    Omg I LOVE Jersey cows they are literally so sweet! They are like giant kittens! I’ve been in love with cows since I was 4 years old but never lived on a farm. If I could get a cow I’d get a Jersey!!!!

      Love cows too☺️ I grew up in the in a village now living in Ireland but I go back to my country very often. I’m thinking of buying one cow at the start so maybe a jersey or Swiss cow would be my preference 😍 🐄

    Wife and I just bought our first jersey, she will turn two in July but she's been running with a bull for at least six months so I was told.
    She is a mix I'm sure she has classic jersey marking around her face and nose and she is smaller framed. But even though she's sweet she hasn't been handled at all so have to work with her there.
    Beautiful animals you have there.

      Thank you! Yeah every time our AI guy comes out he comments on how fat and all-around giant Juneberry is. Her heifer from last year I need to do some work gentling her down. She got a nasty infection of flies in her dehorning spot last summer and me treating it pretty much ruined any trust she had in me.

      We live in Jersey Village just on the outskirts of northwest Houston, Texas - the F&M Jersey Ranch was here by the Henry family from 1938-1948 before being developed to a suburban oasis with large lots for ranch style homes since 1955. We bought our 1972 home originally owned by the son of the Ranch’s owner, & I’ve become obsessed with Jersey cuties! 🥛💜💛💜🥛

    • @RoughandTumbleFarmhouse
      @RoughandTumbleFarmhouse  Před 3 lety

      They are both standard size. We haven't had milk fever issues YET. I say YET in hopes that I don't jinx myself. I do keep some tubes of Cal-gel and CMPK gel on hand in case we have issues. This year our hay is pretty rich so I'm a little more nervous than usual about it.

      In the winter I do have an area the goats can get to that the cows can’t if they want space away/ I want to give different feed or mineral.
      I do keep mamas and babies separate from the cows until the babies are at least a month old.

    Trying to do research on milk cows, planning on getting probably just one for my own consumption.
    Trying to figure out which breed gives the most cream and milkfat as we like home made butter a lot and of course the milk.
    Been looking at Jersey and Guernsey I think is what the breed name is.
    Which, in your opinion , would give the most cream. And milkfat ?
    Any info on this new venture would be extremely helpful.

    • @RoughandTumbleFarmhouse
      @RoughandTumbleFarmhouse  Před 2 lety

      Jerseys typically give the highest milk fat content of any other breed. That would mean the most cream, too.
      The amount of cream you get will vary based on their diet and if you milk share with the calf or not.

      @@RoughandTumbleFarmhouse True, I've been doing a LOT of research on dairy breeds and have narrowed it down to Jersey or Guernsey.
      Guernsey gives the added bonus of the beta caratene that you don't get with the Jersey, but, a Guernsey is seriously hard to find.

    • @RoughandTumbleFarmhouse
      @RoughandTumbleFarmhouse  Před 2 lety

      Depends on the animal for sure but on average a Jersey will eat 30-40 pounds or 13-18 kilo per day.

      @RoughandTumbleFarmhouse  Před 2 lety

      Thats....no how dairy milking works. You can milk a cow for years. The average lifespan in industrial dairy farms is 5 years, they are slaughtered when their average milk production begins to taper off and are then slaughtered for meat and to make components in medicine and technology like your phone
