Winter Day At The Cabin | Making Bone Broth

  • Welcome back to the channel! I'm back up at the cabin by myself and have a few things planned for today. We got a light dusting of snow last night and it finally looks like winter is here to stay.
    I make bone broth a few times a year, usually in 20L batches and it's about that time when I need to make another batch. Today I will show you how I make our bone broth/ chicken stock and walk you through how to properly preserve it for the shelf.
    While the broth is simmering away, I will cook my lunch outside over the fire and enjoy the mild snowy weather. This is the time of year when most of our free time is spent at the cabin because there's not much going on around the homestead.
    Our long-term plan is to end up in a tiny off-grid cabin in the woods. Stay tuned to watch our journey to get there.
    We hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!

    You did a really great job of explaining and showing the process. I’ve had a brand new pressure canner for a couple of years and been too nervous to use it…lol. Always,fun to watch a fellow local content creator and homesteader.

    If the bottles just sat on the table without being placed in a pressure pot, all the bottles will seal as long as the lids are tight and the bottles have hot liquid in them. We can lots of things and there is never a need to place the bottles in a pressure cooker after they are sealed. Why don't you just try one bottle with boiled water in it, seal the lid and wait for the lid to vacuum seal then you will stop the pressure cooker part of your process.

    • @living.different
      @living.different  Před 5 měsíci +3

      It is not food safe to let meat products seal themselves without being pressure canned. The risk of bacteria is incredibly high . I would not recommend eating any sort of low acid food that has not been properly processed.

      @@living.different we haven't had any canned food issues yet using the non-pressure method however you have a great point. Just finished a bottle of muscles 20min ago for lunch so we'll see.

    I don't waste the meat, I let it cool, pick off the meat, store in zip lock baggies and freeze. I cook the meat with BBQ sauce in a small crockpot and use for sandwiches.

    I only keep a small amount of firewood on the deck. It adds weight to the deck, and you can easily store it on the ground nearby. You don't need a tarp over firewood either; on a wet day, just get logs one layer down and they'll be dry.

    I found this video informative. However I do need to clear up one thing. When pressure canning you need to use the correct pressure for your specific elevation. For instance where I am in Western PA United States my correct pressure is 15 lbs. I'm a new subscriber and am planning on binge watching on this cold dreary day 💚
