of Big displacement single cylinder dual sports ....along with its fraternal twin Husky 701 it is hands down THE BEST of that catagory! You simply could not spend enough money trying to modify any other single cylinder dual sport to achieve what this model provides.....and that is off the showroom floor! Spend a few grand on making the 690 even better? You would have ultimate machine in this class.....Having said all this there is NO ideal compromise....you have to own a stable of motorcycles to truly do each type of riding with best result....Trying to force one to do it ALL great? Is a hopeless pipe dream to begin with....pick the MAIN type thing you enjoy and start with THAT then make it livable for other demands

I have the 701. I've seriously modified it. Nomad Adv fairing. Luggage racks, running 50/50 tyres and a Seat Concepts seat and a low front mudguard. It is a fantastic TET bike. But for a big tarmac trip with a few easy trails, there are much better bikes. I have a Tiger 900 Rally Pro which is superb on the road and with decent 50/50 tyres is useable on easy trails. But for someone like me, who does half my kilometrin on dirt roads, and about 65% of my riding hours, with light camping gear, this is the best bike on the market for me. And I'm no off road expert. If I were better, I could ride a bigger bike off road.

@@MattPerry if you're asking me, I've had clutch problems, and I've had a Rekluse which I've just thrown away. 2 of my friends have newer models than my 2016 model. The extra 5 or 6 bhp make the bike a lot livelier. One friend has had no trouble, another friend's bike spat its engine out. Husqvarna France were good but slow with the repairs. So, my experience is reliability is not fantastic. But there really is nothing similar. I've put about 50,000 km onto mine, mostly TET miles or highway getting to TET or other mixed tarmac/trail mix. The clutch is a known issue. My trouble-free friend put an Oberon slave, his bike never misses a beat, but this friend is a steady rider, doesn't wheelie or slide his back end about or generally arse about, whereas I do. So that might explain my clutch even though I tend to be gentle on clutches, even hoisting wheelies or helping the back end break out with a bit of clutch. In 35 years of riding, I've had 4 clutches go, 2 on an R1200GS air-cooled. BMW were dicks with the warranty claim, and 2 on this 701. The 701/690 is in a class of its own. It will do everything well enough if you throw some money at sorting out its comfort which out of the crate is, frankly, crap. Out of the crate, its neither a good trail bike and horrible on the road unless you treat it like a supermoto.

Obviously the one he tested must have some serious problems. I own a 2020 model. Mine is very smooth nearly zero vibration. Brakes, it would be nearly impossible to find better brakes. My 690 can cruise north of 75 mph no problem very steady and confident. I can ride mine all day in comfort. I can see why some may opt for a better seat I can understand why a big touring machine would be your pick if never off road and interstate is your thing. But if backroads, dirt and some interstate is plan I have found this to be a very very good bike. I have owned touring bikes, dual sports, super moto, Harley’s and pure race dirt bikes. Again his test bike 690 is no reflection of my 690. Love mine.

@@thetablecreek +1 I own a 2021 690 coming from a 2020 Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports and the first hundred kilometers the vibrations are there, but they are not so high. I use it for commuting working days (80km in total. 55 of highway the others very twisty roads) and almost every weekend I navigate Wikilock ofroad tracks, I use the fastest route to the start of the track, and then twisties to return home. At first, and coming from a big adventure bike, the highway kilometers are a pain in the as, and if you use a dirt helmet the wind will torture your neck beyond 100 km/h. But with a proper road full screen helmet I can cruise at 120/140 km/h without any problem, and if necessary, the bike still has plenty of power to overtake in a blink. It is way more responsive and aggresive than the Honda at any speed.
Now I'm planning a big ofroad trip for around 10 days, and I'm so excited about it... I'm in love with this bike.

I like my 690 a lot. Haven’t noticed the vibrations that some of the reviewers have complained about until I reach 85 mph which I don’t really reach very often. I bought it so I could get back into the trails since my other bikes are street only. I was thinking about the ktm exc500 or the 690 enduro and chose the 690 because of the larger fuel capacity and higher mileage maintenance intervals. My only complaint at first was the low rpm throttle response but a catless slip on exhaust, Rottweiler fueling dongle and uni foam air filter has helped remedy that a lot. Plus I’ve realized that the motor is happier above 3500 rpm’s. It’s been a great addition to my garage and don’t see it going anywhere anytime soon.

I tested the 690 for a week and came to the exact same conclusion. A few additional personal experiences: The exhaust gets SMOKING hot. I damaged my riding pants on the left foot because the exhaust header meltet my pants through the heat shield. The exhaust can gets so hot that you can cook eggs on it. Be really careful if you put luggage on it, it will catch fire! The normal lights are crap, no use at all at noon. The tank is reaaaly small, only ~200km range and that is without luggage. As pavlin stated, in order to build a true adv motorcycle you have too throw another 3k at it.
Bigger tank, bigger seat, rally tower, bar weights to decrease vibration, aftermarket exhaust so it doesnt cook you. What you then get is a 14.000€ adv bike which is really good on dirt but only acceptable on the street. But if we are honest with ourselves, the truth is that most riders ride 90%+ on asphalt roads. Do you really want to compromise 90% of riding only to have a little better dirt perfomance which most riders cant really use anyway? For me at least its not and i am glad that i got a tenere 700. Dirt perfomace more than enough for my skill, street performance MUCH more enjoyable and also adv ready for 10k, 4k less than the 690. Thanks for confirming my view pavlin.

The problem is that not a single manufacturer can be bothered making a truly dirt capable lightweight adv bike. All we get are 200 kg road based bikes and for committed dirt riders, they are unsuitable. The manufacturers have been pushing this “adventure weekend warrior” concept for a while and it’s obviously selling bikes. You are spot on re needing to blow lots of money on the few capable dirt bikes, but that is our only option. I did exactly that on my Xchallenge/DR/DRZ and found my perfect bike, the EXC500. And look at the new CRF250/300’s, pathetic tank size, underpowered and still the same weight as a DR.
Pavlin once said that you should choose the bike for the worst terrain you ride. That is what why we buy and modify these bikes and put up with less than perfect road ability.

I have the same thoughts. The 690 might be great offroad, but honestly: do I need this offroad capability? I am just back from a two week vacation of 4000km here in Sweden which were 2/3 gravel roads. Even on the slightly more tricky tractor trails in the woods I did not really have problems on my much heavier 790 R. That bike offers 450km range and much more comfort. So while I do in fact find the idea of "lighter is better" mostly true, for travelling on roads (be it paved or unpaved) the 690 might be overkill!

      @Sweetw4ter Před 3 lety +1

    • @kai-uweoch1159
      @kai-uweoch1159 Před 3 lety +1

Another aspect is, that a lighter bike that handles tricky sections for sure better than a heavier one, gets much more negatively effected by luggage weight. While I don‘t notice so much difference on the handling of my 790 with 20kg gear on it, 20kg on the rear of a 690 are very clearly noticeable. My travel partner on a 690 was really happy doing day rides from a basecamp with no luggage, while it didn‘t make so much difference for me to have the luggage on the bike or not.

My bike is a 2011 Yamaha XT1200Z and we go on holiday trips around Europe & for a while I had some trouble with my windshield, because it created turbulences and noise around the helmet.
I found that helmets work best aerodynamically if they are in undisturbed wind, but of course you get more wind and pressure to the chest with no windshield.
The XT1200Z is a completely different bike of course with a sofa seat & luggage wise etc.
My previous bikes were sport touring bikes.
I liked the long travel suspension of the KTM 690 even on normal roads, because around here most roads are old & bumpy

Just came back from a17 days 5'000km ride through the Western Carpates. Street only, as my GF came along with a Kawa Z1000. I have tje Husky 701 Enduro which is practically identical to the 690 Enduro.
From my subjective point of view you absolutely can use it as travel bike. With an A2 licence and "only" 32kW, I did max 160 km/h on the German Autobahn. Wind protection is zero, agree. A rallye fairing makes sense. But anything beyond that - open roads, small roads and, naturally, dirt tracks - are pure pleasure.
Regarding the seat, my butt feels fine on the standard. I prefer the long and slim seat, as you can switch positions as you want, and this is great against lower back fatigue.
As for the vibrations - no worries, got used to it. Tyres have a lot to do with it too. For street riding, I use Conti TrailAttack3 and they are super quiet and perform very good.
Seat hight is certainly a concern. I'm 183cm with a 95cm inseam and 75kgs of weight. So the bike remains high and I'm half-tiptoeing.
For the rest: just try it and be surprised...

I purchased the 690 over the T7 because it weighs less. I do a lot of BDR style rides and camp off the bike for days at a time, and my bike loaded out with camping gear weighs what the T7 does bare. The weight savings allows me to pick my bike up much more easily, especially if I have multiple "get-offs'" in a day, and at 58 years old that is critical to me . My 690 does have vibration issues on the street but nothing crazy. Yes, the bike has buffeting issues too, but I added a taller wind screen and it is now barrable. Overall I am pleased with the bike; it is barrable on the multi-hour pavement rides at high speeds and more than capable in the dirt. Ride smart and ride often!

The price of the KTM / Husky is the one major problem but in reality they are really the only bikes in that category of bike.
The unicorn for me is the DR650 because it is cheap, almost half the price of the KTM and roughly the same weigh, but it can be modified to how you want it, sure it doesn’t have the power but in the real world it has enough.
Sadly the DR is no longer available in Europe and this is the last year in Australia. 😭
My Tenere 700 is a better road bike than my DR but I much prefer to ride my DR because at the end of the day it is weight that makes the difference much the same reason I would have a KTM / Husky over just about anything else, highway comfort is one thing but trying to wrestle a heavy bike around is a whole different story, horses for courses.

It all comes down to intention. Do you want your heart to soar on crappy third world roads and off road, or do you want it to soar on the highway? When I got off the highway, I could never see the point of going back. I try and find a way around the highway, or I grit my teeth and suck it up if I have to. In the end it's a choice.

Yep, great honest review. I love my Husky 701 for dirt, and road travel up to 60 MPH. Anything over that, it feels sketchy like Im pushing my luck with its stability. It is just not geared or setup for sustained high speed on tarmac. It'll may be able to get you to 90 MPH real quick, but you wont want to cruise over 65. On my interstates here in Texas anything under 75 mph and you will be impeding traffic. Excellent big bore off road bike though, once you hit the dirt you wont be able to quit smiling. Also the quick shifter is garbage, and I had to add a fueling dongle to get the low rpm bucking to go away. Cheap fix at $30.

I wonder if the tire pressure was wrong or something on that bike? I have ridden the previous 2018 model from New York to Miami fully loaded with luggage and my girlfriend on the back with zero issues and rode from LA to Canada solo at 90 mph (145 km) all day in a bad cross wind with zero issues. I simply do not understand how or why you found it unstable? It has the rake and trail set up for high speed desert racing so it is extremely unlikely to be unstable. This motorcycle is an excellent adventure bike build platform (better only could be H701 LR). It is not ADV ready in stock. You have to consider it to build it up your own, by putting up the things you need for your understanding of what is a ADV bike. Not necessarily you have to put rally kits for many thousands of EUR/USD/RUR (millions ;) ), you can make decent ADV bike for reasonably low costs. This building applies to most aspects of this bike, starting from windshield and ending on luggage rack and/or exhaust.
So I think, it is not correct to take stock enduro bike to the highway (autobahn) and expect it to behave like Yamaha R1 or BMW GS 1250. Just put some low cost windshield and will be acceptable handling, feeling at speeds around 120 km/h. You really dont need more on highway when travelling packed full with all kind of luggage that we carry with us :)

    • @motorcycleadventures

The 690 is a bike that draws interest from the proper enduro crowd (EXCs, TE/FE, WR etc) as they're looking for something they can travel with, and also the adventure bike crowd, as they're looking for something easier to handle on the dirt. The two crowds come together at the 690 and have arguments about how smooth it is etc lol. For me I wouldn't have one as it does neither the dirt, or the road well enough. It is a perfect example of a bike that tries to be the jack of all trades, but ends up being the master of none. If I could only have one bike, I would choose my poison and get either a proper enduro bike, or a proper adventure bike. As I already have a TE, I am considering buying an 890 Adventure R this year. It is sad that EURO 5 is killing the spirit of motorcycling, what is happening not only with KTMs. The perfect bike doesn't exist that's why we are modifying our OEM bikes. Even You with your Tenere 660 and even I with mine (power commander, exhaust, air box and etc.)So I think this bike is very good for travelling, perhaps one of the best but to ride on it you need to know how to fix it, what issues it has that's why I love motorcycling. Maybe some day Yamaha or Honda will make motorcycle with weight 150 kg and 70 HP. But now even new Tenere 700 is big plum where you have to do some modifications and it still won't be a perfect bike. Lots of people doesn't even know how to ride this bikes if the nice, flat as table road goes to end. I am always saying to feel free I need in my garage at least 3 bikes and one of those must be 2T for extrema fun, dualsport for travelling gravel roads and one for street riding. So if I can buy one bike and spend extra money for modifications I am very happy, because I am closer to my type of perfect bike and it is cheaper than have 3, 4 or 5 bikes.

thank you for speaking on the highway stability, i havent rode one but my drz400 weighs the same and has a similar design, its very unstable at speed cruising, fine to rip to 150kph in town for a minute but on divided highway i cant set it to 120kph and cruise im a candy wrapper in the breeze any cross wind and im in the next lane.. doesnt help im 6'4" and 140lbs
i can put up with vibrations, harse seats, even short gears and a lower top speed... but driving several hundred kms a day i dont want to be tense the entire time, constantly fighting the wind i wanna relax and let the highway kms drift by
i think ill lean towards the tenere700 its cheaper than the ktm here in canada, i think ill appreciate the extra 100lbs on the highway more than ill hate it in the dirt

I think you completely missed the whole concept of the 690. This is not the best dual sport / touring bike out there, but it can do it. As you mentioned, it is primarily an off road bike with a licence plate designed for people who want to spend more time off road. KTM make the 790 - 890 for a more road focused dual sport riding. You spent most of the time testing it where it was never going to shine. You should have done a fair comparison and took it off road and then compare it to other bikes but understand that you were not able to do that.

It's not that you missed the point, you always have a negative view on KTM as a brand, for example the 1190 adventure r you constantly referred to reliability issues, then someone directly asked if the bike you tested has had any issues, the reply was no, but straight away you mentioned reliability issues in another reply. You love Yamaha and seem incapable of giving reliable reviews on other brands.

4:25 i disagree about the vibration. I mean, yes, it is there, but you just barely feel it in the handlebars, and when looking at the pegs, the major reason you feel it is due to the lack of rubber inserts on the stock pegs. you can buy the rubber insert and it improves comfort by a lot on a long trip, then you cna just take them off when you get to your destination.

Your want to travel to Africa in 50-50 off-road/crappy roads. Is it viable because of its super light weight? I have a BMW F850GSA and that weighs a ton -- after dropping it a ton of times -- not easy to lift in mud or sand. Then the KTM890 Adventure weights 100 lbs less than the F850GSA which is good... My mom's home health care worker didn't get her check and takes care of 8 grandkids they didn't have food so I gave 140$ to help them.
