Walt's ego was his real enemy
It wasn't the meth, it was his ego that led to his downfall. It's like a part of him wanted to get caught, to prove his credit.
And Hanks humility learned from his injury was his friend and lead him to Walt
@@Onmysheet nah he just couldn't take not being noticed anymore. This whole life he was never recognized for his talents and now that his brother is praising his work, calling him a GENIUS, it turns out that Gail is getting the credit that he deserves, even if it includes heinous acts.

-Mike Ehrmantraut
And then Walt shot him.
@@garymcgary Because Mike hurt said pride and ego of Walt.
What Mike said was partially true and to a very different context. Actually Gus had plans of removing Walter at the first place, he wanted Gayle to learn quickly and take over. So, considering Walter kept on cooking keeping his mouth shut, he would have ended getting killed.
Hank would have realized the guy was still" out there' when the blue was still on the streets..
so this scene isn't really a turning point as others claim
@@anishghosh25 Actually, Gus only wanted to get rid of Walt because he saw that his partner was a liability. If Walt allowed Jesse to die then most likely Gus wouldn't think of killing him, and he knows he'll die in 6 months anyway so what's the point, 3 months and he was out.
This is actually so well written. Walt hated that Elliot and Gretchen got rich from the company that he started. It haunted him for the rest of his life. In this scene he basically reacts to trauma from the past. He is afraid that someone else might thrive on his ideas. This makes him unconsciously want to get recognition for his hard work and intelligence.
THEY started. TOGETHER. And he abandoned it when it was just a small start-up. And he hated them because they dared to prosper without his genius. His trauma is his own invention.

you seem to either intentionally(and rather mendaciously) or unintentionally forgotten that it was HIS(and only his) idea that made them rich. he was the genius behind the operation.
@@sabin97 Could you please elaborate what that singular "idea" was and when exactly in the show was it revealed as such? @@sabin97 bruh, they offered him a postion over the years, but he wouldn't take it because his ego was too fragile to ever come back. And he left because he couldn't stand that the woman he loved had a rich family.
This is the moment Walter stopped being a genius.
Perfect
best.
Nah, that was when he found out he had cancer. When that happened his #1 priority was to live before he died. The reasoning of I'm doing this for my family was simply what he told himself to convince himself he was doing the right thing. He cared for his family but not as much as he cared for the thrill of feeling alive and in the end, that choice cost him everything he cared about.

Super kicking him under the table haha
She was thinking "part of Walt wants Hank to catch him" because she told him that after this scene
I hope the cancer comes back
@@Adam-pv3yz The funny thing is she was way off and it was pure ego.
She wasn't. It is because of his ego that Walt wants to get caught. He wants to take credit for his phenomenal work and chemical abilities, which was denied to him in the Grey matter industries. The irony here is that getting recognition for the meth Empire means to reveal he is in fact a criminal
I know everyone is talking about Walt and his ego but I wanna take a moment to appreciate how Hank responds to this. On nothing but Walt's opinions he reconsiders everything he'd previously thought about the wrap up of this case. He takes Walt's word for it and pursues that angle. I enjoy little details like this that show how much Hank really respected Walt and his intelligence

Wow. Walter really wanted to let his brother in law know that Heisenberg may still be out there to help with his investigation. What a wholesome moment!
I'm sure hank definitely caught that person and went on to live with his life...Thanks Walt 😊

Gomey: (lying dead on the desert sand)
I get why Walter had such a big ego. He never really felt appreciated for his real capabilities, and once he got a taste of it, he couldn't let it go.
Although, lets be honest, its not that he just FELT like he wasn't appreciated, he really wasn't. That's not so much ego, it's more about revenge. About stopping the game and going home because it's your ball. It's the "ego" of society, that we're entitled to use geniuses and not reward or recognize them.
Yeah well, he could have stuck with Gray Matter 🤦
yeah so many instances of his life was just him not getting recognized because he just let himself not take the credit, I guess he thought of keeping his mouth shut as "making the same mistakes".
The character arc for Walter, in fact, the entire show, is about Walter becoming fully realized. Once he started using his genius, albeit, in this case, for evil, and his genius was recognized, he felt the power and fulfillment that a man needs to feel to be a fully realized human. He HAD to get recognition for his work. THAT drove him as much or MORE than the money (though providing for his family was his other primary driver). In this case, however, Walter MAY have gone a BIT far towards the dark side ... But he does admit, in the end, that "I did it for ME. I LIKED it. I was GOOD at it." That's what the show is all about. Walter realized his potential.
@@emanuelmota7217 humans don't need power to be realized, though. If someone needs that to be realized they are most likely evil because they are acting upon their ego, and egomaniacs tend to be terrible people, and I think that's a big point in Walter's development. He didn't become evil because he got realized, he was already evil, he was just too naïve to act upon it. You can even see evidence of that in early episodes before he got completely controlled by his ego, like when he pinned a kid to the ground with his foot or exploded the car of the guy who was talking on the phone at the gas station, he was not good, he was never good.
The way the show explains Walts ego and insecurities slowly build and build until he can’t contain them anymore is nothing short of incredible.
slowly? he's at max ego as soon as "grey matter"
Considering how confident Hank was that he had caught Heisenberg, the fact that he listened to Walt's opinion, even though his his eyes Walt had no police training or anything of that nature, in my opinion shows how much respect he had for Walt.
In fact, before he discovered the truth, you can see all through the series that Hank really does love Walt and considers him one of his closest friends. It's a shame that Walt through everything he had away, all for money.
But Hank also upstages Walt at his own birthday, making him look the fool with a gun, and making sure Hank's meth bust is on tv
@@battlez9577 to be fair Hank, atleast early in the show, does make these jokes with pretty much everyone. It's not really malicious against Walt specifically

Walt should have took satisfaction with the fact that Hank is indeed describing Walt's work (without knowing it) and calling it genius. That should have been plenty for his ego.
The real genius of the work was successfully hiding the true mastermind in plain sight... but that wasn't enough for Walt, he wanted to pull a Keyser Soze and gloat right there under Hank's nose. He not only destroyed his own empire in that scene, but that's also the moment he effectively killed Hank and Gomez.
Agreed but no one likes someone getting credit for their work, especially drunk it’d be hard not to say something
That whole thing with "Gray Matter" got him f'ed up over recognition though.
It's like a driving plot behind his character.
I like that pfp
I don't think it was necessarily 100% walt's ego. Part of it was guilt. Hank was talking about gale's genius and the potential he could have had while Walt sat there, knowing he was the reason for his death. Part of it was his ego but part was him trying to absolve himself
He did something similar with the gymnasium scene at the beginning of s3 when he was talking to the school about how much worse the plane crash could have been because he knew if it weren't for him, it wouldn't have happened.
How frustrating this has to be for Skyler lol. She's already compromised her morality and sense of safety to work with Walt so their family would be protected, just to watch this drunk narcissist literally bait their biggest threat into continuing to pursue him to satiate his ego.

@@vibovitold My "point" is that he's not "acting dumb" because that's how he usually is at all, he's acting like this because he drank too much wine at a really bad time which caused this to happen. Walter wouldn't have done this to himself if he was completely sober.
And I'm sure you meant to say "*it certainly did", right?
This whole scene is an object lesson in how an outsized ego will destroy you.
Let's be honest though. Hank would've found out Heisenberg was still alive. Blue meth would've remained in production and it'd only be a matter of time before Hank found out and connected the dots.
I guess when you sell your substantial share in a multibillion dollar company for 5k, you're gonna have ego and contentment issues when facing death. I feel like an underlying theme that was never explicitly stated is that Walt probably wanted to grow his meth empire to be larger than Gray Matter or what his share in it would've been and be recognized for it. And right from the start. When you think about it that way, a lot of his actions and inability to be content make more sense. The "family" thing was his self-delusional way of seeing some real worth in the vanity project he embarked on. Wasn't a surprise to me when he said he was in the "empire business".
An object lesson? Also, outsized? Don't you mean oversized?
It is the brilliance of the writers to make such a perplexing character.
@@mrbread3623 Blue meth remaining in production doesn't mean that Heisenberg is still alive and working. They do have different motivations though. Walt is acting out of his ego, Gus is acting out of revenge. Just as Walt's ego clouded his judgement, so did the desire for revenge cloud Gus' judgement.
Yes Gus is precisely what Walter so desperately tried, and failed, to become.
Gus had literally no ego maybe except when he faced the Cartel and we can give him that considering the circumstances

First it was all about money, in the end the money was the less important thing to him, everything became pride, ego, power, control. He never would stop getting more and more megalomaniac until end up dead anyway. He took of Tuco, then Gus, then Lydia and if not stopped would be some international big drug dealer. Walter had no any limits. He is the best example to that famous sentence: "do you want know a man? Give him power."
I got chills just looking at this again. I mean, watching this scene again reminded me of the genius of everyone involved with the show........ acting, check, direction, check, script, check, even the lighting, check!
So many things happen in just one simple scene.
Walt's self destructive ego is put on full display, the entirety of Hank's hunt for Heisenberg is set up here and Skyler gets to know a bit more about how dangerous a person her husband is which is the start of her fearing for the lives of her kids and reaches its zenith with Gus being killed.
This is the genius of Breaking Bad. This is why it's one of the greatest shows ever made. Most of its scenes are like that.
This scene (and the whole series really) portrays so well how all of us humans, no matter how intelligent or capable, are almost always still weak and "dumb' in other aspects of life (emotionally, common sense, etc..)
Walter was actually the biggest addict of them all.
He certainly took a lot of sips of wine for just one scene
(in character): This was a jaw dropping moment when Walt absolute fooked up purely by ego. This one scene was the beginning of the end, that steered Hank into continuing his search, and announced Walt's alter-ego to the world.
Ask any detective (real life) how they catch the majority of criminals, and the answer is that they, the crims, always end up telling someone what they did, they can't help themselves.
deep deep deep down inside, i believe Walt actually wanted to get caught. he for sure didn`t like someone else taking credit for his genius.
Seemed like he was very depressed he hadn’t left a mark on the world when he got diagnosed, and that was also probably also resurfacing resentment for leaving his company and being without credit also. He got to live and he got to leave a lasting mark on the world
@@seanclarke6733 he also literally left a mark in the lab at the end of the show with the blood from his hand
1:21 Skyler is literally looking at him like Walt if you don't shut up.....
0:38 Look at Walt's right eye. The way he reacts almost imperceptibly to the word 'genius' is just masterful
This is the moment rocks became minerals

"Give me my respect"
-Birdman - Walter White.
This is why they say pride can be your biggest downfall.
You can tell this is around the time he kinda stopped caring and almost wanted to get caught.
Walt really learned to love living on the edge. It's amazing that you can sometimes feel sorry for him then go straight to hating him and everything else in between, quite the spectrum.
You can really see how mad Walter got when he called him a genius.
Everyone is calling Walt dumb and stupid for talking drunk. But this scene was so good because it was kinda one of the 1st times Walt showed that he enjoyed the chase, the thrill and adrenaline of being Heisenberg.
This is an incredibly well acted scene. Wow.
The facial expressions of Anna Gunn and Dean Norris were brilliant. Dean’s look of confusion and Anna’s look of worry mixed with frustration.
Funny thing, if Walt wanted he could have acted as a chemist consultant to the DEA to catch other criminals and kept himself in the clear and closer to hank with out arrousing suspicion for gathering DEA Intel
He was a schoolteacher who couldn't get good health insurance, he couldn't realistically work for the DEA, because he'd be dead from cancer. Why do people think that's "ego"?
@@squirlmy at this point he was in remission and hank respected his insight so either could have offered and hank could have offered him a chance as a consultant and things would have been easier for Walter to stay ahead of the dea as long as he lead to random arrests every now and then
@@squirlmy did he mention ego?
death note basiclly
@@7kilos947 in was thinking about death note when I saw this. When light wrote lind tailor and L narrowed him down to the konto region of japan, he started to laugh. He said he would defeat L and I knew at that point he was an egomaniac. If his real goal is world peace and world peace only he would have not challenged L, remained elusive, and went for his goal. But he wanted to prove he was above him much like Walt does here.

@@studlord9970 You won the internet!
Well, you have to understand something: Walter was very quiet and humble person for his entire life, but not because of his personality, but because he ended up doing job that is below his expertise, being pranked and disrespected by his students, always had a feeling his wife is the one making all decisions and also that felt of guilt for leaving that "Gray matters" company for not believing in it right from the start.
In his eyes, everyone is living their lives at fullest, except him. He could also do that, but that would mean leaving teaching business and going into the unknown, which would probably not be approved by Skyler. Also, when he learned about his cancer, he also realized that his family will be in trouble after his passing, because Skyler is not working and baby is on the way, plus Walter Junior probably has some additional expenses due to his medical condition.
So, he first tried to do meth business, thinking it would be something as simple as producing and selling, but as time moved on and as he went through various situations where he had to do things he never thought he was capable of, he slowly started discovering his other abilities and started to adapt this other persona, slowly descending into madness without realizing it. His inner desires to feel like he really achieves something and that he is in command starts to consume him and take over. He takes pride in his work and doesn't want anyone else to take credit for it, which is exactly what we see in this scene. He could've easily keep his mouth shut and let Hank believe he caught Heisenberg, but no, that would mean his work would get attributed to someone else.
So, in one hand, Walter is the bad guy and one of the main villains of this story, but on the other hand, he is also a victim of his environment and unresolved psychological issues. It is not good to keep quiet about every problem you have, you need to step up and be able to express and discuss them. Being silent and keeping them inside you can make you explode at some moment.
Damn great comment, you nailed it
Hank - “Waaaalt” (credits roll)
Ego is a weak man's greatest excuse for strength.
Ego can be a huge strength. The pride of men is literally why some thousand year old buildings stand to this day. It just needs tempering, and Walt had been swallowing his for far too long. Once it came loose, it was a little too strong.
Ego is the reason that he started selling drugs in the first place, if he had put aside his ego, then his friends would have helped him financially for his cancer bills.
Sorry but that statement although sounds profound actually makes no sense at all. Please explain if you can.

Yep!
One of the many moments where he should've just known his place, but he is a chemistry teacher, who's reviewed plenty of notes, which makes this scene perfect as tense at it is, its also perfect in my opinion, this show did a really good job of making walt look justifiable until around the last quarter or so, where you have to tell yourself youre not really rooting for him as much anymore
I remember being SOOOO pissed when I 1st watched this scene.
I just noticed that he's wearing the same combination of colors as in the "I am the one who knocks" scene. Red shirt with an even darker red T-shirt underneath. This attention to detail in BB never ceases to amaze me.
Attention to detail? This is the ending scene of episode 4x05, and the I am the one who knocks scene opens 4x06 with Walt waking up hungover still wearing the same clothes, I don't think this is some stunning attention to detail.
@@scrimmybinger "I don't think this is some stunning attention to detail."|
You seem to be unaware of how television and film are made and what the people in charge of prop, set, and costume continuity do.
@@arkadycaca I mean he is right though, its not stunning attention to detail lol. The writers knew it made sense if he went to bed in the same clothes bc he was super drunk
“W.W. Who do you figure that is? Woodrow Wilson? Willy Wonka? Walter White?”
“You got me!”
Re watching the series right now such a good show
What a conflicted moment for Skyler. On one side of the table she's got Hank completely off their trail, but it's bittersweet because she doesn't want to be a criminal and deep down almost wants to get caught. On the other side she's got Walt practically telling Hank to keep looking, which is bittersweet because getting caught would destroy the lives of everyone at that table. And there she is, sitting literally in the middle of it. Such a great scene.
This is the moment Walt became Badger
"It was you. All along IT WAS YOU!"
So so many great scenes
He just can’t help himself. It’s so beautiful.
Instead of taking Hank's comments as compliments toward him, Walt's ego just can't let the lack of public recognition go.
Walt had it RIGHT THERE. The opportunity to reinforce Hank's mindset and free himself completely from the investigation. All he had to do was take it... but slaps it away because a few glasses of wine let slip his ego.
Yep, retire and agree with hank and hes probably scott free
Going from being a timid genius to an insanely confident genius in such a short time will give one quite an ego especially when nobody can see their work and someone else gets credit for it on top of that
This is the moment when it is the moment.
Skyler: “goddamit, Walt”
brilliant writing. acting.
there is a reason this show is one of the best shows ever made.
This just added to Hank's Stress & Anxiety moving forward.
Love Anna Gunn’s acting here
