I want to run through the halls of my high school
I want to scream at the

I just found out there's no such thing as the real world
Just a lie you've got to rise above

‘All of our parents - they’re getting older , I wonder if they wished for anything better’. We did kids. We most certainly did 💜
2024 here 😌
Oh yeah🫶🏼
I'm his age. I now have a teenager in High School. He doesn't quite fit in. Sometimes it's hard convincing him his best years are to come. I introduced him to this song, hoping it would help inspire him.
Tell your teenager this: “They laugh at me because I’m different. I laugh at them because they’re all the same.”
@@brittanymichelle8618 I doubt that will make him feel better
@@brittanymichelle8618 haha! :)
Good luck! :)
His best years are to come, and when it passes. You’ll soon miss it. 😭
I heard this song on the radio on my first day of high school and loved it. Today I'm listening to it because in a couple of hours I graduate from high school...
Congratulations on your achievement 😊👌
Great job Oscar! Keep at it, there is a whole lot more to do. :)
Lana v Relax your acting like your being deployed to Iraq or something lol
Honestly it get ALO'T better if you MAKE it better
If you don't like something, CHANGE it! Want more friends?! Make some and get out of your comfort zone and learn more about yourself and others
Want to have better grades? Be more postive, motivated and determine while working hard and asking for help when you need to and you should surely pass with an A
Basically life is what you make it
Not liking something? Change it and make it better! That's life in general too, NOT just High School lol
Be curious, learn and be yourself
Best advice i can give you lol :]
Congrats Oscar!
From a 42 year old dude, I can say without a doubt that "the best of me was hiding up my sleeve"
Hopefully yours is too!
UPDATE: it's been 5 months, life is looking up, and I'm ready for what's to come :)

Every time I hear this song I think of my childhood. Sucks how fast it went. But you got to appreciate every second of life.
+Peyton Cooper Hey Peyton!! i literally just searched this song up because i was thinking of my childhood also! such good memories with no care in the world right! peace :)

Hope you're having a nice life man
2 years later ..... hope your journey is great man.
bro i'm almost 40 and i only found myself (who and what i wanted to be) last year and what an amazing journey it has been. i dont think i can say i've lived my life to the fullest if i had found myself earlier. i have tried anything and everything. might not have loved everything and some were absolute mistakes but glad that i went there and tried it. take your time. life's not a race. take the time to be in the moment and to reflect and reminisce sometimes :)
Well, you will get a lot further in life if you work on your grammar n shit😁
you will be alright - God willing - Sending you love and light
I always play this song whenever I visit my hometown of Fayetteville NC. 71st high school c/o 2002. I miss those days.
I didn’t realize it but this song was released the week I graduated high school. I do remember listening to it throughout the summer before college in 2001. Then 9/11 hit only a few weeks of freshman year college. Crazy how time flies and seeing how much this world changed. Whoever you are live your life and love the ones who always supported you no matter what.
I am invincible as long as I'm alive
i love songs that celebrate life in general, not just loving someone
well said
Me too, this song is so perfect for life when you figure out the real meaning of it. (Live life the way you want to).
A lot of the songs on this album, isn’t just about love, it’s nice
John Mayer's lyrics are generally about life, love is a part of it and it comes along sometimes. Born and Raised is I think his lyrically best work.
John has a unique sound, instrumental and voice with distinct lyrics.
Sat an iHop diner at 6am the other morning by myself. This came on while I was eating. It was so quiet. Hadn't heard it in years.
2024! Still ❤
this was my shit in high school.
dont get me wrong buddy.. but never thought a black guy would listen to John Mayer's music :/
i'm sure there are a lot of people of all races that love him. please try and forget skin color. that does not dictate who a person is.
of course not!! our skin color would never dictate our taste in music or who we are.. good thing we both agree that this song is THE shit tho XD
lol *high five*
jose mares I'm honestly not surprised. This might be taken as racist but some (I certainly don't) but Mayer's music is heavily based on genres listened mostly in it's essence by black people.
Regardless, likes aren't defined by races.
One of the best songs ever made.
Yes because he is telling the truth, most of everything we think we know is a lie. Belief is the enemy of knowing.
@@williamjones7604 ditto
Life truths inside pretty song 🤩
haha :) i think so too :)
Eh, that’s a little strong
Sounds like adults tried to intimidate John with of mention of the “real world” when he was a kid.
“Put down that guitar. That guitar ain’t gonna get you anywhere when you’re older... when you hit the REAL WORLD.”
Turns out there’s no such thing.
Honestly, sounds like my mom. Said that all the stuff I'm good at will just be hobbies, maybe or maybe not mom. My choice, not yours.
Every artist will learn this if they decide to pursue what they were born with.
John is one of the best and smartest artists out there.
This is a beautiful song but it’s also a declaration of truth. One of my all time favorites
Specially the "I am invincible part"
Yes
Ouh, that's what it means tho 🤔
Okay 👍🏽 thanks friend
This song hits a little harder every year.
This is John's best song in my opinion
First Name Last Name I agree
I'd be honored if some old-school John Mayer fans would check out my acoustic piano & vocal covers of CLARITY and LOVE SOON on my channel in tribute to the boss. Live acoustic with no digital editing. Thanks and peace.

Have u heard new light?
This is the best John Mayer tbh. Pure honesty and humility
I wanna scream at the TOP OF MY LUNGS!!!!! Its 2023 & JM just rocks this song. Amazzzing!
they love to tell you stay inside the lines, but somethings better on the other side. gets me all the time
From a guitar/music student perspective, this a wonderful song for a beginner to study to start reaching for that intermediate level. Jazzy chords, tricky strumming, rhythmic hits, complex progressions...great stuff!
Please elaborate I’m at that level & would love to hear your insight, been playing for years (guitar /keyboard) I’ve learned to play some of his songs but this is one that I always have difficulty learning.
@@homerg2724 There’s generally three reasons why something is tricky to play. One is the obvious it’s fast or precise…technically hard to play. This song doesn’t really fall into that category. Next is a difficult rhythm…this song definitely has a lot going rhythmically. Syncopated strumming and hits and it goes to half time at one point. What’s most difficult about the song is the form…it has a lot of chords and if you don’t understand their function they will almost seem random. You’re in E but then it goes to Emin, then to F#7, the chorus starts on Amin, and if you don’t know the role of each chord it it’s enough to make your head spin. What I mean by chord function is the number system is I major, vi min, II maj, etc. Here in Nashville we write them with regular numbers and not Roman numerals but i digress! The chorus is A min D7 Emaj or iv bVII I. For us music school geeks( and John was certainly one of them) that’s known as a back door ii V, a cadence often seen in jazz tunes. As soon as we hear the chorus we know the flavor of the cadence and the exactly what those chords are. Every part of the song has a recognizable chord progression if you you understand theoretically what’s going on. If you don’t get the theory it will require lots of memorization on top of the tricky rhythm…making it really hard to play.
I’ve been teaching over 20 years now(damn it can’t really be that long!). Let me know if you’d like to do a lesson…we could break down all the chords, analyze them etc!
Wth are you talking about? This is an extremely difficult song, way beyond intermediate. No beginner could even attempt something like this. The chord progression is very complicated and the rhythm is tricky. I bet you can't play it.
@@reesecup3ify I’m actually the wrong person to challenge. How much do you want to bet? I’d bet 100k if you’re willing…I know you won’t so I’ll send you a video anyway. Don’t assume just because someone is posting on the internet that they don’t know what they’re doing.
We clearly have a different definition of what beginner, intermediate, etc is but I’ll admit I was probably wrong and that it’s closer to advanced. Most importantly it’s a great song for an aspiring student.
I’ll still take that bet if you want.
Correct! This is one of my first songs as a beginner. To be fair, it was the strumming, palm muting, and tough chords that got me. Its not hard… but their are several gaps you need to fill. Squirrelly user is a absolutely incorrect. If you could read a tab, know basic chords, and basic strumming, this is easily attainable.
Just graduated!!!!!
Followed John Mayor's advice and ran through the halls of my highschool screaming "there's no such thing as the real world!"
Now I'm in a mental hospital. Thanks JOHN.
I don't think that was meant to be taken literal.
😂😂😂
This song speaks the truth but still a good oldie
"I am invincible as long as I'm alive"
Good stuff man. John Mayer is also hot af
So much truth in this song....please, kids, don't let your teachers, etc, limit you...the best of you is truly still up your sleeve (I say this as a 46-y/o fart!).
Thank you :)
"they love to tell you to stay inside the lines"____ :/. I still remember when I wrote the paper. And that teacher editor said ," you never ask an adult why." Bish, what? What world do you even come from the youth can't even ask why anymore? I'd insert a why song here but I forgot it :/
lol
Aww, are you still a good guy or are you tainted by the world? have you given up.

+MrTungtarung Yeah music book of Room For Squares damn near fell into my lap recently, and as a novice theorist, I gotta say he's damn good, I may not care much for his music but I respect him, and his musical ability.
+MrTungtarung This is one of the best all-around pure pop songs in the last 25 years. I'm glad you hear it too! Chords are amazing.
indeed. one of the few "rock" musicians injecting interesting extended intervals in their music. He particularly likes the 9th interval, which provides a soulful tone compared to basic major/minor chords. also there's some 11th and 13th interval chords too. too classy

I was in 1st grade when this came out and hoped it would be played as my graduation song. That didn't happen when I walked on stage of course...because it was 11 years later. But I did play it that morning while I was getting ready to go to the ceremony ( in 2012 ) ☺☺
This was out when I graduated in '02
I'll miss high school somewhat but right now I just can't wait to be done with it. Class of 2020. This song brings me back to 7th grade when I first heard it and loved it
Me too.
I feel the same way.
IM SHOCKED THIS SONG HAS ONLY 15 MILLION VIEWS??
It’s June of 2005, I’m a junior in high school, full of teenage angst, stressing about finals, got acne and stressing about life after high school going into my final year of high school.
I don’t have a car yet, and mom is giving me a ride to school. We pull into a coffee shop parking lot, and she runs in to order some drinks. This song comes on the radio. Im in the moment, thinking about adulthood, responsibilities, life after high school and just life in general. Life is good, and I didn’t realize just how good I had it, as most kids that age don’t. It’s the last REAL and Authentic time I spend with my mom. She didn’t physically die or anything, but when you’re a dependent, things are different. So in a way that part of her is just a memory. Just like the moments of childhood.
If you’re still in high school and reading this, as a 34 year old now, enjoy every moment you have. Those 4, short years go by you fast! You blink, and it’s over. Make the most of it while you have it.
Anyone listening during Covid 19 pandemic
Yep, lots of us. I want everyone to hear it.

Too bad I won’t have my graduation😔
Me
I remember being 6 years old when this song released. My brother and I shared a room and we always left the radio on at night. We were on summer vacation and would challenge each other to stay up all night. This song would come on constantly and I never become tired of it. Now it's a piece of my childhood and is full of so much nostalgia... I still love John Mayer and his music.
This is weird but I did the same thing. Fell asleep every night with the radio down on low and this song would always come on when I was little. So relaxing and brings back the best memories.
faraeons12 I would also fall asleep to the radio when I was little (lol I still do oops its relaxing)

I’m 25 and I used to hear this song, your body is a wonderland, and daughters all the time when I was 6 years old on the radio. So glad I discovered John’s music again. So much nostalgia and even his newer music is super good too. Dude never disappoints me.
Awesome 🔥 I’m a new fan, I heard some of his songs when I was younger also, now I’ve listened to every album by him 😳😂
John Mayer just released Last Train Home in the past month. John Mayer is the Eric Clapton of our generation. If you listen to Last Train Home that song sounds a decade older than No such thing. John Mayer is kicking off the early 1990's reboot/retro in this decade.
Same but I’m now 26😭. Time flies…
Almost 24 now. Felt the same way after rediscovering his music back in 2018
FORREAL!!!! Pure nostalgia
Been looking for this gem for a while now. At first I asked myself "could this one be it?" then internal tears of joy were shed.
My favorite John Mayer song
I know that feeling 😂
This is mine and my wife's favorite song.
To all of those that were in high school when this song was released like me I'd like to say....."20 year reunion"
This is the ultimate inspirational song when transitioning from high school/teenage years into young adulthood. All 17/18 year olds should listen. When ur older this song will bring hella memories 💯
🥲
Why do I love this song? Because as a grown ass man, i still remember the come what may fearlessness of this moment in youth. Who wasn't unformed and still discovering the best of ourselves? Who wasn't still waiting for the amazing to happen? So this is why I'm reminded of Steely Dan, Beastie boys, chaka khan and all the great songs of a faraway youth. The tunes were with me as I found the best moments. Moments I couldn't even imagine in high school but desired more than that girl in chemistry, The beauty in chorus. I knew i would show them eventually.
this is my fav chill song
1999 used to listen to this all the time when I was 22 , not a care in the world, drivin all over the bay area. Sucks being 46 now

This song made me cry senior year 2002. Now in 2020. I still think the real world is a lie, but I haven't risen above all the way yet.
Edit: class of 2002 where are you at?
John mayer is underrated
No he isnt.....hes on the radio constantly.....news flash...
Studman Longnuts he is definitely not garbage, born and raised is really good
Studman Longnuts Not entirely sure what you're talking about, dude. I just saw JM in Philly last week and he was fantastic. Go and see him live once. His life performances have absolutely no justice on his songs recorded in studio.
Vicky K yes!!! I was there as well.. I honestly started crying when he sang Why Georgia... He's fucking amazing.
Nash Padilla I lost it during Slow Dancing. That sounds so cliche because everyone loves that song. But that song has such significance to me because I've been in that situation so it is close to my heart. He's unreal. I'm still in shock and awe from the concert. Cannot wait to see him again.
I'm Leigh Anna Reyes'. I've always loved his music, and it's great. I love him too, ever so much. He sings and plays the guitar great.
Woow! Nostalgic high school days John Mayer songs very special
I’ll never forget the moment I heard this on the radio in 2002. I was hooked and had to figure out who sang it.
I’d never heard anything like it. The bridge. The lyrics. The clear jazz influences.
Almost 20 years later, I’m proud to say I have seven John Mayer concerts to my name.
[Verse 1]
"Welcome to the real world", she said to me
Condescendingly
Take a seat
Take your life
Plot it out in black and white
Well I never lived the dreams of the prom kings
And the drama queens
I'd like to think the best of me
Is still hiding
Up my sleeve
[Pre-Chorus]
They love to tell you
Stay inside the lines
But something's better
On the other side
[Chorus]
I want to run through the halls of my high school
I want to scream at the
Top of my lungs
I just found out there's no such thing as the real world
Just a lie you've got to rise above
[Verse 2]
So the good boys and girls take the so called right track
Faded white hats
Grabbing credits and
Maybe transfers
They read all the books but they can't find the answers
And all of our parents
They're getting older
I wonder if they've wished for anything better
While in their memories
Tiny tragedies
[Pre-Chorus]
They love to tell you
Stay inside the lines
But something's better
On the other side
[Chorus]
I want to run through the halls of my high school
I want to scream at the
Top of my lungs
I just found out there's no such thing as the real world
Just a lie you've got to rise above
[Bridge]
I am invincible
I am invincible
I am invincible
As long as I'm alive
[Chorus]
I want to run through the halls of my high school
I want to scream at the
Top of my lungs
I just found out there's no such thing as the real world
Just a lie you've got to rise above
[Outro]
I just can't wait til my ten year reunion
I'm going to bust down the double doors
And when I stand on these tables before you
You will know what all this time was for
Thx for this...I sang to the top of my lungs!
Dude, you just saved my life-

I really miss the old days so much. I was young happy free. What great times this was. Lol.
John is one of my biggest inspirations and this song is my childhood haha. He's the one who inspired me to start playing guitar and street performing in Philadelphia. I'm going to audition for The Voice in two days, and it would mean so much to me if you would check out my most recent cover and let me know what you think! My friends and family don't really know that I sing and play, so I would love any feedback I can get... still trying to decide an audition song!
Keep singing, playing, smiling, and laughing everyone! :D
This may be the greatest song ever made, I am invincible!

I remember the first time hearing this song. Driving at 4am after work in Dallas in 2002, with the DJ saying he was like Dave Matthew's. He was way off and way wrong.
This song is inspiring! I still get emotional hearing it. No such thing came out my first year of college and it was also the year I became a comitted christian. Lyrics were so freeing!
