RDR1 VS RDR2 Map Changes Over Time 1907 to 1911 Blackwater
Red Dead Redemption 2 is a western-themed action-adventure video game developed and published by Rockstar Games. Set in a fictional recreation of the American Old West in 1899, Red Dead Redemption 2 focuses on the life of Arthur Morgan and his position in the notorious Van der Linde gang. The game follows the gang's decline as they are pursued by lawmen, fellow gangs and Pinkerton agents. The narrative revolves around the characters of Dutch van der Linde, John Marston and Micah Bell in addition to Morgan.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is set in an open world consisting of five American regions, which the player can explore as they proceed with the story, and can be played through both third-person and first-person view. As Arthur Morgan, players can interact with the game world in several ways, including story missions, side quests, challenges, randomized events, and hunting. An Honor system, returning from the previous game, changes accordingly to the player's actions towards non-player characters.
This video may contain video game simulated graphic violence which some viewers may find it disturbing.

its weird to think that this was only a few years before WW1

What about the sinking of the titanic 👀

To me it just doesnt make sense to have all these brick buildings in 1907, and then 4 years later "tear them down" and replace them with wooden ones.
Update: Holy crap 1k likes? Thanks yall!
That is exactly what I was thinking
Guessing they didn't bother to go back and look at the first game when making the second beyond some stock images
Honestly it looks way better in rdr2, I think they wanted to make everything less generic and more realistic.
Maybe the new Mayor was from Armadillo or Thieves Landing and preferes 70 % Old school Wild West feel ?
@@RafaelPereira-dc9ir that would be an entertaining thought to picture lol
For some reason the graphics of the first game actually makes it look like time has passed everything just feels.... older
because of the colors
rdr1 had a different art style i like it more in my opinion
@@adriank3629 It fits more with the old west
Yeah for me it looks dead
It feels older and less taken care of tbh
So in four years:
The losses:
Everything downgraded from brick to wood.
A lot of Edwardian style was lost in the down grade.
The working class dwellings became more squaller.
The fairground is now overgrown and trashy.
They tore down half the town to build half as many buildings.
The gains:
The photographer got what was coming to him.
They got a motor car now. with four flats.
The state square looks alright.
Damn why do you guys hate the photographer so much
What’s wrong with the photographer?

No u re not sir. A bit disturbing tho
Rockstar didn't do their homework.
Some buildings also gets smaller
ikr- it’s like they downgraded the homes? 😭
@@happyratto2601 If it’s an different Mayor prob ?
RDR 1 had a cinematic, dark old western visual, it's themes were more traditional and the game shined on New Austin and Nuevo Paraiso, towns were much smaller to fit the scale of the player(Saint Denis would have look much smaller in RDR1 too)
RDR 2 was more focused on realism and the build up theme of civilization, so cities felt much more alive, constant, oppressive and evolving while towns like tumbleweed, armadillo, strawberry and even valentine seemed to be stuck in time, taking on the heavy toll of the changing times.
That considered, i don't see much of a point on criticizing the difference between two different art styles.
Guys, RDR2's is clearly a reimagining of the town and not literally how it was 4 years prior to RDR1. Their art department has evolved and it shows.
I like how you think
Yeah exactly, just like how John's default outfit was reimagined. They could have gone for an intentional look to RDR1 but they chose not to.
Still puts a blunder to the experience
@@ClaytonTheCracker yeah but the original blackwater was ugly af
@@Cotif11 the new one lacks many important structures, no I don't mean the bank and federal building those are obviously not built yet, I mean the Chandelier above the film theatre, multiple buildings now have different openings, the Saloon is drastically different. The hotel is a mess, yadadadada
I think the city was burn't down so they rebuilt it, and is why some things look rebuilt.
Why?
No they just made it outa wood and then realised it was too unmodern for Blackwater, I assume wooden buildings are no longer cannon
@@Mikey-zk5wc there would've been a lot of wooden buildings in western America in the mid 1800s or (at most) the late 1800s but by 1907 most of the land had been civilised and nearly all of it had been organized into states with proper cities that consisted of mostly brick buildings. There's no way there would still be large settlements in RDR1 with mostly wooden buildings like Armadillo.
I'm really going to miss that blackjack table where the piano starts playing in RDR.

It would’ve been a nice detail if RDR 2 showed the construction of the west Elizabeth railway, because it seems like a bit of a stretch to have it from completely non existent to completely finished in just 4 years. I feel like Blackwater station and the whole train line would’ve taken longer to build than just 4 years. That’s just my opinion.
Sometimes, especially with Rockstar, deadlines come in the way and things have to be rushed
Yeah your right although in 1907 you can see work has started on masons bridge (new Austin to great plains rail bridge)

It’s great to see these comparisons! 👍👍👍
I loved RDR2's Blackwater. In RDR it feels empty and unnecessarily dark
I preferred it since it’s meant to illustrate the dying west by using ominous ambient music and duller colors. Whereas when you go to New Austin or Mexico, things feel more lively and upbeat since it represents the old west, a time that John so desperately wants to go back to.
No, it is not dark in RDR1. Actually if you remember what the extreme sunny weather in RDR1 looks like you wouldn't say that. In RDR1 sometimes the sun is extremely strong, and thr lighting is so natural and realistic. But there is actually no such effect in RDR2. In RDR2, the grass field and woods look nicer, but the desert is just all art filter.
And I don't know if you have played RDR1, but if you have, you'd remember that there are all kinds of noises and side conversations going on in RDR1's towns or city. It's not empty at all.
@@flamingmonkey7712 I've played and completed the game a few months ago, it did not age well. Most of the time it looks bland and darkish, but that's because RAGE was still in its "early" steps. I love how things look natural in RDR2. There are very few times RDR looks good and natural. I am not bashing on it as I really like the game, but I am not a fan of its graphics style
@@DJ_Thanos exactly, that's what I was thinking when I played rdr1 for the first time a few years ago. The game is just too old to look nice.
I honestly kinda prefer the look of RDR1 somewhat. Sells the bleak atmosphere more.
Me too. I love that Rockstar was able to make West Elizabeth feel like the end of an era. You have people hunting down the last of the Buffalo in the region, ominous piano music, and a darker color tone. Not to mention that when riding in Tall Trees you hear some of the Cochinay music play from Dutch’s hideout.

Yeah, like houses are completely changing size and color, doesn’t really make much sense
Probably a little hard to create the town exactly like it was
It's almost more of a remaster of Blackwater in dr2, making everything look more realistic than a box with windows.
@@lumbagoboi1649 yea I’d say that’s the best explanation
I mean 4 years in the early 1900s was a good bit, life expectancy wasn’t very high and times were changing everyday. Storms come and knock stuff down, people want to remodel, and life changes.
Love your vids and 2atch your live streams
I'm surprised just how different things actually are. Some differences are clearly due to buildings and landmarks not being developed yet, but a lot of it is just totally different. It seems like in most cases they just added more details and embellishments. Going through the town I could sense that some things weren't exactly the same, but it did feel like the same place. The only difference that really threw me off was the lack of the sort of awning/porch area in front of the saloon/inn. It's one of the few places that I think were genuinely more interesting in the original.
It's called a prequel, and for a prequel, I think Rockstar did a good job at portraying how Blackwater should have looked in 1911 as a more modern town. You could also explain it as the fire of Blackwater or something. I do like rdr too though.

I really like how you can see the advancement of Blackwater into a more and more civilized city. Not even just with respects to the BOI building but also many of the smaller buildings.
You can see many of them are focused towards "simpler" things like farming supplies in 1907 and then in 1911 you have automobile tunes and tires, insurance brokers, a law building etc.
Really interesting to see that focus shift in that short time.
CZcams knows I’ve been having an itch for another play through when they put these in my recommended
I know this video is a comparison between games, but the evolution of the buildings and world in RDR2 is one of the coolest aspects of the game. I genuinely think that's the future of open-world games.
Ight its wierd watching the live chat replays becsuse i just typed in them
Blackwater had more "wild west" theme in Red Dead Redemption.
I personally prefer RDR2 because it gave the city a more modern civilized architecture just like a city should be.
I thought it was second biggest
Awesome didn't realize this much changed
this is very nice!
Honestly, it looks like after the epilogue there was a kind of war or bombing and they had to reconstruct the entire town in that 4 years
did blackwater just tear down every building and made it all out of wood?
I never noticed the "van horn" and "wapiti" streets being used in rdr2 lol
Because of rdr2 and possibly 3, it just naturally needs a remastered 1.
Since the games took place from 1899 to 1914 I wonder what do you bet what Blackwater would look like right now in 2021 for me I vote it would be their worlds version of the city of Houston of Texas
Well, damn. Here I thought it was mostly the same, but they actually changed almost everything.
And it goes beyond "fewer houses because it was years earlier".
I think what’s cool is you can tell the other parts of the map exist somewhat. In rdr 1 they’re just further away it seems

I known RDR1 came out years before they were going to release a second game which is probably the reason why Blackwater looks more of a western outpost or whatever rather then a small town. hopefully if they come out with a RDR1 remaster where they could keep most of the brick buildings but also have some progression of the towns infrastructure like the new town hall, houses, police building and the train station.
It’s crazy to think how bad things were. It just feels depressing, that the “old times” were going away. And the new age is coming in. Leaving all the history behind, in the throws of time…

Hey Marston! Remember what we were like in higher definition?
It's weird how they tore down some brick buildings just to build a wooden version of the same building. (Theatre, photographer.)
Doesn’t the photographer look awful? In 1911
Nearly everything changed in 4 years. I like to think a massive fire burnt out much of the town, so they decided to rebuild everything in a more western setting.
Fire burned the brick buildings, so they were replaced with wood
Just look at rdr 1 graphics salute to Rockstar for making these 2 masterpieces
black water in 1899 and 1907 with the Victorian and Edwardian brick architecture. And then black water in rdr1 wood buildings and few brick buildings. In my theory probably blackwater had a hurricane and it destroyed some of the buildings probably in 1909. so they just rebuilt and that's how it looks like now in 1911/1914
1907 blackwater overall is better, but for some reason I love the town square SO much in rdr1 that’s it’s my favorite town in both of the rdr games
They did excellent job with remaking Blackwater and making it almost like in original.
I wonder how Blackwater will look in RDR3.
If they do another remake, then that would be 2nd time.
Unless they add more buildings on the side.

A remake of the first game would be more than welcome.
I don't think theres a cannon explanation of how it changed so much in 4 years i personally think its just because they wanted to change the art style for rdr2 and its more of a "blackwater reimagined" rather than actual continuity

Blackwater looks very grand in 1907 but by 1911, everything is very shoddy and oversimplified. For example, the little red building that’s made of bricks at 4:40 turns into a white building with wood, and it’s literally called “Blackwater Restaurant”.
