- This is the end of the match between Stanford's Ryan Thacher (ranked #36 nationally) and USC's Jaak Poldma (#41). It was the #2 singles match in a dual between the two schools on March 25, 2011 at Taube Tennis Stadium at Stanford, California.
watching these guys make me realize how consistent pros are
Nice work from both boys. Jaak's work at deuce 5-6 down is what set him up for the tie breaker, scrappy and agressive. But impressive from both. Shame that in sport someone has to lose. Good work to both!!!
I dont think there is one high school player that could beat these guys
Both players are very, very good! They represented their respective universities very well. Congratulations.
Ouch, that loss has got to hurt. Thatcher had lots breakpoints and match points in that third set and held his own serve pretty comfortably every time.
Jaak Poldma plays for USC. In the description you correctly say that. In the scores that you flash on screen between points in the video in white print, you have UCLA next to Poldma's name in parentheses. You might want to fix that.
@HBNplague Thanks for the information, I never caught that. Unfortunately, editing the video will be too much work now. Sorry to both Jaak and USC for the oversight.
ive only been playing for three years, im a left handed player and i wish i could play like the lefty playing here my skill level is moderate but man i wish i had some of these guys skills
Now that's a good match!
Poor Ryan Thatcher. He got tight in the end during the tie break. Missing a bunch of volleys n stuff. Jaak just kept on with the pressure, intensity and focus though. You can tell Thatcher has a better Serve, technique and overall form. He has the potential to be way better.
Great game, I would paid no problem to watch it.
Ryan was just completely rattled after that game at 5-4. The momentum completely switched. Just goes to show how mental this sport is.
@lemonrain13 I agree. And the ironic thing is that a lot of the pros who find it necessary to scream whenever they hit are usually the ones to complain when someone does as much as breathe too loud
@blazensnow This touch with the net wasn't enough percieved..If for exmple a serve hit the net and the ball almost stop, then what do they?
these kids are good. clean play
They are amazing!
Just out of curiosity, does grunting that loud really help hit with more power? Or is it just mental?
Thacher looked a couple times like... "man im better..." Takes more then talent to win a match. Jaak showed that perfectly.
they lefty had the opportunities to win, but the other guy was just not giving it up from match points down to win it the tie break was great!
That Ryan Thacher has a really nice serve. Im only in highschool and im training real hard to be a pretty damn good lefty and im looking for tips on improving
Which camera used in this film?
I love that Ryan Thatcher guy's service motion, well and serve. Mine SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!
woah thacher's serve looks amazing someday i want a serve like that if i make it to college tennis :I
the righty's 1st serve % is like 10%
SO many match points... A hard loss for Ryan..
Great match!
Wow for that guy to fight off match points and then win is awesome.
gotta hate losing with 4 match points..
Great video.
The video scoreboard says Jaak is from UCLA. Might wanna fix that
Were they not allowed to use their backhands?
One hitting as hard as he could, the other moonballing on match points.
I really like Ryan's service motion.
Question - Are these guys ambidextrous?
to combat cheating. They would call lets when the ball never touched the net. This way it just avoids any controversy but yields free points at times.
It's usually the angle of the camera. If you were to watch a professional match at the same angle of this video, you would definitely notice the difference.
How do you know it wasn't Mirka?
for what? forehand backhand serve?
@konstantinos20010 Only in men's D1 tennis, a Let has to be continued and cannot be redone. "This used to be referred to as "The UCLA Rule" in the Pac 10." And if the ball hits the net and stops, then it is the server's point.
Have anyone noticed that the service in 3.50 was net..?
At 8:45 did they not play a let?
whats the right handed guy's grip called?
To be honest, I like Ryan's service a lot. That is a good speed, a good power.
But I prefer Jaak's foundamentals.
not to provoke any negative comments or anything but I think its kinda funny how your name us cal bears which is UC Berkeley and your filming stanford's tennis team:0
good point
lol...hitting a forehand gives them advantages so running around the backhand is good 2 sometimes.
john isner, rank 11 worldwide?
Saves four match points and then takes it in the tie break? Kid's got some stones.
I believe you both are quite wrong on the grunting topic. Most players use grunting as a way of releasing stress. It's like when you're stressed, you take deep inhales and exhales to sooth your muscles. It's the same in tennis, except heavy breathing during a point would be unethical. Therefore, grunting releases the stress quite a bit.
do they play lets in college?
can anyone explain the 2 handed return at 6:13?
What? From ucla or usc
damn...he dumped four match points...ive never seen that before, especially 0-40 up in a game
the right hander needs to toss the ball higher for his serve, he looks rushed.
The lefty had more power but the righty ran around his backhand a bit and played very smart tennis.
why did the guy apologize as 4:40?
they are good but honestly they have many weaknesses. their technique is far from perfect. i'm talking here about their motion, especially their forehands, their footwork isn't great, they take too many chances from the baseline which translates into many errors. they really play like americans... no insult in this. it's just too power oriented, not very good technically and tactically. at least they have the fire power but i know many people inculding myself who've got a better potential
i dont think their bad.they just dont play very smart
their points are so short its not interesting
The lefty has a monster serve.
So sad to see high school JV level number of spectators.
USC likes to run around the backhand at any cost
actually you are correct.
Actually they don't, reason being that if someone aces another, they would just call let and make em do it again, therefore, they just play lets as serves.
Damn if this guys are ranked #36 and #41 I wonder how the #1 guy in the nation plays...
Buen partido, tenia que ganar el del revez de una mano.
2:56 theres just a random aughhhhhh! lol
If Thacher can't control better his position on courto after serving he will be even better !
@konstantinos20010 in college tennis, there's no such things as net. you play the point even when it's net
how do u know hes not roger federer?
If anyone wants to be critical of form, please note guys like Florian Mayer or Fabrice Santoro. They're not the best, but who cares. Technique is important, but is still arbitrary. McEnroe and Connors were playing just 30 years ago- look how different the game is. That's what makes the game ever so dynamic. Also, the announcer who keeps shouting Sarah Hall in the background is really pissing me off.
Reminded me of James Blake and Nadal!!
Could these guys win at the Futures level? Challengers?
i've watched tennis since 6 yrs old. I'm 39 now. Why does this look faster than the pros? Weird. I wonder if anyone thought the same thing...
the camera angle. and this is about as fast as pros - so power wise this is about the same. only difference is that pros are a lot more consistent with the flat speed
@konstantinos20010 in D1 college tennis, they play on it
fun match
03:48 is a clear let?!?!
08.49 ace ?
damn they are so good.
the leftys got a nice serve
@AkMachx
service? wtf?
4 match points saved! poor Ryan...
The scary thing is, these guys wouldn't be ranked in the top 500 in ATP, maybe not even top 800
Not really if you look the stack in the top 600 you see why most have so far to go
They have alot of error. I dont think they can reach that far
Jaak was ranked in the 600s at some point
I like how you accuse the other guy of being wrong, then realize he's right haha... there was to much controversy over false let calls, apparently
Jack was actually a better player 3years ago, I don't know why he went off tour
2:18 oooooh he mad!
because roger federer is practicing all day 24/7! lol but damn these guys are good. im in high school and i have 2 friends that are top 50 in North America one of them is like ranked 20? or so and he plays on these guys level but obviously a bit better.
American tennis is looking very good right now but these guys are still great
I think it's only in D1 Tennis that they don't play lets.
I believe lets are played in college tennis.
Jack wasn't pretty but he got it done. Very scrappy player, sneaky returns that were hard to be offensive against
looks like a semi western grip.
@aznballa32 really?
It's funny how defensive people get when you comment anything but "oh they are great".
But seriously, these guys suck. American tennis is not looking so bright.
強!!
recruitment vids my friend
that's true, they really have poor tactical as well as technical skills. all about hiting big
@KSardor1 I meant serve.... im fucking italian....
whatever happened to either of them did they go pro or...............
Idk about Jaak Poldma. Ryan actually went to medical school.
Jaak went to law school at Berkeley
I've never understood why college players play lets.
