- Can the massive earthquake that rocked Taiwan have ripple effects in the coast of California? Dr. Lucy Jones, a renowned seismologist, speaks with NBC Los Angeles’ Colleen Williams.
I am Taiwanese My phone received an earthquake alert 40 seconds before the earthquake. The earthquake intensity was 7.2 and the shaking lasted about 30-40 seconds.Near the epicenter of the earthquake, the first floor of two houses in Hualien collapsed. Other than that, there were no major disasters. The casualties are still being counted. Friends who care about Taiwan, please rest assured that Taiwan is fine.

This is what the media should be.....
One experienced news anchor and an eminence Dr. Lucy Jones
Her caliber of expertise is beyond words, i have learned a lot in maybe 5 minutes of this interview.
The NBCLA news anchor made the right questions without interrumping her guest or being sensationalist.
Congratulations to both, my respect for this amazing ladies.
@@DeJaVuCasometimes the anchor asks the question many viewers would ask, just so that the guest can give information that might reassure viewers. It is no reflection on the anchor.
I agree fully! I thought this expert was really good and this piece was exactly as news should be covered.

God real news, no hot chicks saying or asking weird questions. Great job
As news should be,,not entertaining or about celebtities..serious business..,,about real life..
Thank you for having Doctor Jones on for an educated analysis and not just speculation.
I'm a Taiwanese American, when that huge earthquake hit Taiwan 25 years ago, I was only 1 or 2 yrs old in Taiwan, living with my family.
Dr. Jones is really an expert, not only she knows her stuff, but she even pronounce words like "Hua Lien" and "Ji Ji earthquake" perfectly on the spot, as soon as I hear she said it, I instantly know which one she's talking about, no wonder she's the expert.
She kept mispronouncing China as “Taiwan.”
@@skf6199 haha I see what you're trying to do here, unfortunately we're all talking about earthquake, only certain people from certain country can't stop talking about politics😂
I believe Dr. Jones is fluent in Chinese so that would explain her excellent (at least from what I can tell) pronunciation.
@@ElkBit holy, you're right! She's got a BA in Chinese from Brown Uni! That explains everything, no wonder I'm impressed as a native speaker.

Hualian gets a lot of earthquakes. It's beautiful there but it gets a lot of natural disasters. Like Japan, their buildings are built pretty well to survive big ones. Only 2 buildings partially collapsed after a 7.4 is a good track record. If a 7.4 hit California, it won't be just 2 buildings. Hope the worst has passed. Prayers go out to Taiwan.

It’s 26 buildings collapsed now so far, 5 dead but that’s incredibly few casualties so far for a 7.4 earthquake.

Great interview, as a Taiwanese (50yrs old, and have a Civil Engineering degree) I still learn something from the expert.
Gosh, living through an earthquake that killed hundreds in my city, thousands injured and flattened most buildings, it is a horrific experience to go through. I couldn’t imagine waiting for a possible tsunami after going through that. The after shocks just don’t stop coming ! Horrible. Bless these people I hope they remain safe ❤
Thank you from taiwan
Lucy Jones is the best! (How many years has she been doing these press briefings? I can hardly remember a time when she wasn’t.)
Cal-Techs Dr Lucy Jones is the seismology expert for any, and every incidence of CA 'Shake and Bake' episodes that we have in So Cal and beyond.
She's on TV quickly with the size and location of temblors, giving necessary NFO on the quakes! She's the lifeline expert in all things quake around here!
@@SusanKay- Yes, I lived in LA for almost 20 years, so she was a regular presence on TV. (I lived in Topanga for the Northridge quake, which was an experience!)
Alaska has over 100 earthquakes a day. My heart goes out to them. I wish all earthquake prone areas had as strong building codes as me do. It would save lives.
Unfortunately here in New Zealand in 2011, in my home city of Christchurch, a country which shares the ring of fire with you, found out the hard way that some buildings had been not up to standard, killing almost 200 and injuring thousands. If it had not been a lovely summers day and lunch time when a lot of workers were out of their buildings to go eat lunch in the sun the death toll would have been much higher. 12 years in and I still refuse to park in car park buildings !
What an excellent interview. Couldn’t have picked a better expert. I wouldn’t be surprised if she lived in Taiwan before.

Dr. Lucy Jones is very interesting, informed and easy to listen to.
I'm in Taiwan. It was damn big. Many buildings collapsed. Landslides. Highways destroyed
Dr Jones’ pronunciation of the Taiwanese cities is so good, she probably speaks some Mandarin?
She has a BA in Chinese
The initial quake, although fairly shallow, was under the land and not offshore, so there was no tsunami. All of the aftershocks that were under the sea were less than M-6 and anything less than M-7 to 7.5 doesn't generate enough movement to produce a tsunami.
Praying for those affected.
This expert is fantastic. So fascinating and well spoken. As a lay person I felt like I understood everything that was said and her speech and passion come through very well. Thank you
Support to the great nation of Taiwan. Amazing people and amazing country.
Dr. Lucy, excellent commentary!
I'm 73, been in SoCal my entire life. I've listened to Dr Lucy since she 1st appeared on TV. She's the greatest. I wish I wouldn't have seen the "Wizard of Oz" wicked witch depicted as your channel icon, I had nightmares about her when I was a kid 😂🤣😁🙃
Props to Dr. Jones for the pitch perfect pronunciation of Hualien. She has obviously been to Taiwan it seems.
I suspect most semiologists have been to Taiwan at some point.
Where does it add the pressure
When I saw Dr. Lucy Jones name in the title I immediately clicked. For so many years she has been an expert completely worthy of trust. A genuine scientist, not a politico masquerading as a scientist. It shouldn't be unusual but it is.
Lucy still on the job. ❤

I wonder if it might happen more and in more places with the sun and moon's gravity pulling from the same direction the closer we are to the eclipse.

Totally agree with you. We had a man here in New Zealand who predicts weather patterns off the different phases of the moon, international sports events here, even go off his predictions. He also predicted earthquakes, again by the phases of the moon. He predicted a massive earthquake here in 2011, and he got slammed! People didn’t want to know! Almost 200 died that day and thousands injured. Most of the city destroyed. Totally agree with the theory of gravitational pull and the tectonic plates being put under strain by events like this.
Good job NBC

Talk about the Chinese Siesmic cannons
In fact, following the last major earthquake in 1999, Taiwan conducted a comprehensive inventory of its buildings and strengthened regulations regarding seismic structures. Essentially, even Taipei 101 is capable of withstanding "direct" seismic events of up to magnitude 7.

"Could any of this affect what's happening here?"
She was doing so well with sensible, well-considered questions and then she comes out with that stupid one. She should know the answer to that one herself.
Hualien has serious damage!
Oh no, Hualien 💔
Even though I really like Lucy Jones, it's probably time that she begins to acknowledge that they really don't understand what's going on when it comes to calling the all clear after an earthquake. I had a feeling she spoke too soon the other day when I heard her say that no nothing out of 100 mile range should be affected because of that big quake in Taiwan.. However we can see that with the 4.8 in New York today. Taking place all too soon after the 7.8 in Taiwan. We've seen this happen over and over again. These are just not coincidences. Something is happening with the plates underneath. And it can affect new quakes much further out than 100 miles from the epicenter. There's a man named Dutch Sinse who releases information about earthquakes almost every day. He seems to be pretty accurate with forecasting quakes and explaining the relation of quakes that happen within a similar time. You can see him do this when you watch his show.
We just in someone’s sim city game they about to “Save and come back to later”.

First it was reported as a 7.5 then another report said 7.2??? and now
It's said to be a 7.4 ???? Sounds like no one really knows.
Less than one meter is not tsunami. That's an ordinary waves at seas
It's likely that the one meter number is what the model provides. Whether or not that is detectable in the noise of waves out there is another question.
God please help Taiwan.
Hmmmm. Might we not get some "ringing" around the Plate? Bet we get some tremors here.

The Earth quake is a prediction of something worse to happen. (war)

Oh No!!! Please Lord! Have mercy!!
was there a tsunami?
The complex terrain in eastern Taiwan makes it less prone to tsunamis; they usually occur only when the epicenter is in the northern or southern regions. Taiwan's last catastrophic tsunami occurred in 1867.
