Converting the interior lights on my 1st Gen Tundra to LEDs

- Hey everyone, today I’m upgrading the interior lights in my 2002 Tundra to include the gauge cluster, HVAC controls, map/dome lights, and more. At the end of each section I included a picture of the panel I was working on, with a list of the lights you will need. I tried to be as concise as I could, but there is a lot of info to pass along, so the video ended up a little longer than I was expecting. If you didn't catch it in the video, 2005/06 gauge clusters have the backlights soldered in, so you can't just replace the bulbs like you can in 00-04 trucks. I hope you find it helpful, and thanks for watching! - Sal

Great video. I was planning to upgrade mine. I’m not sure if your tundra comes with it, but you didn’t mention the bulb that lights up the driver’s floor. It’s located about 4 inches southeast of the fuse box. It’s attached to a silver bracket with the bulb pointed to the front of the car.
Mine is a 04 crew cab SR5
Huh I didn't even know that was a thing! haha mine must be burnt out or I may not have it. I'll check tomorrow morning, thanks for the heads up! - Sal
What size is the bulb for the foot well?
It's a t-5 bulb 👍🏼
Good tip! I didn't even know my 1st gen Tundra had footwell lights.
I was literally about to convert my truck to LEDS and had like 4 different videos in my watch later in order to do it. This video has the information of all 4 combined and is even more thorough. Perfect!
That was the goal! I had a hard time trying to figure out what I needed to buy so wanted to streamline it for everyone else! Thanks for watching - Sal
Literally was searching your channel last night to see if you had done this. My LEDS just came in today. Just got a 2001 SR5 Tundra. Thanks Sal for all the videos, you have made this car a lot more fun and easy to work on.
Haha that's great to hear, congrats on the new truck! I'm super happy with the difference the leds made, thanks for watching - Sal
I also did the courtesy light at the driver side footwell, ‘cigarette lighter’, and ash tray. The glove box light is an easy swap by just dropping the box and liner. Not any harder than anything else shown.
Gotcha, thanks for the heads up. I did the drivers footwell one and someone else gave a tip of using a small rubber hose to pull the light out of the glovebox so you don't have to remove it. Thanks for watching! - Sal
is the foot well a t5 also?
Just picked up a 01 tundra SR5 and was looking for some info. Glade you made this video. You helped thousands of people with these videos and reviews!
That's awesome, congrats on the new truck! And I appreciate that, I'm just trying to give back to the awesome CZcams community I've learned so much from! Thanks for watching - Sal
I have put this off for so long. I now have a dark dash, it’s crazy what you get used to. I will be installing some new lights as soon as they come in. Great job thanks!
It does make a huge difference! Thanks for watching
Just ordered all of these bulbs. Thanks for doing the leg work and making it easier for us!!
For sure man! Best of luck with the installs!
This channel needs more attention. Just swapped out the taillights and replaced the fixtures and made all of the bulbs LED. Next project is fixing that damn lazy seatbelt. About to use your video as a guide for this.
I appreciate that, my seatbelt came out pretty good. If you can remove it and pressure wash it, that's probably your best bet. Soaking worked well but the pressure washer made them look like new lol thanks for watching - Sal
@@JDMDriveway seatbelt is now snapping back thanks to your other video! One additional step I found from another video- I sprayed some silicone lubricant on the belt, which seemed to help with the retraction speed.
Good 👍🏼 job and thanks for leaving all the sizes for bulbs!
For sure, thanks for watching!
Very complete , thorough review of what’s needed… super
Glad to hear it, thanks for watching!
Thanks so much for taking time to do this video. I got my stuff on order and I’m looking forward to it. Brightening up my whole truck.
Awesome, glad to hear it. Hope you're happy with the results. Thanks for watching
Terrific video! Thanks a lot! Just finished changing mine out. Took about an hour, took my time with it so as to not break anything. Had my IPad in my truck with me. Makes a BIG difference.
Awesome, glad to hear it. Thanks for watching!
I followed this video and am so happy with the results. Just wanted to say Thank You for sharing.
Sweet! That's great to hear, thanks for watching!
This video is exactly what i was looking for and you combined everything into one. Great work on this, i plan to upgrade at least my map/dome/door lights soon and I’ll update how it went!
Glad to hear it! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for providing this information. Your presentation was clean and easy to follow.
Of course! Thanks for watching - Sal
Great video. Thanks for helping me bring fresh lights to my 03 Tundra!
Awesome, glad to hear it! Thanks for watching
Great Video Sal. By far one of the best upgrades I've done to mine. It totally updates the feel of the truck inside. Don't forget the cargo and reverse lights, along with the one in the driver side footwell (Toyota didn't put one in the passenger side footwell). Those make a huge difference too. Thanks for the great content!
I've been reminded about the footwell light by a few folks now, and I didn't even know it was a thing lol Mine has been burned out since I got the truck. Cargo and backup lights are great to do too! Thanks for watching! - Sal
@@JDMDriveway I changed out the footwell light with a different LED and added one to the passenger side.
What size are the Cargo and Reverse lights good sir?
Awesome Video! Great breakdown of everything, Thank you
Thanks for watching!
Bro, thanks for these videos. I have a 2004 Tundra that I want to refresh and your content is definitely helpful.
Glad to hear it man, thanks for watching
Great video. Great instructions and details. You’re a stud! Keep posting.
Thanks George!
Nicee the white looks good! I did this to mine as well but blue dash lights and door lights I get a lot of compliments on it totally changed the feel of the truck feels way more modernized .
Yeah I agree, makes a big difference for the older vehicles. Thanks for watching - Sal
Nice !! Can I see some Pictures? Thinking of going blue
I think I've settled on blue myself for the dash and center. Are you saying you did blue in the doors too?
Appreciate your channel. Great info, love these trucks.
Thanks for watching! - Sal
I just did mostly all of my dash in my 04 Tundra with LED bulbs. Thanks, great video.
Great to hear it, thanks for watching!
Thanks for this video Sal, I'll follow suit on my 2000 before long!
I'd say it's worthwhile, the gauges look so much more crisp and modern. Thanks for watching - Sal
just did this on my '02 Sequoia. Probably the best interior upgrade you can do on the first gens
Yeah, I am so happy with how much better the gauges look. Really freshens everything up. Thanks for watching! - Sal
Another great video. I am sold and will be ordering my LED's next payday. Perfect timing since I will be installing the same radio you did I will do it all at once.. Big fan
That's great, I hope you like the lights and head unit as much as I do! Thanks for watching - Sal
Great video as usual, I did my led conversation a couple years ago but I’m not happy with the quality of the led’s. Thank you for posting the link. Keep that first Gen rocking🤘
Thanks Gus! Obviously I can't comment on the longevity of them yet, but I'm happy so far! - Sal
On my list to do. Thank you for the video.
Definitely a good upgrade! Thanks for watching - Sal
Dude, I've got an 01 Sequoia and super stoked to put these in. Appreciate the video!
Glad to hear it! Thanks for watching
Just a heads up, the T10's in the gauge cluster did not fit the 01 Sequoia
Ah bummer, thanks for the info though!
Great video, I like the details and the screenshots. Thank you
Great to hear, thanks for watching!
Perfect timing. I appreciate the video man.
Of course, thanks for watching - Sal
Great video. Best I have seen on this replacement. Thanks😊
Awesome, glad to hear it. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the vid! I have an 06, and changed out some of the interior lights. I was thinking about doing the dash cluster but not excited about soldered connections that you mentioned. I like the brightness that you have on your dash vs the very dim green OEM style I am stuck with! Truck on!!
Yeah its too bad to hear that the newer trucks aren't a simple bulb swap. Thanks for watching! - Sal
Thank you for the 2005 2006 info.
Of course, glad I could help! Thanks for watching
Yes, sucks that it’s not this easy on the 05-06. Thank you for that though Sal.
There is one at your left foot just above the parking brake , Mine was burned out and was nice to have it working again Comes on when you open the door and Lights up the foot well, I remember the one in the glove box was a pain, I had to remove the lower piece to the glove box to get access to swap mine, Same issue I had with the dome lights which were too short for me too, Nice video, Thanks for sharing,
Thanks for letting me know about the foot light one! I had no idea it was a thing because mine has always been burned out haha thank you for watching - Sal
thanks. I was reading up on this. did not think it would be this easy
Yeah, it's very straight forward. Thanks for watching
Awesome!👌 Another great installment bro.
Appreciate it! Thanks for watching - Sal
Nice job. I plan on replacing some of my interior lights in my car in the spring
Thanks! Definitely updates the feel, and is a lot brighter too. Its almost time to take her out of hibernation!
Thanks for the great video! The only snag I had was I used an OEM bulb for the drive light and it’s dim. I swapped it with the L light and it was still dim. I attempted to clean the inside with a q-tip and lens cleaner but still dim. But at least it works and the rest of the cluster is bright thanks to the LEDs. Thanks again for the video and product links.
My drive bulb is dim too, and I'm not sure why it would be like that. I thought maybe it was a poor connection with the contacts but it didn't look worn or corroded or anything. Thanks for watching!
Recognized your truck on the highway, great channel! Recently purchased an 01 tundra and found myself here 😂
Dude that's awesome! I've honestly been waiting for a subscriber to recognize the truck at some point and it totally made my day. Hope the new truck is treating you well! - Sal
Great video Sal thank you!
Thanks for watching! - Sal
I changed the Drive indicator bulb from watching this video, thanks man.
Great to hear, thanks for watching!
Great instructional info . . . thanks . . . . . first rate . . . . thanks for the help
Happy to help! Thanks for watching
I love these videos on the first gen tundras
Glad you enjoy them! Thanks for watching - Sal
Thanks for creating this. I ordered through your links.
I really appreciate that! And thank you for watching!
Great video showing most of the lights. I wanted to add that the 31mm was too large so I used a 29mm festoon instead in my 2003 SR5 AC Tundra
Gotcha, thanks for the info!
Love your channel!!’
Thanks for watching! - Sal
Thanks for your help ! Much appreciated !
Absolutely, thanks for watching!
I just last night replaced a few of my center dash lights. Tried using the green condoms on them but I tore one. So I just went white. It looks so much better and brighter! Going to pick up a bunch more bulbs today and do my instrument cluster next! As well as the last couple bulbs in the center dash as Walmart didn’t have all the bulbs I needed lol.
Edit: I got my ordered bulbs in and finished replacing them. Replaced all lights aside from the gas and airbag lights. And the drive indicators. It looks amazing now! I love it!
Awesome! Yeah and the beauty of it is you can do it little by little, and there's no rush to do it all at once. Thanks for watching! - Sal
So helpful, thank you!!
Thanks for watching! - Sal
Well done! Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Awesome video 🥳🤝
Literally the day I watched this one, my drive (D) bulb burned out and I was able to swap it. Your channel has me in a choke hold.
😂😂😂 glad the video was timely at least! Thanks for watching
NICE AND TO-THE-POINT!
That's the goal, thanks for watching!
Awesome truck
Thanks for watching!
Keep up the good work!
Thank you!
Pro tip-No one should mess with changing the lower light bulbs-like the check engine lights, or the gas light etc. if you put LED’s in those slots, they will always stay on, whether you’re low on gas or not. So just stick with the OEM bulbs for that bottom row of the gauge cluster.
Yep, I think that's a good call. I didn't swap any of those out because I didn't want to mess with any of those indicator lights. Thanks for the tip!
1st Gen tundras have gas lights? mine doesnt
@@Tatum-dafishermy first Gen has a low fuel light. Maybe your bulbs bad or you never went low..
@@Tatum-dafishersounds like it’s well fueled - good work.
We're you able to replace the mirror power switch TO LED'S..if you did can you post the video ? Anyone
appreciate the response thanks
Super awesome video
Great to hear, thanks for watching
Well... one more thing for the list... This looks easier than I thought.
Lol yeah it's not that bad, and makes a big difference. Thanks for watching!
awesome video!
Thanks for watching!
Looks great! So glad I found your channel. I recently bought a gen 1 Tundra and am loving it and want to give it some TLC. Have you thought about replacing your headlights with the new C Led headlights?
Sweet, congrats on the new truck! I've seen those headlights, but I haven't really considered getting them because I prefer the OEM+ look. Seems like a good number of people have picked them up tho! Thanks for watching - Sal
Big help. Thanks
Glad to hear it, thanks for watching
Guys, if you have an 05 sequoia, do not attempt to change the gage lights. The man is right, I took mine apart to see if I can even replace 4 or 5 lights, but found no lights period, they are soldered in. If you decide to remove it, it’s a lot of pain to put it back, but you can change the climate AC lights, there are about 11 of them including the rear air.
Thanks for confirming! I haven't had a chance to really check out a sequoia, so I could only assume it's the same as the DC. Thanks for watching
Was able to change center console to blue leds but can't change speedometer gages but truck looks nice!
Yeah it's a bummer that the newer trucks have them soldered in. I think you could replace it with a sequoia cluster which should modernize it a bit. I haven't looked into it too much but I think it's plug and play. Thanks for watching! - Sal
Gracias por tu video 👍
Thanks for watching!
Great freakin video!
Thanks for watching! - Sal
I was intrigued until the five minute mark. - 06 owner. 🤣🤣 Great video, though. Love your channel.
Haha thanks Brian! It's too bad the 05/06 are a little different for the gauge cluster. Thanks for watching! - Sal
dude I put led in my dash and I never could figure out why some bulbs worked and some didn't. I couldn't find anything about the polarity of them. thanks for the knowledge. I have some more ordered to finish it
Haha yeah simple thing that could trip you up if you're not aware. Thanks for watching - Sal
Love it!
Thanks!!
Funny, the "Drive" bulb on my transmission indicator is out too. Will need to replace. I replaced the push button map lights just above the windshield on the roof. Those original bulb were pathetic. And I replaced the bulbs in the doors. On the doors and map light I replaced them with LED bulbs, but only got what I thought was marginal improvement.
The D bulb is notorious for going out on our trucks. The LEDs are a great upgrade too. Thanks for watching
Also bonus, if you have an extra two T10 bulbs the license plate lights also use those👍
Oh I didn't realize that! Thanks for the tip - Sal
Thank you 🙏
Thanks for watching!
sal great video. i have learned a lot from you. thank you!!! i swapped my bulbs to green first on the dash but too green. i ended up going back to white. I think I lowered the lower kick panel more than I really had to and I ended up breaking the mounting brackets on the small dash piece that holds the cluster brightness knob and my heated mirror button (which I didn't know I really had lol) I ended up having to take the cluster out again because I didn't realize that I didn't have one of the bulbs seated correctly, and i wanted to switch them from green to white. the second time around I now have a gap where the kick panel meets the dash. do you happen to have any idea why I have a gap; do I not have something seated properly? if you are in the drivers seat are there tabs on the lower left edge kick panel or plastic "colums" just there as a guide when you slide the lower kick panel in? If there are tabs with lips on the edge then I am pretty sure the lip edge broke when dropping the panel. any help would be much appreciated.
Sorry for the super delayed response!Hmm, I haven't had that panel off in a while so I forget what exactly it looks like and what could be jammed up or preventing it from sitting flush. I would recommend just taking your time going around the whole panel and looking for where it feels like it's binding up the most and investigating more. Sorry I don't have a better answer, but thanks for watching!
you are an intelligent guy. please don't say EXcetera. that is not a word. it is ET cetera. smart people realize this and they learn to say it correctly. just trying to help. you are helping us. I appreciate you
I appreciate the correction, it's a pet peeve of mine when people mispronounce stuff. Thanks for watching!

On both tundras I've had, on the map lights I remove the metal piece from the passenger but leave it on the driver side.
That sounds like a good game plan. Probably just the right amount of light. Thanks for watching!
If you put green leds will it look more like the green glow the tundra comes with as they have the green film on the original bulbs? I’d be interested to see what that looks like. Haven’t seen anyone use green yet. I have an 06 crew cab so I guess I wouldn’t be able to do the gauge cluster so easily which sucks but thanks for the heads up!
Yeah I'd be worried that the green LED is too green if that makes sense, not a soft green like the stock ones. Thanks for watching!
Would you know why the footwell light and the key ring light will only turn on when it touches metal
On my first gen (2002) my voltage is crazy high on the cluster??? like it is a few degrees from the top bar high. Anything I might want to check like a short somewhere?
Huh, that sounds a little weird. Not sure where to start looking to be honest lol, maybe the alternator itself?
What is the piece of equipment you have in the original radio compartment?
It's the Atoto F7 head unit, I've had it for well over a year and really enjoy it. Thanks for watching!

Just upgraded mine and the check engine light came on after any ideas of what might of happened? Gonna open it up again and make sure everything is dialed in
Dang, that's weird. I wonder if you replaced those warning lights with LEDs too that maybe its confusing something back there. I only did the backlights and haven't had any issues. Hope its an easy fix, and thanks for watching!
Hi bro!! Great video...👍🏼👍🏼 I have same cars tundra 03 and s13 89 coupe😅😅
Dude! You've got some great taste in cars! haha thanks for watching
Thanks for the video Sal it was very informative, although I’m wondering why the indicator/warning lights need 18x T5’s, isn’t it just 2x?
Hey Chris, you only need 1 T5 for the backlighting in the gauge cluster but you do need a bunch more to replace all of the other bulbs like the seatbelt light, check engine light, 4HI, 4LO, airbag, etc. sorry if that was a little unclear. Thanks for watching! - Sal
im thinking about doing green or blue led on the guage cluster and hvac🤔 is the missing bulb on your cluster for seatbelt? thinking about removing mine lol
Haha I don't think so, but I wouldn't blame you if you did 😂 going with a different color backlight could be cool too. Thanks for watching!
Which head unit are you using? I put the Atoto AP6F (I think?) in mine and it doesn't sit as flush as yours
I've got the F7 XE, and it fits pretty well. Here's the video where I talk more about it. Thanks for watching
czcams.com/video/z10_DbflgKo/video.html
Hi. Which bulb was it for the 2wd and center diff lock? Thanks
If you're talking about the bulb sitting inside of the button itself, I'm not sure. I didn't play around with pulling those out to get access. It'd have to be pretty tiny though. Sorry I don't have a better answer for you! Thanks for watching though - Sal
If the dome light is too bright, or any of the other LED replacement bulbs are just too bright, I wonder if there's some kind of adhesive neutral tint that you could cut and stick around the bulb itself to reduce the brightness?
That's a good idea and I haven't really looked into it, but I've gotta assume that people have tried it before. I'd be interested in it myself because I do think the dome light is a bit bright. Thanks for watching!
there is a "footwell" bulb on the driver side below/behind the dash - seems to shine down on the gas/break when door is opened (I think this is what triggers it, but mine doesn't work apparently). did you notice this one? i can't seem to get mine out.
Yep, someone pointed that out to me and I replaced it. It definitely took some finagling to get the bulb out, but it was a size T-5 and definitely did a good job lighting up the footwell with the door open. Especially considering the old bulb was burned out 😂 thanks for watching!
That tundras a beast! You happy with your Kmc’s? Been looking at them the past few days. A little hesitant wheeling cast Aluminum!
Hey Ben, I've actually got steel Vision Manx wheels on my truck. I've heard good things about KMCs but haven't had a personal experience with them yet. Sorry I couldn't help you out! - Sal
@@JDMDriveway dude that’s so strange. I posted that comment to Dr. Omiz’s channel about his wheels and somehow it ended up here!
😂😂 all good!!
Is there a bulb in the drivers side window control panel that can be changed
I think there are tiny little bulbs in some of the switches, but I have no idea how to change them lol. Thanks for watching
On a 2005 Toyota tundra is it possible to change just the map lights and dome light?
Yeah I don't see why not. I haven't tried it myself, but as far as I understand it's really just the gauge cluster that's "off limits". Thanks for watching!
for the 2005-2006 double cab, the map lights use two t10s and the dome lights use two t10s and a 36mm festoon. No 31mm festoon for these as far as I can tell
Gotcha, thank you for the heads up. I didn't have access to a double cab to get the details on those trucks. Thanks for watching!
7:51 be careful touching the light with anything metal. I was popping out my rear interior light bulb with a flat head when it sparked and blew a fuse. None of the interior lights worked and I couldn’t lock my pickup with the key fob because it would make that ringing sound whenever you try to lock it with a door open. Thankfully I had a couple extra fuses on me.
Huh I had no idea. Thanks for the heads up! - Sal
Which fuse was it I did the same thing
Problem: My map and dome light work fine with the doors closed while manually turning them on but they are dim when activated with open doors. Any thoughts?
Hmm, that sounds like some sort of grounding issue potentially. Honestly not sure where to start, does it do it with both the stock and LED bulbs? If it's only the LED ones, then maybe try a different brand? Thanks for watching
Does your truck not have the foot well lighting?
It does, but it was burned out and I didn't know that it was even a thing. I've since upgraded that to led as well and it works great! Thanks for the heads up
What size are the license plate lights? And are the dash lights dimmable with the dim switch in the truck?
I'm not sure what size bulbs are used for the Lise we plate lights, I haven't swapped those out yet. It looks like it's fairly common to just replace the housing with one that has LEDs in it. The dash lights are still dimmable. Thanks for watching

I can't really tell from the video which color temperature you have, but I hope you went with the more yellow white for the dome and map lights. From what I understand the human eye can see better with the more incandescent color temp than the super white LEDs. I personally hate the glare of those white ones at night.
Yeah, I definitely prefer a warmer color temp for the door and dome lights and these LEDs are a bit "cooler" than I would like. They aren't so cold that it's a blueish white, but definitely not 3000k like an incandescent bulb. I'd guess around 5000k or so. Thanks for watching! - Sal
I’ve got an 03 and a previous owner swapped all interior bulbs(aside from cluster and such) to LED, and I have an issue with them flickering. They did the same to top brake/marker light and tag lights and I have the same issue. No real rhyme or reason to it, just random flickering. Any thoughts/ideas?
Honestly, I think cheap LEDs start to flicker when they're on their way out. So unfortunately you may be due to replace those. Just my two cents. Thanks for watching - Sal
Hi Sal, This is a question for you. When I fill my 02 Tundra up, I notice it takes about twenty seconds for the fuel gauge to slowly rise to full. Is this normal? Do you experience this when filling up? Thanks.
Yup I have the same thing happen, when I got my truck I thought the gauge was broken but I've found that's just pretty normal. At least I hope 😂 thanks for watching!
What about the LED temperature? I have heard and read stories of them overheating and melting
I haven't had any issues with that, **knock on wood** lol thanks for watching!
