    Well done, a good test & comparo! For my 2bobs worth, I own a 1290SA-T & a well sorted 950ADV-Lo so my comments might be biased. I really understand the changes / improvements but @70 and 5/11, they wont shift me now. However ... The new switch gear on the 1290 strikes me as prone to damage in falls or slips. I have had this with BMWs. My older SA-T has switches like the 890 but with a very positive indicator press for off! BUT in reality KTM nails switch simplicity compared to others. Those bags on Clubby's bike are KTM branded R2R (actually made by Enduristan) . The original design is the Blizzard which has 3 sizes & extra attachments. Now I could rave on about VTwins and the 950 (knowing it's limitations in tight stff) and I like real keys, but ....

Figuring out what bike(s) will fit you and what you want to do with it/them is a challenge, and your channel is a brilliant resource! I was on my 690 yesterday riding parts of the CA BDR (7 & alt 7) and was thinking two things: I really wouldn’t want a heavier bike (only had to pick it up once so that was a win) for the technical stuff (although maybe an 890…) and a 100km section of blacktop without any wind protection after a decently hard day of riding is really not ideal. What I really want is a 500 EXE that turns into 1290 when it’s on the street-can you put a word in for me at KTM?

      @@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV Oh, I know. It really does annoy me. But it is the same on the GS and the new Panamerica. I don’t really like auto-cancelling indicators. They either work too long, or too short. Perhaps they should incorporate a lean angle sensor for the switch off. It can switch off after you have moved through a turn. ;) I am not sure I would say he 890 is much better. I do think all the switchgear feels a bit more flimsy on that.

    I am not in any way opposed to 'tech' on bikes. It is evident that they can improve the ride characteristics as you point out. Watching this video two things made me say, "Why?"; The self-locking electronic gas cap and the electronic seat release.. What do you do if 100 miles from nowhere when something like this breaks? Seems to me overkill in the 'tech' department.

      I very much agree with you Marshall about all the electronical parts, but how much of the things we use on a daily basis aren't already heavily tech-specced? A Tesla is as electronical as you get them, could leave you stranded. Your phone is as well, could get you out of a tricky situation if you need help. A motorcycle is used harder in harsher environments absolutely, but if electronics elsewhere work fine and has become reliable, shouldn't it be in a motorcycle as well? I'm not arguing for or against here, I'm just sharing my thoughts as this very question you bring up is something I think about myself too. I just bought a Husky 701 which is full of tech, at least compared to my previous bikes. I plan on taking that bike to remote areas on my adventures.

    Great review for you and Clubby . I’ve owned the new 1290s model for 5 months and yes the indicator switch was awkward at first but you get used to pushing down on it instead of in , it works fine . The S model screen is taller and would be your choice. As a older rider I find the 1290 TFT size is a winner for quick glance over the much smaller 890 screen. I rode in the KTM Rally in QLD this year and witnessed Chris B smash the R model thru everything, I’ve no doubt what this bike can do . I ride my 2008 KTM 950se for my off-road fix . • @MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV
      @MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV  Před 2 lety +2

      Firstly I just want to declare I am supported by Adventure Moto, who fit me out with KLiM gear. That aside, although expensive, I would buy a KLiM suit regardless. For all weather conditions 40 degrees to -6 degrees I have gone for the Badlands Pro for international rides, primarily because of protection and the D30 armour. I'm pretty confident many people would say that's way to hot for the hot weather. I find I can regulate my temperature and I take the jacket off if stopped for long periods. I also have a KLiM Dakar jacket that goes great in the heat and I can instal my D30 armour into the jacket but I wouldn't like to wear that in the cold. The new Kodiak is great and has a puffer jacket that is very effective when it gets cold. My other very strong view is whatever you get needs to be Gortex based, water proof. Makes a huge difference with managing fatigue on big long rides. My strong view, head into Adventure Moto and try on a couple of things. Get ready for the price shock, but remember you get quality that is going to last years.

    Would you ride it Cairns to Darwin?

      For our trip, that is recorded on this channel, it would have been a handful on the 2nd day with all that mud. But apart from that yep.

    The biggest issue ktm faces with their 1290 SADV R is can they make enough bikes to supply the demand!?

    Guys, you're ring 40k Euro worth of adventure bikes in full Klim gear, worth at least another kidney on this side of Atlantic. For the love of God, spend the hundred bucks and buy a microphone! Other than that great and insightful review. You can't imagine how much I envy the riding over there.

      Spot on, get some cheap lapel mics with 5m cords or directional mics on the camera or remote mics for both riders.

      @@MrEtnorb I hate to say it. I have all that gear and more. Great dual channel radio mics, directional mics, just didn't have the room.

    $32,000! That much money for a motorcycle and they have electronically removed features? Buy a license key to make it all work? That is a deal breaker for me. Not acceptable. Come on KTM, stop taking the piss. I'm a die hard KTM fan but do not accept this business approach at all.
