I am Taiwanese My phone received an earthquake alert 40 seconds before the earthquake. The earthquake intensity was 7.2 and the shaking lasted about 30-40 seconds.Near the epicenter of the earthquake, the first floor of two houses in Hualien collapsed. Other than that, there were no major disasters. The casualties are still being counted. Friends who care about Taiwan, please rest assured that Taiwan is fine.

Hualian gets a lot of earthquakes. It's beautiful there but it gets a lot of natural disasters. Like Japan, their buildings are built pretty well to survive big ones. Only 2 buildings partially collapsed after a 7.4 is a good track record. If a 7.4 hit California, it won't be just 2 buildings. Hope the worst has passed. Prayers go out to Taiwan.

Unfortunately here in New Zealand in 2011, in my home city of Christchurch, a country which shares the ring of fire with you, found out the hard way that some buildings had been not up to standard, killing almost 200 and injuring thousands. If it had not been a lovely summers day and lunch time when a lot of workers were out of their buildings to go eat lunch in the sun the death toll would have been much higher. 12 years in and I still refuse to park in car park buildings !

The initial quake, although fairly shallow, was under the land and not offshore, so there was no tsunami. All of the aftershocks that were under the sea were less than M-6 and anything less than M-7 to 7.5 doesn't generate enough movement to produce a tsunami.

He also predicted earthquakes, again by the phases of the moon. He predicted a massive earthquake here in 2011, and he got slammed! People didn’t want to know! Almost 200 died that day and thousands injured. Most of the city destroyed. Totally agree with the theory of gravitational pull and the tectonic plates being put under strain by events like this.

Even though I really like Lucy Jones, it's probably time that she begins to acknowledge that they really don't understand what's going on when it comes to calling the all clear after an earthquake. I had a feeling she spoke too soon the other day when I heard her say that no nothing out of 100 mile range should be affected because of that big quake in Taiwan.. However we can see that with the 4.8 in New York today. Taking place all too soon after the 7.8 in Taiwan. We've seen this happen over and over again. These are just not coincidences. Something is happening with the plates underneath. And it can affect new quakes much further out than 100 miles from the epicenter. There's a man named Dutch Sinse who releases information about earthquakes almost every day. He seems to be pretty accurate with forecasting quakes and explaining the relation of quakes that happen within a similar time. You can see him do this when you watch his show.

The complex terrain in eastern Taiwan makes it less prone to tsunamis; they usually occur only when the epicenter is in the northern or southern regions. Taiwan's last catastrophic tsunami occurred in 1867.

People just don’t get it. It’s not about natural disaster.
    It’s a warning.

I'm in Taipei and it was not 7.4. It was 7.2. Also where are the "people running for a safe place". Did you happen to check the video before going to air?
How the media overseas is reporting on this is just funny. The worst is the Americans, because so over dramatic.
Clip of how a Taiwan new presenter vs an American covers an earthquake when they are on air czcams.com/video/D6NMC8G496E/video.html
