PSA!!!: For anyone including myself applying this year, keep in mind colleges take into consideration where you come from. I live in a rural area and the opportunities presented to students vary widely between areas like these and big cities/private schools and colleges know this. Do your best to present yourself in essays and know that students in huge cities and that go to college prep schools will usually have a bigger budget with more choices for students including harder/more advanced classes and more opportunities through community outreach/research than a smaller school where the majority of students attend. Try your best and do the best with what you are given. Don't compare yourself to the 13 year old that created a breakthrough discovery when they were surrounded by money, private tutors, and big budget schools when you grew up in a small town in the middle of the country, or even a city school that just didn't offer those opportunities. As long as you did your best with what you had, thats more than enough. Keep your heads up, y'all got it.

I’m currently a rising sophomore, but I am worried about my classes not being hard enough. Freshmen year I took 1 AP (Human Geography) and 2 honors (English and Algebra 2). However next year I am only 1 AP (Comp Sci Principals) with honors in English, Pre Calc, and Chemistry. However, I am worried about my language class that is Spanish 1. I switched over from French to Spanish since my teacher was the only one for all levels of French. Next year I’ll also be taking academic decathlon and speech and debate. Any advice what extracurriculars I should do or clubs to join? I am interested in studying business economics at UCLA.

    • @lifeofmeili
      @lifeofmeili  Před 4 lety +2

I think that's great you're planning to do academic decathlon and speech and debate! I would say it's best to choose a couple clubs, and try to get leadership positions in them. From my experience, colleges like to see that you narrowed your focus to 1 or 2 clubs and got leadership positions, rather than joined a ton of clubs and was just a member. Hope that answers your question :)

"Isn't much to flex" You had what at my school was called DOUBLE HONORS. As a freshman in honors, my class was Honors Geometry. Freshmen that are a bit more on the slow side took Algebra, while regular freshmen took reg geometry. Only the smart smart took Algebra II during freshmen year. And that's like a select few, so I think you do have MUCH to flex. Also at my school we can literally only take one AP class freshmen year, but like Junior year is when the 5 AP classes start to kick in. I went to a public school btw.

Could someone help me out please? I had a D grade in GCSE Math. I sat for my my O level (GCSE) in grade 10 and A Levels (IAL) in grade 11 and 12.
In my O levels I had seven subjects, consisting of 3As, 1B, a C in English Language B (which consists of Creative, Directive Writing and Comprehension) and D in Mathematics.
My subjects were Commerce, Business Studies, English, Accounting, Econ, Math and Bengali
In A levels, I had Accounting, Business and Law and I got As in all three.
I also have a pretty solid ‘businessy’ activities list with good leadership positions, internship and volunteering, all included.
How much will my US college decisions be affected by the D grade in maths back in o levels?
Will a good SAT score help make up for it?
I am applying for Business majors in 4 UCs, and 19 other universities.

Firstly, I’m really happy to meet someone in similar shoes as I am. I’m taking IGCSE next year and aspiring to take a foundation year before applying to uni. Secondly, your GCSE grades aren’t a deciding factor into your admission. You don’t have to worry about the D you got in math especially because it probably isn’t your strength. You can highlight that even better with your A level results by telling the colleges about your strengths in Business and accounting (both with your grades and even extracurricular activities) what really matters is your essays and extracurriculars and how well you put yourself out there. Also, taking the SAT will show them that you can adapt to different curriculums. Don’t see yourself as disadvantaged just because of your GCSE grades. You’ll do just fine! Fighting!

I went to one of the most competitive (public) high schools in the nation and these extracurriculars and test scores are nowhere near enough to get you into UCLA. My school had around 3500 students UCLA was one of the best schools I got into. Here's my stats:
    GPA uw: 3.85
    GPA weighted: 4.5
    SAT: 1520
AP's: AP Stats, AP Calc AB, AP Calc BC, AP Physics, AP Chemistry, AP Biology, AP Psychology, AP Language and Comp.
Honors: Honors English 3, Honors principles of biomedical science, Honors chemistry, Honors human anatomy
College Courses: PSYC 1 (psychology), CHEM 30A (chemistry), OOP Python, BIOL 40A
    Extracurriculars (the real deal):
Research - MITES, Rosetta Institute of Biomedical Science, Aspiring Scholars Directed Research Program, COSMOS
Internships - Medical Immersion Summer Academy, SMYSP, NSLC
Initiatives - founded AI Research Initiative (research program intended to give the opportunity to do research to as many students as possible; 3500 total researchers, 6 published research papers, 3 partnerships with big institutions, 4 federal grants totaling $5000)
founded 4SCE (4 Serving Communities Educationally) - provides students with easy access to medical volunteering because of our partnerships with multiple volunteering organizations (around 3000 members)
Competitions: Alameda County Fair 1st place Award, Climate Science Olympiad Finalist, ISEF participant, Regeneron STS Semifinalist
Fundraisers: Started fundraiser for the Russia/Ukraine war which garnered $4k in funding
***AND I FILED FOR DISABILITY WHICH HELPED MY ADMISSIONS CHANCES IMMENSELY***
Note: I am an Asian male living in a very competitive Bay Area high school which does lower chances a lot, and UCLA admitted 20 out of 330 applicants that year. I probably got unlucky while applying, so this isn't necessarily needed to get into UCLA.

I’m a rising junior and I’m worried I don’t have the grades to get into the uc’s or “southern ivies” (I don’t want to go to the ivies since I don’t have any family around). I’ve taken 5 honors in freshman year, 5 honors and one CTE my sophomore year and have a 4.0 uw and 4.4 weighted and I’ll have to take 8 aps or duals in the next to years because of the honors program I’m in, but I have a 25 on my ACT. I’ve taken the ACT 3 times now and it hasn’t gone up much, and all my practice test haven’t gone up either. Do you think I could get into UCLA or USC with my high grades and low act?
Edit: I also am a jv tennis player, 2nd chair 1st violin in the orchestra, and am very involved in multiple academic and service clubs, if that makes any difference

hi! college applications are a holistic process, meaning they consider more than just test scores. Grades, extracurriculars, leadership, essays -- all these are important to your college application! So while your test scores are a piece of that puzzle, there is no "cookie cutter" application that will guarantee admission. In my opinion, as long as you try your best, you'll end up at the school you're meant to be at! and it sounds like you're really involved, which is great :) hope this helps, you got this!

Out of experience for me everything came unexpected and not what I had planned, still hard to accept. Advice is maybe apply to more privates bc I did not apply to any privates but also even if you do get in some cannot afford it!
U know the whole college system is just corrupted esp as a graduating senior its hard, with no SAT what do they grade on just gpa and essays. Hopes up too high when thet just reject u in the end. I guess also a factor might be where you live and heard that Ucs this year are being hecka greedy always wanting the best of the best and giving priprity to intertantional students (giving them more moolah) and taking in ppl who were in gal year last year, bc of this covid thing idk how they determine how you get in. And its unfair and super competitive, you tried your hardest in hs but in the end you just get rejected. Like one of the comments down below said Just go with the flow and everything will be ok! Whatever school you go to its what you make out of it! THE SCHOOL DOES NOT DETERMINE UR SUCCESS BUT IN YOU YOURSELF AND YOUR DETERMINATION AND HARD WORK ! JUST KNOW TO RETHINK EVERYTHING AND MAYBE THINGS ARE NOT THE RIGHT FIT AND THERE'S SOMETHING BETTER WAITING FOR U! Hope this makes somebody's day who may have gone through similar
