We learned about breathing, different coping mechanisms, and even made our own "relaxation toys" which were water bottles with glitter in them. They were used to help us when we were feeling anxious, so whenever that happened we'd focus on the glitter and try to count the glitters in it. It helped!

But I would like to emphasize that end of mental illness is not just related to brain health, there's also a need to understand if there are any social, emotional personal issues and address them as well. This was so refreshing to hear. I think a lot of doctors are so fast to prescribe drugs and not see the underlying issues. ESPECIALLY physical issues like diet, exercise, head trauma, etc… A healthy body can help so much, and I feel like there’s this trend going around of people saying that healthy diet and exercise is “fat-phobic”, which in turn causes more issues. Can cause this endless cycle of depression because of how you look, then when you try to change it you’re told it’s not good, which causes more depression, etc.

When I tried the breathing technique, I almost fell asleep! That’s how calm I felt. It was insane, I’m going to keep trying to do this when I’m not feeling good (mentally) which is almost all the time. Thank you so much!

What helps me is going to bed at a specific time and actually trying to stay awake. So, say you go to at 10pm, make yourself physically get into bed at that time, even if you're not tired, and try and stay awake. Make a mental note of what you have to do tommorow, what went well today, pray, or just talk to yourself about something. Eventually I'll fall asleep without even realizing it. But theres a lot of different techniques. You gotta find one that works for you.

idk if you're looking for advice, but what helped me was reading a study about how lying down in bed with your eyes closed, quiet, relaxing, even if you're not fully sleeping, is almost as healthy as sleep!! I used to be like "omg only 4 more hours of sleep time left!!!!!" and now I'm like "well at least I'm resting like this"... also, breathing exercises and guided meditations help a lot. I can also recommend the podcast "Sleep With Me", that one's helped me through some tough nights. Good luck 🍀

Dr. Amen is a sort of modern day snake oil salesman in the ADHD community. It makes me mad. Dr. Russell Barkley is a much better source on ADHD and pushes nothing but the science, hence why he isn't as "popular". I'm working through his book right now as a newly diagnosed adult, and the science behind ADHD is so fascinating. His lecture to CADDAC can be found on CZcams. 3 hours long, and well worth the watch for anyone diagnosed or with an ADHD loved one.

There's even one I love that says it's for better sleep! It's obviously not some magical cure but it definitely helps loosen up the right muscles if you go to lie down in bed and feel stiff and uncomfortable. It makes it easier to sink in and relax.
