Diecast Restoration: Matchbox Saab Sonett III. Welcome back to Diecast Resurrection here we specialize in painting diecast model cars. Today we did a restoration on a Matchbox No36 Saab Sonnet III, we custom matched the paint and did our best! She turned out real nice, have a look for yourself and leave a like! Just wanted to pop in and say your channel actually helped me in a pinch. My foreman wanted me to paint some sections of pipe, nothing fancy, just a glossy black. So he leaves me with the sprayer, paint, thinner, and leaves. I've never used a sprayer before, not even mixed paint to use with a sprayer. But I remember that this channel said it was supposed to have a consistency like milk. So I did that. It wasn't a huge deal, I suppose, but this channel actually came to the rescue. Thanks for all the great work!
In my late 20's I had the misfortune to become a "SAAB Certified Technician" - a free course that ended with a good paying job (rare find for a Vet in the 70's). Further lowering my ego I was assigned the title AND function of "Regional Sonnet III Specialist". In Sweden I would have been a celebrity. Here, I might as well have been wearing a clown costume. I was bullied about my job. But NOW, after you have elevated the SAAB Sonnet III to celebrity status, my SAAB days have gone from embarrassment to PRIDE. Thanks, man.

Some day, when I'm done restauring my old gi joes to their former glory (and getting my grabby hands on all those I couldn't buy as a kid), I'll get around to working on my old cars.
I collected matchboxes as a kid and still own this exact model from back in the day.
YO, this gave me massive "cell shaded" vibes in the thumbnail. Ever seen that style of painting? they paint them in a way where they look like cartoons, the effect would go REALLY well with smth like this.
There's a bunch of transformers ones, if you wanna check it out, would probably be fun to try and a very unique look!

The next time you want to bring the color back from a piece of plastic soak it in tire dressing and then spray it with plastidip. You let it sit for a couple of days and when you peel off the plastidip the color will return like it’s new. Other methods can be to polish it as you did and then heat the piece with a hairdryer. The high heat will activate the polymer and bring it to the surface… Just a few tips from my own restoration projects.
As a fellow saab enthusiasts/owner, I have this casting and I also have the red saab 9000 turbo matchbox casting. Glad to see these older rare cars make an appearance on your channel! I was so happy to see the notification pop up.

Love me a MB SuperFast! - I still have my 1983 catalog from when I was a kid along with generic case of 48 Matchbox and Hot Wheels. Didn't really get much for Christmas - I did get a nice bottle of real maple syrup aged in bourbon barrels. The coolest Christmas present I'd ever gotten was an Evil Knievel stunt cycle - I think it was in either 1976 or '77.

Another unique and really cool Matchbox Superfast casting. I have no idea as to why I like these castings so much. The suspension is wicked, and it gives them a to intense stance. Also those huge tires gives it a badass look!

For that hatch cover, hitting it with a butane torch can bring back the color on some plastics.

Nice Saab! Just a hint on the gold leaf… if you use a stencil, peel it before the glue gets tacky, or it will peel the edges, giving you ragged edges on the gold leaf.
Begging for a supercharger to stick out of that hood, maybe some big slicks on the rear and fill in the hatch and put a long decal.

Great resto job on the Saab, I need to get a custom airbrush after all the money I've spent on spray cans, I could have bought one by now.
What I got for Christmas? A $50 Ebay gift card, gonna purchase some items from Bright Vision and various other items to complete some projects I have.

Very nice result. I've always liked this Saab Sonet. I had one mint in box I bought from new, back in the 70's. I sold it along with others at a school fete when I was 16 for less than retail price at the time. Regret that so much now!

I don't really bother about christmas, but my brother and his partner surprised me by giving me a super nice pair of VANS (#notspon) skate shoes, (I don't skate; my bad-tempered knees stopped that years ago, but the shoes are cool), and a book about Rough Trade record stores, and the Rough Trade record label - I've been buying records since 1976. Got quite a few now...
That SAAB Sonnett III was an unusual choice for a Matchbox model - it was quite a rare car in the UK, as all made were left hand drive. Pretty car, though. Your custom colour is far nicer than the original.

You can flame polish oxidation off plastic but something that small may just melt...

This is a beauty. I turned 50 last month, got the new Hot Wheels video game, which is a blast. I have this car, same color, in a car carrier I've had since I was a kid. It's in great shape because I didn't really play with it that much, I guess. Great resto, looking forward to more. Happy 2022!

I had a Tamiya subaru brat for Christmas
One trick you could have tried on the rear hatch would be a process called retrobrighting. I dunno if you’re familiar with it or not. Electronics restorers use it to bring back the luster in yellowed housings (ie computer cases, console shells, etc). It involves using UV light and hydrogen peroxide. I’m not too sure if it works on colored plastics such as that hatch, though.
I like how you try to convince us of the color before you spray it.... but we all know it's gonna be way better than the original :P HAVE MORE CONFIDENCE! :P

Well back in the day matchbox rule over hot wheels. That's in what they called super kings. Yeah hot wheels was about 60 cents,depending on where you lived. But matchbox rock with super kings. Anytime a great restorer comes a long, got to show love. Buddy you are funny, smart, and a doctor love to diecast. Knocked it out of the park. Can I get a big heck yea. Can you smell what the man is spraying. Paint on brothers.

To restore the plastic parts I've seen, people restore Tonka truck tires with a heat gun or a lighter. You should be able to find a video of someone doing it. I've seen people use a heat gun on car door panels and even seen a guy use a weed burner on stadium seats.... hope this helps 👍

A heat gun helped with my faded 4wheeler plastics just enough heat for it to change the color back but be careful it will of course melt plastic if you get it to hot.
