The other official translation of the title is Ghostory.
Monstory is a little more accurate, while Ghostory flows better.
It mimics the structure of the OG title:
      化物語 - Bakemonogatari
化物 - Bakemono - meaning monster (or ghost)
物語 - Monogatari - meaning story

    • @wrexgrafix84
      @wrexgrafix84 Před měsícem +21

@@B3ASTLYSTYLE”Bakemono” 化け物 is a more general term for monsters, the supernatural, etc., so ghosts can be considered one of those monsters. More specifically, ghosts are more commonly called “obake” お化け or “yuurei” 幽霊, as well as other terms such as “onryo” 怨霊, which is a vengeful spirit. In this first series, we have seen vampires, ghosts, minor gods, werecats, etc., so “Monster Story” would be a more apt translation. Btw, the term the characters use to describe the supernatural in the show is “kaii” 怪異 (“the strange / the weird” … in other words, the supernatural).

    • @Vertutame
      @Vertutame Před měsícem

Monsters are manifestation of idea and unknown of it
This series is like you have the problem that became physical being.
Senjougahara couldn't take what really is of her situation, of her feeling and heaviness of it so she started ignoring people and their feeling.
Kambaru is literally Jealousy, they became radical and violence
Mayoi is just a person that's lost their ways and didn't want to take other advice so she's lost forever. Taking in other people idea will create conflict and it will hurt both sides but there are possibility that they can come together and find the solution.
I'm not saying that this anime it self is creating a story that pushes ideas in to object but that's literally how demons and gods were created. People named something they do not understand of the time and named them. The best way to understand this is hinduism. They literally put everything they do not understand as a god actions.
They maybe BS if you take it literally. But if you start to think of "how it feels like" it made more sense.

Dont worry about the characters not showing up in the future, theyre all important and will always play an important role. The author is goated on writing character interaction, and Studio Shaft is goated in showing that, for example: notice how theres barely people or crowd in the background? Its their way of showing focus on who is important, it's just one of many.

I always think of shaft's bakemonogatari directing as "visualizing a story you're being told". Anything that's not part of the story is filled in by imagination if at all, and affected by how the story is making you feel. It's very creative and like nothing else

bakemonogatari is a phonetic word chain that oddly enough translates pretty much directly into English without the need to explain it. bakemono = (monster/ghost) monogatari = (story); though bakemono in the bakemonogatari context the japanese would probably read bakemono as "monster" making the direct translation monster-story, but to make the word chain and word play exact an alternate translation keeping the phonetic word chain across languages would be ghostory. As for the alternate series titles, they are...
    Bakemonogatari - monster / ghostory
    Kizumonogatari - wound / Woundstory
    Nisemonogatari - fake/impostor / impostory
Nekomonogatari (black) - Cat / Catstory (Black)
Nekomonogatari (white) - Cat / Catstory (White)
Kabukimonogatari - flamboyant edo era hulagans / probably best to translate this to "Dandystory" and leave it like that
    Otorimonogatari - decoy / decoystory
    Onimonogatari - demon / demonstory
    Koimonogatari - Love / lovestory
    Hanamonogatari - Flower / flowerstory
    Tsukimonogatari - Possession / possessionstory
    Owarimonogatari I - End / Endstory pt 1
Owarimonogatari II - End / Endstory pt 2
Zoku Owarimonogatari - End / Endstory (cont)
Koyomimonogatari - Calendar / Calendarstory (though Koyomi is also Araragi's first name, the translation for his name is Calendar)
Monogatari Off & Monster Season - no translation needed
note these are not in chronological order in part because i'm feeling lazy and in part because some of these seasons have events from later or earlier then proceeding or following seasons, making this series a nightmare to follow in chronological order as it's not really possible if you watch it in season format. but if you break it up into arcs it is possible to watch chronologically.
an example of what i mean here is what you'd need to do to watch this series chronologically from start to finish (it's pretty silly actually)
(unreleased anime season for book Wazamonogatari)
    Kizumonogatari
    Koyomimonogatari episode 1
    Nekomonogatari (Black)
    Bakemonogatari eps 1-2
    Koyomimonogatari episode 2
    Bakemonogatari ep 3-12
    Koyomimonogatari ep 3-4
    Nisemonogatari ep 1-7
    Koyomimonogatari ep 5
    Nisemonogatari ep 8-11
    Kabukimonogatari
    Onimonogatari
    Koyomimonogatari ep 6-7
    Owarimonogatari
and it gets even more convoluted from there.

    @Niyudi Před měsícem +15

About the title, is even better in kanji. The kanji 物, pronounced "mono", is a very versatile one that basically means "thing". Many words have this kanji brcause of its generic meaning. 物語 is one such word, pronounced "monogatari", and means story. The whole series' titles are puns involving that kanji, like this one wher 化物, pronounced "bakemono", means "monster", so fusing the two words on the common kanji becomes 化物語, or "bakemonogatari". Another season is 偽物語, where 偽物, pronounced "nisemono", has the kanji 偽 for "fake", so the word is "fake", "imitation", or "counterfeit". The whole season title is "nisemonogatari".
To be extra clear, the titles are not real words, but puns. If we were to call this season "monster story", or "story about monsters", as the words sugest, the correct way to write it in jaoanese would be 化物の物語, pronounced "bakemono no monogatari".
Apparently the whole light novel is full of japanese word play, but my japanese is not nearly good enough for me to check it out myself unfortunately.

So! Since you guys noticed it, yes Bakemonogatari, as another commenter explained, is a combination of "Bakemono" meaning "Monster" and "Monogatari" meaning Story or Tale, combining to be Monstory.
Monogatari, and by extension its creator NisiOisin, loves to play around with words and the Japanese language, unfortunately in ways that at times do not translate well or at all into English. There's a lot of jokes that simply do not have a 1 to 1 in English, completely divorced from things we don't share, but ideas and items we simply don't really have a way to express.
Also as another commenter pointed out, this trend in titles continues! They often help to indicate what the arc is going to cover, "Monster Story" being an introduction to the beasts and oddities that afflict Araragi and those in his orbit. The next entry in the Monogatari franchise, "Kizumonogatari" can be read as Scar Story, or Wound Story. A tale of regret, mistakes, and lasting "scars". There's also examples of arcs you'll come across that are associated with more than 1 name, such as Onimonogatari, or "Demon Story", containing the story Shinobu Time, similar to Hitagi Crab or Suruga Monkey you've seen so far in Bake.
I'm not sure if someone's already posted about it or if you guys are already aware of it, but there's a few prominent ways of watching Monogatari. Technically every single arc in the story happens at a specific time over the course of a year or so, so you can mix and match TONS of arcs that technically happens before others as Monogatari isn't told sequentially. The two most prominent orders you'll find are Novel vs Anime release order. The only real difference between the two happens much later on, with Bake -> Kizu -> Nise -> Neko: Kuro all being shared between the orders. There's a bit of a change after there depending on how you want to watch, but honestly both are good and add their own pros to the series.
I just spent like 10 minutes typing this out and looked down to see that a specific Anime fan from Arizona already took the time to type this all out with even more detail. Yippie! Monogatari fans be dedicated haha

Shaft's directing for monogatari for me is like "visualizing the experience of being told a story" instead of adapting the story itself. Focus go in and out of characters, you got stuck on a word, you got distracted for a bit, the world in the background is constructed just to tell this story so it eerily always fit the current mood, even if it needs to deform in illogical ways

The reason it’s called ”Monstory” is because the author of the Monogatari series is a big fan of manipulating Japanese characters to have multiple meanings.
In Japanese monster is “Bakemono” and story is “Monogatari”. He played with the wording of both words to spell bakemonogatari
For Japanese speakers, people enjoy this series because of the heavy use of word play with the Japanese language but unfortunately for me and others a lot of the word play cannot be translated well to English

Bakemonogatari is a word play, Bakemono and Monogatari (Monster and story)
NisiOisiN is THE god of wordplays, is a shame that all of those genius wordplays are lost in translation.
Same with Nisemonogatari, Nisemono means impostor/fake

The question of whether or not Kanbaru has a crush on Senjougahara may be understood in part by the fact that there's a bunch of lilies in her opening credits sequence and that flower's Japanese name - yuri - being shorthand for girl/girl romantic pairings.

For the First season they will follow the novel order (they will watch Kizu after Bake).
They still haven't decided for Second and Final season (when they will watch Hana and Koyomi)

To answer the question Anna has about Monstory, the Monogatari series is a show with a lot of japanese wordplay. In this case Bakemono means "Monster" and Monogatari means "Story", so Bakemonogatari is a pun of sorts that sort of translates to "Monstory". The sequel series all have similar naming conventions. Love your guys reactions. Just thought I'd leave this here in case it was helpful.

Oops... bite my tongue. I love our snail turned deity girl. I also love this show for simply making conversations so god dam interesting. A perfect mix of humour, puns, word play, character dynamics, relationships and so much more. The writers and animators did a top notch job.

Pay closer attention to the environment in which Hanekawa is speaking with Araragi on the phone. She's in her school uniform and making the call in the middle of the night, in the middle of a noisy city.
