Another great line from this movie: "For it is the doom of men that they forget..."
I have this very quote tattooed on my arm. the first one I ever got. 🙂
Excalibur (1981) is still the best King Arthur's saga movie ever make.
One of the best movies of all time.
Agreed
I agree
Mrs. Bucket's Husband was there, with King Arthur, he was keeping up appearances.
Lol 😁
@@scottashe984 Agreed! Best ever made!
Visited Dublin Ireland a few years ago. Last day there I hired a driver to take me to some of the iconic places Excalibur was filmed, the lake at the end of the movie where the Lady of the Lake caught Excalibur and the iconic fight between Lancelot and Arthur at the waterfall. Chilling to finally visit the same places I watched many time in the film as a kid
I'm a huge history buff and I love seeing stuff like that. And especially from this movie too that would be pretty awesome.
that is cool.
That final shot of them raising their swords is honestly one of the most majestic things I've ever seen in a motion picture. What a gorgeous movie!
Damn this film has so many iconic moments.
I give a slightly modified version of this speech at weddings. Found that you really need a silver skull helmet and long incendiary staff to pull it off.
I always spike the fruit punch.
“Yes, that’s it!”
I would like to attend one of these weddings sir.
Still gives me chills.
"For it is the doom of men that they forget..."
Lest we forget.
@@happisakshappiplace.6588 Merlin spoke so wisely as always... he gives so much to the movie... what a man!
Man has forgotten.
Do not comply. Never forget home of the free because of the brave.
‘That is a fair lord and a great captain of men,’ said Legolas. ‘If Gondor has such men still in these days of fading, great must have been its glory in the days of its rising.’
‘And doubtless the good stone-work is the older and was wrought in the first building,’ said Gimli. ‘It is ever so with the things that Men begin: there is a frost in Spring, or a blight in Summer, and they fail of their promise.’
‘Yet seldom do they fail of their seed,’ said Legolas. ‘And that will lie in the dust and rot to spring up again in times and places unlooked-for. The deeds of Men will outlast us, Gimli.’
‘And yet come to naught in the end but might-have-beens, I guess,’ said the Dwarf.
‘To that the Elves know not the answer,’ said Legolas.”
This is one of those rare instances where the soundtrack is as much a part of the film as the actors. All the more better for being made before CGI, or before Disney could get their hands on it.
Got me into Wagner!
Well said. I saw Excalibur in the theater in 1981 and this scene still gives me chills decades later. And absolute ZERO CGI but incredible music.
The last ride where the land blossoms again comes to mind. Excellent use of classical music.
Saw it in a theatre in 1981. Was blown away seeing on a truly big screen before the multiplexes took over in the 80’s. So epic to see it at such a young age. Has been a top 3 film of all time ever since I first saw it. It has everything, music, cinematography, acting, action, directing, editing and set design. Criminal that it was not recognized at the time
I saw it in 1981 at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. The audience laughed at the scene of a fully armored Uthur mounting Igraine, but still my favorite machó movie of all time.
"Now lets get drunk and play ping pong"!

One of the best scenes in a superb film.
Wonderful. Just wonderful. What a film.
The over-acting combined with telling instead of showing is why this is a cult film and not a classic.
How to spot Liam Nesson? He’s a head taller than everyone else.
An astonishing movie, the cast, the music, the majesty of such an epic production.
A fitting tribute to the Arthurian Legend.
A great movie and Nicol Williamson's portrayal of Merlin stole it.
absolutely
Have always loved this film.
God I loved Nicol Williamson as Merlin, when I first saw this as a kid. Funny, kind, terrifying, majestic, all knowing. Like a father I suppose.
Some of his lines have become etched into my life. Of the idiotic Uther, "It's easy to love folly in a child"; to Arthur, who asks if he is a dream, "A dream to some. A nightmare to others!"; on the advent of the nation's greatest moment of unity and peace, a plea to remember, for "It is the doom of men that they forget..." So true. Great, great movie. Unforgettable performance.
R.I.P. Nicole Williamson
My favorite is "All for this lunacy called love. This mad distemper that strikes down both beggar and king."
"For it is the doom of men that they forget"
I have walked my way since the dawn of time, sometimes I give, sometimes I take, it is mine to know which and when.
Look into the eyesofthe dragon and dispair, I destroy you, I consign you to oblivion.
It had the same effect on me. I spent a good few minutes during eachofthe LOTR films thinking how great he would have been.
You're right, there are a ton of good lines in this film. Straddles the line of poetry and prose pretty well, which is what you should do with a legend film. That's why The Bible works so well as literature.
We're Knights of the Round Table.
We dance whene'er we're able.
We do routines and chorus scenes
With footwork impeccable.
We dine well here in Camelot.
We eat ham and jam and spam a lot.
We're Knights of the Round Table.
Our shows are formidable,
But many times we're given rhymes
That are quite unsingable.
We're opera mad in Camelot.
We sing from the diaphragm a lot.
In war we're tough and able,
Quite indefatigable.
Between our quests we sequin vests and impersonate Clark Gable.
It's a busy life in Camelot.
I have to push the pram a lot.
"And I will marry!"
Leondegrance: "I don't swing that way, but thanks?"
Leondegrance is Gueneveres dad....
"Merlin, your wisdom has forged this ring." (Arthur)
This is an indicator of the influence that Arthurian legend had on Tolkien's LOTR.
The roots of Tolkien's writing are to be found in the Anglo Saxon and Old Norse literature and his profound sense of morality. Trying to find vague links undermines his real achievement. He was once asked by an interviewer what the Lord of the Rings was about. He simply replied, death. It is about the ending of the world. Mordor Is destroyed, the Elves leave and Aragorn puts the Shire out of limits. The Ents have lost their wives and will die out. Galadriel and Saruman understand this.
We need a king like Arthur now.
Terrific film. ^.^
"On second thought, let us not go to Camelot - it is a silly place."
"It's only a model."
"Shh."
Many excellent actors; however, Nicol Williamson’s Merlin was the glue that held everything together.
1:52 chills every time
Great movie. It gets me every time. And every time I notice Picard's less than enthusiastic response when Arthur says he will marry (his daughter)...
I think maybe he's unsure or that possibly even that he knows his daughter may not be an ideal match for Arthur?
It's because he knows it a Holodeck simulation and not one of his own as they saddled him with a child as punishment.
Do NOT make it so.
@@kentvesser9484 BAHAHAHAHA
Timeless.
I can't help buy cry....I didn't know people could be so noble
The knights of the round table are needed now more than ever
Indeed you're right.
The Once and Future King.
True. You broke my heart, saying it though. 😉💔
Arthur had the coolest battle armour ever in a movie.
I still don't understand its flexibility
I love how after meeting Lancelot, they all adopted his badass chrome armor
3 people forgot about this great victory, for it is the doom of men that they forget
And look upon this moment. Savour it. Rejoice with great gladness. Great Gladness.
Remember it always, for you are joined by it.
You are One. Under the stars.
Remember it well then. This night. This Great Victory.
So that in the years ahead you can say I was there that night with Arthur. The King.
For it is the doom of men that they forget.
beautifully written
Saw it on the big screen years ago.
Breathtaking.
Truly one of the greatest films ever made. So epic. Hollywood is a joke now. No substance in any of the films they're making.
Hollywood died many many years ago. I for the most part only watch old gems now.. Being an 80s kid there are still a lot of 80s movies I have not watched. We don’t need your garbage now Hollywood.
@@camf33 absolutely. It's crap now. There's a few good movies coming out here and there but nothing very mainstream. And the ones that are decent seem to bomb at the box office.
I am sorry but you are WRONG. Great movies come in ALL generations. You love 80s camp, so do I, but greatness is not limited to that.
Beautiful 😥
Merlin is that guy who always brings down the mood at a party.
The Knights of the Round Table!!!
On second thought let's not go to Camelot. Tis a silly place.
Round Table Pizza!
I have to push the Pram a lot.
Never forget !!!!
This movies just full of epic scenes!
I shall build a round table where this fellowship shall meet, and a hall about this table and a castle about the hall. Knights of the round table. I salute you.
I was there that night with Arthur, the King.
Spine tingling scene, even after all these years!!
We eat ham and jam and spam a lot!!
Boorman made a bunch of really good movies but with this and Deliverance he ascended into greatness, though with Deliverance he had much more to work with as James Dickey pretty much laid it out for him, whereas here with the gobbledygook of legends and a bazillion earlier attempts he could easily have gone astray. Masterful.
The Knights of the Round Table are born.
How utterly ....RIGHT....is that last shot ????
So among the knights forming the Fellowship of the Round Table would be Sir Lancelot the Brave, Sir Uryens the Noble, Sir Gawain the Not-Quite-As-Brave-As-Lancelot-Or-Noble-As-Uryens, and the aptly named Sir Not Appearing In This Film.
Great speech by Merlin full of hope promise followed with a portent of warning like all things in man's life is cyclical greatness is fleeting doom and forgetfulness is enivitable
“… your wisdom has forged this ring.”
Followed immediately by music from the Ring!
Epic. Just epic.
one of the best scenes of the movie! adore this movie
EVERYBODY was asking for a seat at the table.
Merlin your wisdom has forged this ring.
Here after so that we remember our bonds.
We shall always come together in a circle, to hear and tell of deads good and brave.
I will build a round table were this fellowship shall meet.
And a hall above the table and a castle above the hall.
And i will marry and the land will have an heir
to wield excalibur
Knights of the round table.
Now put the kettle on.
On second thoughts, lets not, it is a silly place 😉.
This Is THE GREATEST KNIGHT MOVIE EVER MADE !!! I'M SURE WAGNER WAS DOING CARTWHEELS IN HEAVEN KNOWING THAT HIS MUSIC PROVIDED MUCH OF THE SCORE FOR THIS GREAT FILM !!!!!...
Amazing scene in the cinema with the stars!
One of my favourite movies.
Um dos melhores filmes que conta a história do rei Arthur e a espada excalibur, muito bom
this was the best moment in cinema history
John Boorman's best movie ever!!!!
Deliverance might be there as well.
Goosebumps 😯
This is a great scene.
Mister nicol W is the greatest merlin ever a great British actor. Us brits have the greatest actors in the world.
Magnificent.
11-7-2020.
I love this movie.
Gran film.Pero Merlin tiene razon...olvidamos...👀❇✨🌠❤
MASTERPIECE
absolutely
I love how he says it like he just thought of it
For it is the doom of men that they forget.
For it is the doom of men that they forget. -Indeed.
The Best

Picard; "computer, freeze program, increase hair 20%. Resume program..."
Yes.
nicol williamson wow !
No other movie about knights since Excalibur could match the quality of the armor not matter what the budget. Almost can’t watch another film about knights of the armor isn’t as good as in Excalibur
everyone stop cheering and shut up, you should be celebrating this moment - Merlin
Ahh the good old days, where might was right and no politicians, or worse public, so called ‘servants’
1:31 I recognise that voice…….. is this the same actor who was in doctor who? The doctors daughter episode with the hath?
Without this movie, Monty Python would have been deprived of some of their greatest work.
"I will build a........ROUND TABLE"
That is the reason.
When Arthur says 'And I will marry' and puts his hand on the shoulder of a knight, that knight is Patrick Stewart (Captain Picard of Star Trek).
Does that guy age backward or something?
For women that don't understand this,Men always want to be members of a group to try to accomplish things bigger than themselves. This movie is brilliant.
Merlin everyone! Give him... a hand ... 😔
drunk uncles on the 4th of July...here we go
Simple with real affects. Not corny and dated. A myth brought to life. Now with all the ability to make imagination come to life on screen we are in a time with no imagination.
Patrick Stewart still doesn't have hair
He never did ever since he was a young man. He's been bald since early adulthood. I also lost my hair in my early 20s.
Which became the most popular thing even acomplished in politics.
Leadership capabiletes
Merlin trabajador de No Luz
Is the music from Wagner?
Can't we all just get along?
World King.
12 ROUND
Oh, of cpurse, I remember.
We need more round tables, can fit more people lol
This is how I imagine a Berserk live action looking
😊❤😭
That's it.
