    Since the goggles make the sight much darker, the iris automatically widens to let more light pass, while the imperceptible ultraviolet light is still unfiltered however, hence then causing greater damage to the retina when looking at the sun. It's the same reason for why not to look at the sun with cheap sunglasses (missing UV-filter) or at solar eclipse (it's dark but UV is still there).

    • @SmallSpoonBrigade
      @SmallSpoonBrigade Před měsícem

      What's the point of the welding goggles if they don't protect against UV? There is significant UV generated during the process of welding. The damage is hardly just because it's bright, it also generates significant UV.
      That being said, you shouldn't look at the sun directly with any sunglasses as none of them are rated to deal with that much light. Even if a pair is rated to 100% UV and 99.9% light in general, 0.01% of that much, is still enough to damage the eyes.

    I made a pair of these and they're pretty cool! Most vegetation leaves I can partially see through. Certain kinds of cloth I can partially see through. Grass very light while many objects dark, so it's easy to find lost items in the lawn. Contrary to what the video said, a clear blue sky looks completely black, not "deep blue".
    Btw, I used 4 sheets of Congo Blue and 4 sheets of Primary Red over each eye for a total of 8 sheets. It takes a few minutes for your eyes to adjust.

    • @cleric38
      @cleric38 Před 7 lety +2

      +cloudy skies Mmmmm..... No, wrong. People can see certain spectrums, not just the reflection off of objects -if not, no one would see anything except maybe a blur in between objects. As far as infared and ultraviolet, they are only dangerous at high levels -which is why the ozone layer does it for us. I have no idea what this guy is trying to do (if anything),, but blocking more ir and uv light isn't going to hurt him! You may want to check your facts more closely. That's just a note though.

    @5thDragonDreamCaster Před 6 lety +10

    Even though the visible range is quoted to be 390nm to 700nm, this isn't universal, just as the hearing range isn't universal. Although there isn't much variation from person to person, most can see up to 730nm. Some people may even be able to see as far as 800nm as a deep, blood red color. The range from 700nm to 750nm or 800nm is called the Far Red, that's what these goggles actually let you see. They block out all other visible wavelengths except the Far Red.

    I thought about doing that but then realized that these goggles would just filter out visible light. They would not make the invisible IR waves visible. If you put the filter these goggles create on a camera, then it would be able to show JUST the IR. But if you wanna see in the dark with IR, get an IR flashlight and use a camera(even the ones in cell phones work for this). the Camera can see the IR and, on the LCD display, shows it in the visible range you can see. :)

    Daniel Daigle a few comments up nailed it but also you have to realize that your eye is a lens, like a magnifying glass, so if you pupils are wide open its is worse. IR light can cause harm just the same as visible light. I have never tested it, but try covering a magnifying glass with an IR film and look at it with a camera. Focus it like as if you are burning a stick in the sunlight. That's what it can do to your eyes. Closed pupil, not enough to damage, open pupil, full effect.

      Your pupils contract in accordance to visible light. Them contracting protects them from excess light that can cause damage. Especially UV.

      I beg to differ.
      Secondly, I didn't say this was the equivalent of having real goggles; I merely indicated how it's stupid of this guy to talk about "bandwidth" and other techie-bullshit, while being unable to comprehend a simple statement in the video. Martial, I'm not sure who you are replying to, but technically, just because you put a filter in front of your eyes to filter out all but the IR band, it will not result in seeing IR light. Although it is not wise for you to look at the sun with IR glasses, your eyes aren't being exposed to anymore light than without them on.
    In fact you are being exposed to less light, particularly important, the UV light is gone.
    Even if you are wearing a 850nm camera lens over your eye, the pupil will still retract in the same manner as if it were exposed to normal light.

    Kipkay, there is an easier way. You know those Real D 3D glasses?
    1. Find 2 glasses.(Real D 3D)
    2. Take off lens.
    3.If you take one of each and put them on top of each other you can view infared light.
    If it doesn't work, try different combinations.

    Human eye can see a tiny bit of NIR (around 700-750nm) and you can also see the IR leds glowing slightly red in security cameras when your eyes are adjusted to the darkness. I tried this with a piece of plastic which is opaque in visible light but transparent in IR. It worked but it was very dim, you could barely see at all :-)

    Ricardo, While it DOES create the low pass filter and cut out most visible light, it does NOT make the IR 'light' visible to us. The filters are in no way changing the IR 'light' to visible light, thus, these are worthless for 'seeing' IR. Don't believe it? Build them and then use them to look into a TV remote while you press buttons. Then do this to a digital camera and see the difference. You can see the IR only in the LCD display of the camera, NOT through the goggles.(wish I was wrong)

    I wouldn't know what to do with those goggles. But I've successfully used the same well-known recipe (3 layers of Congo Blue and 1 of Primary Red) in order to block the direct flash of a point-and-shoot camera, yet allow the IR light to trigger a slave flash. Yes, you can go Strobist / Joe McNally with a point-and-shoot too.

    However your eyes can not see infrared cameras are usually able to see infrared. If u using a camera you can remove infrared blocking filter to allow IR to pass trough of u can use long exposures if u still have IR blocking filter. Trough a camera you will be able to see IR leds.
