    The greatest misconception about One Piece is absolutely the idea of powerscaling. It's god damn stupid. Oda is crafting a story full of colorful characters and life. The fighting is just a shuttle that we ride to the next important story beats with our Straw Hat family.

    • @themilkman5004
      @themilkman5004 Před 2 lety +99

      I still find the power scaling fair in the series because it still accounts for the story. Like Mihawk, introduced early on as the strongest swordsman in the world, we’re in Wano and he’s still the strongest. Or the Crocodile and Luffy fights

    The themes of the show are why Fishman Island is still my favourite arc to this day.
    How Oda presented a society where fascism was left to fester because of the higher class neglecting the struggles of the poor was goddam prophetic.
    And also how he understood that fascism isn't a set of ideologies with a clear core, it's a means to an end, just a method to gain power and oppress people that aren't like you.
    That's why when Luffy asks what humans have ever done to Hody for him to hate them so much and he responds
    "Nothing"
    It cemented this arc as as masterpiece of storytelling.

    Also love the point you made about Zoro! He's way more a of a comedic character than people seem to give him credit for. Calling him a jock is the PERFECT description for him, we love a good-hearted bro!
    Easily my favourite moment of Zoro's is in the post-Enies lobby arc. He's alone at the beach, staring at & contemplating his recently rusted & destroyed sword. No score is playing, the waves are crashing, he looks so introspective as he sits in the lotus pose atop a rock; and after a long, anticipation-building beat, THIS is all he says:
    "This bites."
    Next scene. That's it. It's SO FUNNY. He constantly subverts the stoic samurai character trope to the best results. Obviously he's still a badass and has many genuine moments of reflection and cool (I loved that little moment between him & Brook at the cemetery right after Thriller Bark, for example) but yeah, people seem to often cite him as the most classically grounded character in the series, which wouldn't be bad but doesn't do him enough justice.

    • @irenmorningstar
      @irenmorningstar Před 8 měsíci +10

      Also one of the best Zoro's scenes of that same kind is his introduction after the time skip. We see a ship getting fucking CUT IN HALF, and some will instantly remember that's the same way MIHAWK was introduced, so when we see it was actually Zoro we instantly believe he has become incredibly badass and indestructible now. And it works so well!! The goofy style should feel disjointed with the themes and conflicts but it doesn't at all!

I got Volume 9 (Beginning of Arlong Park) as a present back in 2009 and things like Nami's backstory and walk to the Arlong park immediately hooked me. Shortly after that I somehow found volume's 1 - 50 from an online auction website for a really cheap price. After buying and reading them all I was hooked for life. After that I kept on buying all the new volume's as they were released (53 was the newest at that point) and I currently now own all 98 of the One Piece volumes. I think you made a lot of really great points that are important for people, who wanna get into One Piece, to hear. Especially the parts about the world, characters, and long-term storytelling aspects like the part involving Sanji. The only part I thought was a little strange was the section talking about the fights. I think mostly everybody would completely agree that the events that lead up to the fights are way more important. Wild guess but seeing how warmly she spoke of the trope of finding your own family I would say that is the very reason she doesn’t like Garp. He went against everything the story stands for (given how most of the straw hats were raised by people who they weren’t related to) when he did the minimum to help Ace escape. He is also the complete opposite of what Luffy stands for. Luffy would rather die than not be free and you could say that Garp is someone who doesn’t fight the system and just became a part of it. Climbing as high as he could to get a little bit of that freedom. Even though he knows how messed up and horrible said system is.

      Music, animation and amazing japanese voice actors gives a lot to the whole experience, if there is something that drags you can always skip it, just like when you read.
      There are also short "filler" interaction between the crew and others that are just gold and manga doesn't have them.

    • @otterfire4712
      @otterfire4712 Před rokem

      @@kinsta2949 manga adapted anime typically cover about three chapters per episode, the One Piece anime covers about 2 chapters at most and stretched it out to 1 chapter per episode from Fishman Island to Whole Cake Island. This was due to the anime out pacing the manga. Naruto, One Piece, and Bleach would solve this pacing issue with filler episodes, but Naruto and Bleach would be more famous for it due to the overall length of their filler arcs. One Piece has significantly fewer filler arcs, most of which are only two to four episodes.
      While I appreciate the VAs and music produced, they are the biggest things going for the anime. Meanwhile, reading the manga allows you to follow the journey at your own pace, whether you're a slow or fast reader the manga panels, dialogue, and art aren't going anywhere until you're ready to move on.
      As it is, anime's pros are the inclusion of audio and occasional glimpses of quality animation for important scenes. It is bogged down by a slower pace per episode to minimize filler while keeping itself as a week to week series over the years, which includes some cut corners on animation, whether static images moving around or filling out time recapping recent events.
      While manga lacks the inherent music and VAs, the author still took time to include onomatopoeias to mimic sound produced and you can still listen to your own music while reading it to add to the experience. The manga also enables the reader to experience the content at their own pace, whether fast or slow. It's also the source material for the anime so you're getting the true experience.
      If you've managed to get this far, thank you for reading it all, you may not agree with my thoughts, it's just my perspective between the two. I watched the anime till the early parts of Whole Cake Island before dropping the anime because of how slow each episode dragged. It was especially bad during Dressrosa and I became fed up with it. I managed to get my hands on a collection of the manga and have steadily grown my collection since.

    I have never read or watched One Piece. for years the only thing I knew about it was that it had pirates. that's it. just pirates.
    but I'm really into other anime like Naruto and I watch a lot of videos about that so youtube often recommends me videos about other anime. it's been recommending me your One Piece videos for a while and I recently decided to watch one or two just to get a feel for what the anime/manga is all about.
    and I have to say... you've really inspired me to read and/or watch One Piece now! I definitely plan on reading the manga and I'm so excited to learn more about this world! I've watched most of your videos about OP so I already know some stuff but you have really made me want to get into it so I thank you for that!!

    I love your One Piece vids! I don't think I've seen anyone look at all the complex nooks and crannies of the story and characters on CZcams as much as you do, and your funny edits make me smile.
    I recently decided to read the manga all over again from the beginning. Mental health issues yanked my attention away from everything I love, including One Piece, about 400 chapters ago.
    I have a strangely confident feeling that you'd enjoy Gintama. Unless you've already tried and it ended up not working. Me personally, I liked it until I got totally hooked at episode FIFTY TWO. It seems like a slow start for a lot of people, but genuinely soul touching and way more than worth it for anyone who sticks with it.

    Glad you were able to enjoy the show and thanks for the video. It finally encouraged me to go back and give the show another chance. I was able to enjoy the goofy, storybook look of the show and quirky fun of it all in my first attempt at watching it. The mountain of episodes killed it for me, but to hear you convey the strengths of the characters and themes (also, I'm a sucker for found family trope) has reignited my interest.

      Every time I hear people cry about the number of episodes, I ask them what other shows they have watched, then tell them that the amount of episodes of sub par anime they have watched instead are equal or greater than the amount of incredible episodes of One Piece they refused to watch. It's such a lazy excuse.

    One Piece is such a great anime! I love the characters, the theme, the arks, EVERYTHING. My brother used to always ask me to try and watch One Piece, but I always said maybe, or no because I thought it might be boring or too long. But one day, I decided to watch it and at first it was okay, but as I kept on going it got insanely better. I couldn't believe that I hadn't watched it before when he said. It's such a great show and I feel like just over 1000 episodes still isn't enough. I'm so glad I can watch One Piece. I'm excited for the future episodes and more. I haven't finished it yet, but it is still so amazing to watch. One Piece is my favorite anime, and if you haven't watched it... Then you should. It's definitely worth the 1000+ episodes. There is so much going on, and it is a true masterpiece. For everyone who says One Piece is too long.... It's honestly not when you're a true One Piece Fan. The Characters and everything else about the show just makes you happy. I'm so glad I got the opportunity to watch One Piece.

    This is video is really interesting to watch as a person who had never heard of One Piece before I started reading it in 2009 so I never have had any initial expectations for the series. Usopp has and still is my favorite character to this day and I actually didn’t know there were people who disliked him. I have never actually watched One Piece’s anime adaption but instead I have read the series many times all the way through (I own all 98 currently released One Piece manga volumes) and I would recommend checking the manga as I know it has many differences to the anime/is paced a lot better like you mentioned. At least you should check out the cover stories and Oda’s SBS corners as they Include a lot of funny and interesting information about the One Piece world
    As you said One piece isn’t just about the fights but more about the meaning behind the fights. I sometimes watch those so called “power scaling videos” and find that they are done mostly for fun. Of course, there are some who think things like “stronger character = better character but they are the bad apples found in any community. The theory/discussion side of the community is really fun though in my experience (Tekking101, Mr Morj, King of Lighting etc.)
    Also, I am not sure if you dislike Garp or not because of his actions/inactions but for me he is one of the best written characters in the series because he is so conflicted and a morally gray character.

      the cover stories are so much fun!!
      as someone who mainly followed the anime instead of the manga i always wondered why those little follow-ups to already existing arcs weren't adapted into something like "canon filler" episodes between arcs. instead they came up with wild new stories and the cover stories stayed manga-only.
      my favorites have to be ace's marine base infiltration and the coby-meppo diaries, though enel's moon adventures are super fun as well!
      oda's SBS likewise give a lot of background knowledge, so i second the notion of those being well worth checking out! there are wikis where every cover story and SBS are easy to access, too~

    Great video and I agree with a lot of what your saying but I would like to mention that I feel a lot of these opinions you heard on certain characters like Usopp like "He's bad because he's weak" aren't generally echoed by most of the fandom and while the fights are the main parts often focused on by the fans are the fights I think that's more of a lot of people who consider fights more of the climaxes (which they mostly are) and are often trying to get other people into One Piece. There's a lot of character and story focused review content if you look around.

      It is interesting to hear that and I guess I was in a different space, but going into the One Piece tag on a lot of social media sites showed a lot of 'physical character strength' talk and when asking a bunch of other people who'd never seen the show, they also assumed One Piece was just another action heavy shonen piece that didn't really have a deeper meaning to it. Although that may be a case of the loudest people are the most noticeable I suppose? BUT that's good to know and I'll definitely be looking around for better studies of this show :]
