    The energy that David Lee Roth brings is just phenomenal. He is so athletic and animalistic. Regarding meaning, I think 'jump' is about just going for it and taking a chance, especially if you have little or nothing to lose.

    The guitarist Eddie Van Halen actually learned how to play piano first before he started playing guitar. In 1978 I was fortunate to spend a hour with the band at a "meet and greet" at a record store in Austin, Texas. They were all extremely nice and each one spent equal time with everybody. That is a good memory.

    VanHalen a legendary band. The lead guitarist, Eddie VanHalen is one of the most influential electric guitarists of all time. Probably every electric guitarist playing today owes a debt of gratitude to Eddie R.I.P. VanHalen wrote many iconic songs and this is probably one of the most recognized. So great you reacted to this and your expressions throughout were a pure delight. Well done!

    Eddie was pulling double duty for the studio version: he did both lead guitar AND synthesizer. Which is why you barely see any keyboard playing in this video, despite the song having arguably the most famous synthesizer riff in the history of recorded music.

    The story goes that David Lee Roth was opposed to having electric keyboards (which were new at the time) to be used on a Van Halen record. Eddie Van Halen (RIP) was a well trained piano player as a child before he picked up a guitar. VH went with it, and made a fun party song. Play this at a party and everybody does the 'jump!' part. Simple but effective.

  • @richiecabral3602
    @richiecabral3602 Před 6 měsíci +16

    Right on! Yes. That was also Eddie on the keyboard. I think the way the story goes, is that Eddie Van Halen had been a child prodigy that played classical piano, and then at some point, he just picked up one of his older brother Alex's, the drummer, guitars, and went on to become one of the greatest guitar players to ever live. In that era, a lot of rock songs didn't necessarily have very deep lyrics, and more than anything, were just about partying and sex. You should also do some "Van Hagar"!
    So, to explain. This is the original Van Halen, from the 70s and the first half of the 80s, with David Lee Roth as the lead singer. Then David left, I guess. I don't really know the back story to how it went down, but word on the street is that Eddie and Alex kept very tight control over the band. I mean, the band is called Van Halen, and it was their ship. My guess is that Eddie was the timid and sensitive but also wild and troubled musical genius, and Alex was the muscle that was extremely loyal and protective of his little brother, and that can be smothering if your not one of the two of them in the band.
    So, they replaced David with Sammy Hagar, who had been from the band Montrose and had a solo career, which brought Van Halen a second life. People jokingly refer to this second version of Van Halen as "Van Hagar". Both versions are good in there seperate ways.
    They got rid of Sammy after like ten years. There had been a third version after that with Gary Cherone from the band Extreme, btw check out their song "More Than Words", but I think by that point no one was really paying attention anymore, and it didn't really work out. Then there were periods where they'd tour with Sammy again, then David again, and I think one tour with both. Then they just pushed out poor sweet Michael Anthony, the bassist, who had always been loyal and did what he was told, so they could replace him with Eddie's son Wolfgang. Since then, Michael has been playing in a couple different new bands with Sammy Hagar.
    Anyway, all the old-school Van Halen is great! Stick with it if you want to. "Hot For Teacher" is a good one with a classic fun music video you'll have to see. For the Van Hagar, check out "Right Now", which also has an interesting video that's worth seeing, and "Poundcake" and "Dreams".

    Edward Van Halen (aka Eddie Van Halen) was the iconic rock guitarist of Van Halen... but he was also a keyboard player (He learned to play piano as a kid before he picked up a guitar) ... Van Halen was a party rock band and they were more on the uplifting side of rock music.
    However, the story behind 'Jump' (which became Van Halen's #1 single in 1984) was a difficult one... Eddie Van Halen wanted to incorporate keyboards into the music he was writing, but lead vocalist David Lee Roth did not like it... He would tell Eddie that 'no one wanted to hear him play keyboards'... Eddie wrote the music for 'Jump' around 1981 and Roth hated it and refused to write lyrics and sing on it.
    Eddie apparently went to Gene Simmons of Kiss in 1982 and confided in him that Van Halen was likely breaking up because David Lee Roth was driving him crazy w/ his demands... Gene heard the music for 'Jump' and was very impressed; he encouraged Eddie to work it out in Van Halen and persist on recording it... The situation in Van Halen was problematic w/ egos, as well as drug and alcohol abuse in the band.
    Van Halen were recording the '1984' album and Eddie insisted that 'Jump' (and another keyboard song "I'll wait") be on the album... David Lee Roth was not happy about it, but he apparently wrote 'Jump' about suicide 😲 It sounded like a 'fun' song... but Roth wrote the lyrics about seeing someone who was in a hopeless situation and couldn't find a way out... so, this person got on the ledge of a tall building and was on the verge of taking his own life, and people who saw him would yell, "Jump!"
    Van Halen's '1984' album was a huge hit on MTV and sold 10 million copies in the US alone... However, Eddie Van Halen was proven right because David Lee Roth split w/ Van Halen around 1985 after the tour - Roth was more interested in a solo EP 'Crazy from the heat' and hoped to make a movie career... Eddie Van Halen had written a new album w/ a lot more keyboards, but Van Halen had no singer, until Sammy Hagar auditioned for the band... He loved the new music and encouraged Eddie Van Halen to play keyboards.
    The '5150' album in 1986 was the first Van Halen album w/ Sammy Hagar on vocals - it went to #1 on the US charts and sold 6 million copies... while David Lee Roth's solo album ''Eat 'em and smile" in 1986 sold platinum in the US (1 million copies).

    The song had an interesting origin. Eddie was pushing for new musical boundaries and wanted to bring in the keyboards which Dave initially objected to reminding Eddie he's a guitar player and warned him not to stretch himself too thin. Eddie didn't back down and JUMP was born. The rest is history. It came full circle a few years later when Dave left the band and Eddie brought in Sammy Hagar who was open to ANYTHING and Van Valen was reborn with a new sound all over again...

Of course that era gave me a billion other songs and bands that were super famous and never stop making me happy but, those three songs were my top three as symbols of that period, even back then, so it's not even like I settled on those three in retrospect or anything. I had my mind made up about that back when these songs were still brand new.

    Eddie, the greatest guitarist of his generation and arguably a top five all time guitarist, initially learned to play the piano and later, the guitar. Amazingly, he never learned to read music. He learned to play by watching others and being able to mimic note from records he listened to. Further, eddie came up with the music for this song which the studios didn't like because they didn't believe a rock song led by a synthesizer would sell. Eddie convinced david lee roth to write the lyrics and the song ended up as the band's biggest hit at that time.

    So nice ur learning more about Van Halen😁😁🎸🎸This song came out 6 years after their debut album 1978 & they had a more polished sound. Now you need to go to the very 1st album & listen to the Raw sound of early Van Halen. Ain't talkin bout love ..or ..Jamies crying. This album dropped Jaws all over the World. Edward Van Halen G.O.A.T. ( RIP ) 🎸🎸👑👑❤❤

    I remember listening to this song on the radio when it first came out, and radio stations used to include the 1:00+ instrumental album intro which precedes this song on the album...it gives the piece even more synth. Today, classic rock radio doesn't play the intro (which is titled "1984" on the album). The synths were pretty controversial at the time, since Van Halen was a guitar-based, guitar forward, guitar featured, rock band...so the inclusion of synthesizers (and heavily so) was by some a betrayal, and by some, gave permission to rock fans to enjoy synthesizer lead songs, and as we all know, the 80's had a LOT of synthesizers in them, pop, new wave, post-punk, and thanks to Van Halen...rock. 1984: czcams.com/video/c0mN7rvgb-4/video.html

    It's funny how the band members were showing such positive vibes throughout the video. And I'm sure it was they wanted to portray it that way to appeal to the fans! And it worked! But by then I hear Eddie and Dave were at each other's throat and could no longer work together anymore.
    And with that said, the video of course shows features Eddie showcasing his other talents with with the keyboards! And the fans embraced his talent for it!
    Miss you Eddie 🙏

    The singer, David Lee Roth was a martial artist, he studied Kenjutsu since he was 12, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, and Kenpo karate (which I also studied). That explains his kicks.

    Definitely a first to hear Dave's voice described as "beautiful" but the fun, spirit & energy of the song can have that effect, I suppose. And for almost 40 years, I've been trying to figure out what he's doing with the mic stand on his butt there at the end but it always cracks me up 😂

      As I understand it, someone in the crowd watching the guy yelled “Go ahead and jump!” Yeah, kind of a dick move, but it did lead to a great song.

    • @Cloud_Strife0811
      @Cloud_Strife0811 Před 6 měsíci +1

      The song isn't about a guy who was going to jump off a building. It was inspired by it.
      In 1981, Eddie Van Halen penned the synth line of “Jump,” but his bandmates were sufficiently unimpressed as to opt out of doing anything with it at the time. (Whoops!) A few years later, producer Ted Templeman approached David Lee Roth and asked him to give it a listen, which he did, and he came up with lyrics while reflecting on a news story he’d seen about a man threatening to commit suicide by jumping off a building. Somewhere along the way, however, the song’s lyrics evolved away from the decidedly dark tone inherent in that premise, instead transforming it into more of a paean to love. After writing the lyrics, Eddie said, “We finished all vocals that afternoon and mixed it that evening.”

    Eddie Van Halen (Guitarist) & his older brother Alex (Drummer) began playing piano at the age of six. Many musicians are multi-instrumentalists. Interestingly, Alex began playing guitar first so Eddie started to play drums when they were kids. Soon after, Alex took up the drums & Eddie switched to guitar & became one of the best Rock 'n' Roll guitarists of all time.

    One of the best bands of all time. Eddie Van Halen was so talented. His guitar solo "Eruption" was epic. Van Halen brings me back to my younger days, whether it was with David Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar as lead singers. So many good songs like "Panama", "Hot for Teacher", "Mean Street", "Running with the Devil", "Ain't Talk About Love", "Unchained", "Atomic Punk", "I'll Wait", "House of Pain", "Poundcake", "Dreams", "Judgement Day", "Good Enough", "Why Can't This Be Love", "Love Walks In", "Right Now", "Runaround", & "When It's Love". Also, the live performance of "One Way to Rock" from their 1989 Tokyo concert has some cool guitar shredding from Eddie and Sammy.
