      @commiecomrade2644 Před 7 měsíci +24

      @@the_real_mr_wolff What are you talking about? They're right. Mental health was NOT considered a serious thing by many people back then. People beat their kids in public ALL the time. I got spanked with my pants down in the supermarket more times than I can count and I saw it happen to other kids.
      My parents used to threaten to abandon me when I misbehaved. I was 5. My dad would drive me out to the middle of nowhere and leave me there. Just drive off.
      He'd come back after awhile and tell me to stop crying or he'd change his mind about coming back for me.
      It was a different time. Why do you think millenials are so into mental health awareness. Because we grew up with parents who did not consider things like trauma and depression "real".
      They still beat kids at public schools when I was a kid.
      So yes it was entirely normal to tell kids going through any kind of mental stress - even grief - to get over it.
      It is hilarious that you are assuming what is normal for a time you sound like you didn't live through.
      People only started considering the mental health of kids in particular when columbine happened. But it did not mean overnight change. People who talked about psychology and their kids feelings were considered as coddlers who spoiled their kids.
      It wasn't like this stuff was unknown. But the general public? It was not part of the zeitgeist and CERTAINLY not part of people's parenting plans.

      @@commiecomrade2644 as I said earlier, normal parents would not be taking part in most of what you are talking about. discipline is important, but from what you just said it sounds like your parents are not normal. trash parents will always exist, in any and every generation. sorry your childhood was rough I guess. I was spanked fairly frequently as a kid and it has had literally no effect on my mental state or relationship with my parents, besides making me think through what I'm doing and whether or not I should be doing it in the first place. one reason millennials are so obsessed with mental health is the fact they grew up with the internet, which allowed them in a much bigger way to self-diagnose and feel the need to be different somehow. not to discredit people with legitimate mental illness, but the idea that things such as anxiety and adhd are considered serious mental conditions is insane. it's a way of getting more people on meds and letting them pretend to be weird and quirky. there is a lot of this on TikTok for instance, where kids use the excuse of having DID to do cringe cosplays and rack up views and attention. another example is the whole genre of shit like "day in the life of a person with anxiety". some people are more anxious than others, but everybody gets anxious about something, and the concept of having to medicate everyone with poor control of their anxiety is truly dystopian. people need to learn to take control of themselves and be accountable. I would love to see some actual evidence of people talking to their kids being viewed as "coddling".

    “Are You Afraid Of The Dark?” frightened me far more than Goosebumps could ever hope to. That intro had me clutching my blanket in terror…still get goosebumps from it😉. Plus the amount of 90s kids icons it had is legendary.
    Mike Flanagan’s Netflix show “Midnight Club” is based on the 1994 book series that drew inspiration by the Midnight Society in this show and the spooky stories they told, and was a key influence for Mike Flanagan’s work on the Netflix show as well, incorporating many similar tropes and overarching ideas used in “Are You Afraid Of The Dark?.” Mike Flanagan has even talked about how heavily the original 1990 series inspired his work on “Midnight Club” and his work in horror in general. If you haven’t seen “Midnight Club” but were a big fan of this show growing up, then I highly recommend you check it out. It has that Mike Flanagan flare and is more mature, making it enjoyable for both adults and teens. Although it’s truly criminal Netflix didn’t greenlight it for a 2nd season!!

I just grew up throughout the 90's-00's and looking back i realized just how willing certain things were willing to take risks & tell more mature stories. Most People just understood that these were forms of media, or video games, and if done right it actually gets certain life lessons across. (This is a very tame example) but a random example is, "The Rescuers" it is tame compared to many things back then but the animation team/writers/voice actors did an amazing job at conveying a story of an abused kidnapped child "in a kids movie. A Disney kids movie" it shows not just the anger from the older lady, but her manipulative sides. Where she breaks down the girls already damaged self esteem. It shows so many sides to that ladies dysfunctionally unstable behavior & personality in a very raw unfiltered type of way.. *Just that alone is something that no forms of media would be willing to do in the way that they did when i was growing up but oddly enough it's those stories that stuck with me the most. Even when you're older you can go back and watch these things and relate to these things. Just cause they called them kid's movies, didn't mean they wouldn't touch on difficult topics... That's what i wish we could get back in touch with nowadays because so much modern day stuff is not willing to even touch on difficult topics in any sort of relatable, conveying way.. it's really hard to explain the point that I'm trying to get across...

    I grew up on this Canadian masterpiece and wondered at the time why the accents sounded weird with all the soory and aboot ..almost sounded like my Michigan accent. I digress “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” was a top 5 fav but I was raised on “Tales from the Crypt” and was Goosebumps fanatic..so this was tame but still so good. So much spooky nostalgia.

  • @seeminglyseph
    @seeminglyseph Před 7 měsíci +21

    It may be silly but every time I tell a spooky story among friends it’s hard not to start with “submitted for the approval for the midnight society” the nostalgia was strong and it was fun to watch you explore some of it

    @lponm Před 7 měsíci +10

    This show was definitely harder than Goosebumps. I always liked it more.
    The campfires in boy scouts were at least 10 times larger than the midnight society and we all had knives and spears. Searing the leaves on surrounding trees. Good times.

      If you want more of Meatcanyon’s stuff specifically, he has the one with the Flashgitz guys called “Cream Crew,” and one with Noel Miller called “Stretch and Fade”
      As for some with Wendigoon, he just started a podcast recently with MoistCr1tikal & Jackson from the “Official Podcast” called “Red Thread” where they’ll go over cryptids and creepy horror related things online
