I don't think that anyone feels that the games on the 'Cube were bad. It's the console itself that was bad.
Developers didn't like the mini-discs, so they didn't want to develop for the Gamecube. No developers means no 3rd party support. No 3rd party support means not as many games, and not as many customers.
Nintendo and others pumped out a lot of great games for the console. They kinda had to in order to keep the console alive.

The Luigi solo game for the SNES was called "Mario Is Missing" it was an educational game.
That gag was that I was denying the existence of MIM because it was so bad. That's why I showed the box art for the game on the screen.

Just because a game is controversial doesn't mean that it's bad. When Wind Waker was first announced, people were incredibly skeptical about the graphical style. Many had very negative reactions to it.
In that group of games I mentioned was Metroid Prime. That is, like, my favorite video game of all time. It's a masterpiece. But the initial idea of Metroid from a first person perspective cause a lot of controversy.

Super Smash Bros Melee, SM Sunshine, Sonic Adventure DX, Sonic Adventure Battle, METROID PRIME.
I the GC was the coolest thing ever, it just didn't sell as many units as the other nintendo consoles, and it was over shadowed by the PS2 and XBOX 360.
Super Mario Sunshine was actually a really great game. I wish more people would appreciate it. With as much as people complain about the video game industry never innovating they're incredibly harsh on titles that do innovate.

Nintendo was at no risk of dying out when Donkey Kong came to be. Another interesting tidbit hidden in history. He didn't develop Donkey Kong. An outside company was hired to make the game. He just came up with the basic concept.
Did he say they were? It wasn't even their first arcade game. Heck, part of the reason for the creation of Donkey Kong was to repurpose a previous arcade game. And Donkey Kong was originally going to be a licensed Popeye game, with Donkey Kong being Bluto.

And Shigeru Miyamoto admitted that Doki Doki Panic was originally suppose to be a Mario game with vertical instead of just horizontal movement. It became D.D. Panic, but when a new american mario game was needed, Miyamoto remembered what D.D. Panic was originally intended as and Super Mario Bros. 2 was born

He said Galaxy was the first 3D game to get a direct sequel. New wasn't counting the 2D games.

For the record though, DK didn't "literally" save nintendo. It began their rise into übermonehz (technical term I believe :D) but they already had not only successful ventures unrelated to video games (seriously, it's almost comical how diverse their business ventures were), but also a successful Game and Watch series and the highest selling pong console of the 70's to their name.
That was a fun observation about the games of the gamecube generation all being controversial... I still find that odd as I found all the games you mentioned to be excellent.

Least successful doesn't mean bad. It simply means that the GC didn't sell as many units as the other main Nintendo home consoles (NES, SNES, N64, and Wii). Nor did it's sale reach the levels of Sony & Microsoft's respective consoles.
I LOVE the gamecube. I grew up on it and some of my favorite games of all time are on it. Wind Waker, Starfox Adventures, Smash bros Melee, METROID PRIME!!!
Unfortunately, it just did not sell as well as the Playstation, Xbox, or the other Nintendo consoles.

I honestly really loved Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, they were my favorite Mario game of all time, and I really hope they make a 3rd one. Because 2 wasn't enough.

I'm pretty sure the Virtual Boy was Nintendo's least successful console. Selling only 700,000 units and only having 14 games made for it.

You forgot a bit at the beggining. In the first Mario game's development stage (early) Mario had a gun. A to shoot, B to dash. This was said in a Nintendo times magazine.
