  • In this episode of FilmFuns, we explain over-simplistically how one score takes the melody of another. In this case, it's Kingdom of Heaven's score taken from The 13th Warrior.

A great ode to Goldsmith from Gregson-Williams. Goldsmith had died in 2004 before this film was released. I really thought it was a breath of fresh air and a wonderful nod to a legendary composer. Plus, I mean, come on... The 13th Warrior score is juuuust legendary.

For a number of inside reasons (lots of studio and set infighting), The 13th Warrior bombed, and bombed so badly that it was pretty much cursed in the industry. You can read about the drama elsewhere, but the upshot was that no one wanted to be anywhere near that film, even though it's really good.
Due to the drama, Goldsmith wasn't even nominated for that year's Oscar for Best Score, when (IMHO) he should have won it handily. I think it's likely that the group from Kingdom of Heaven thought it was a shame that the soundtrack was ignored through no fault of its own, and wanted to give it a second chance.

I didn't even bother to check if it was a different composer, I immediately assumed that it was lifted wholesale from 13th Warrior, when I heard it in Kingdom of Heavens.

Goldsmith died that year. It was a homage to him.

I remember when I saw this movie. The music is gorgeous, but the Valhalla music threw me. I was sitting there like "Wait. That's Valhalla. That's from 13th warrior! THAT'S FROM 13TH WARRIOR!" and I was just astounded when I realized that they actually put a theme from another movie into it. Now, mind you, honestly, the music is a great match for the scene and you probably couldn't have found a better homage to the feeling of desperation and defiance than that music, but it's still pretty lazy.

I have never seen the 13th warrior
It's on the list of movies I have to see
Now that I know that one of my favourite musics of one of my favourite movies ever comes from it, it moved really up in the list :p

I don´t think it´s lazy. Also the iconic pirates of the Caribbean song is from Gladiator. If the composer has to write a song that has a certain emotion in it, I don´t see a reason why he should not use something from his previous compositions, if it has the sound he needs. It´s like trying to reinvwnt the wheel. Plus, I really think that sometimes directors use soundtrack from different movies to pay them homage. You know, it could have been pivotal movie in their career or something and they wanted to acknowledge it.

It’s the same track, the reason being they needed music since the Kingdom of Heaven scene is actually a deleted scene and never intended for wide distribution.

These aren't different scores. It's the same track, much like how "The Crow Descends" by Graeme Revell also makes an appearance in Kingdom of Heaven. Look at the end credits and see that Jerry Goldsmith is credited for the track "Valhalla".

If you fall Ridley Scott at all, you should know that he was Jerry Goldsmith's biggest fan. Kind of like Chris Nolan and Hans Zimmer collaborate now, Ridley Scott loved working with Jerry Goldsmith. Jerry Goldsmith until his death considered the score he wrote for Scott in the movie Legend to be his best work. Didn't surprise me for one second that a Jerry Goldsmith would be borrowed by Ridley Scott. Scott even had a reprise of Jerry Goldsmith's original score for Alien in Covenant.

The music towards the end of the movie (final battle day 2) reminds me of gladiator… the opening battle in Germania (or maybe the recreation of the battle of cartridge in the colleseum…). I came here because I noticed the 13th warrior rip off. Now I’m wondering what else they took. :/
