The bass and drum duet in the middle is classic. Developed by Bob Haggart and Ray Bauduc one evening when the rest of the Crosby band was late getting back on stage to start the next set and they improvised to keep the crowd entertained.
@@replyhere590 if I was at a jazz show and it sounded like the record, I'd be pissed. Hell, I feel that way about country, rock or rock bluegrass. The rides and fills should be extemporaneous.
From the 1943 movie "Reveille with Beverly". This movie also has numbers by Count Basie, Duke Ellington, The Mills Brothers, Freddy Slack, and Frank Sinatra.
The girls singing are the Wilde Twins, Lee and Lynn from Indiana, they did a lot of Mickey Rooney "blond movies". They started with Ray Noble's orchestra, then went with Charlie Barnett. They were under contract with MGM for seven years. Hope this helps those who want to know who the beautiful blonds were. Thanks for posting
The family story goes... My uncle Bobby Haggart, my dads brother in law, wrote this about my dads brother JB. They, the Crosby band, played the Pump Room in Chicago, JB and friends came in from Winnetka and sat in the floor and wouldn’t stop talking, hence Big noise from Winnetka. My dad was working with the band at the time.
Lived in Winnetka in the late 90s and into early 2000s and was playing trumpet/piano junior high jazz band when we were playing the tune, and the jazz band director at that time gave a story about it at one of our concerts. I don't remember about the specific people involved that became the title of the song, but it's almost the way I remember it: it was an incidental music created on the spot about the people who couldn't stop talking in the venue, who just happened to come from Winnetka, Illinois. If I remember correctly from the story, the whistle part of the song was to keep everyone quiet.
Bob Crosby was annoyed by the noise from one table, and to quiet the people he asked who they were. One man at table yelled back that they were the big noise from Winnetka. Winnetka is a lovely upscale village north of Chicago.
ray bauduc was one of buddy rich's favourite drummers, being from new orleans, ray had the knack of playing a double stroke roll that even buddy envied and admired.
Watching "The Rockford Files" tonight...Jim made reference to the drums on "Big Noise from Winnetka"...had to track it down for a listen...excellent!!!
It's a shame you have to buy music books just to learn one of The Bob cats amazing songs. Many of them have been lost to the secrets of time. One of the most under-rated ensembles of all time.
When my Jewish, drugstore cowboy father from NY was courting my Arkansas-rooted mother in Reno, he would saunter through the casino where she was dealing "Twenty-one" whistling "Big Noise." Thanks for this trip down memory-of-memory lane!
I'm in the marching band and we're using this as a closer to the halftime show, got curious what the song was and honestly I don't regret it (p.s. I play trombone)
In George T Simon's book The Sights and Sounds of the Swing Era Decca artist Glen Gray complained about Decca never being able to press the hole bang in the middle of their records. The start of this clip amply demonstrates the veracity of that complaint.
+lee shafer Words don't matter in songs as this. They're just there to give shape to the melody. That's why there's scat because sometimes they didn't want any words at all--just use the vocals as instruments. Gotta understand your jazz, son!
A 99-year-old friend from church told me about Bob Crosby and this song today. That’s what brought me here.
You’re lucky to know someone from the golden era.

Interesting, that's probably why it never sounds exactly the same in different performances.
I have a friend who played with both of those guys (at different times). There is a video on CZcams with just the two of them doing the whole song.
Bob haggat and ray baudic

Thanks for this background info, Jeff. You could tell it was a special interlude in the piece.
I live for that drum and bass break.
are you still alive for it?
SO ELEGANT AND COOL WHAT A DIFFERENT TIME!!

Those Big Bandleaders back in the day. were the Movie Stars of the Music Business.

Ah, that's where I remember them--from an old MGM movie with a young Judy Garland, and they performed again with Bing Crosby.
The whistling intro is amazing. I think Ray Bauduc was one of the top drummers, such rhythm!!!
I'm so utterly amazed by the drum and bass duet. Truely awesome! 5 stars!

Hey Margo, cool story, Always wondered if this song was in reference to Winnetka Il. and now I know, thanks!

YOUR UNCLE IS BOB HAGGART?!
Danny Antonucci sent me here.
Whouh! I would have LOVED for a man to look at me the way Mr Crosby was looking at that cute chorus girl.
Yes it was a true favorite in high school ... and once again, even now. Imagine dancing to it. And in truth we did. It was great.
What a classic. Drummers listen up. Old maybe but what energy.

I love this song! The Whistler in the beginning reminds me of my husband. He's the only one who whistles with his tongue like that guy. So sexy 😊
Damn. So good.
Il y a 50 ans que je recherchais ça ! Un vinyle super usé, disparu dans un déménagement . MERCI !!!
Love this song.
Excellent version. Love it
My dad used to whistle the opening and closing portions of this song just the same way as they sound here.
It's a shame you have to buy music books just to learn one of The Bob cats amazing songs. Many of them have been lost to the secrets of time.
One of the most under-rated ensembles of all time.
Winnetka, IL. Village / Town where Home Alone was filmed.

Sounds just like his big brother, Bing.
I've never heard the slow take of this tune. Kinda like it a lot.

Winnetka is one of the richest suburbs of America
Wrong Winnetka, CA 🤦🏻♂️ in the western San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles brought me here 🤷🏻♂️
Trumpet solo by Yank Lawson after his sojourn with Tommy Dorsey.
This song sounds evil in that delicious sort of way.

Ed Edd 'n' Eddy Intro♥ :3
Hello, Ed boy...
Bob and Ray--what a combo!
Met Ray at a Winter Carnival concert at Middlebury College in 1957. He was playing with Jack Teagarden at the time.
Is that plunger mute trumpet solo written down anywhere?
Singularity probably, but most people who I've talked to have played it by ear
big noise from beryan
at 1:54 a Famous Guitarist: Django Reinhardt plays a drum solo then a Drum-Bass duo. Both awesome!
Still, I'm surprised to see Him here.
I believe that is Ray Bauduc and yes, he is a dead ringer for Django.
@hep2jive I want that back drop.
Who talks in the beginning and put the record on?
Makes me think of Bioshock , just like Artie's Nightmare
Bette Miller does a great version of this big band classic
Oh it's " big noise blew in from winnetka " I thought is was bluin or aomething
+Tindle Banana No, Bluin is what they put in Final Touch--for extra whitening.
What's this clip from? Like the intro bit.
+Will Kennard Hi Will, It's from Reveille with Beverly starring Ann Miller. Great WWII flick filled with Big Band Swing sounds.
Is this version on spotify?
Ummm this is like about 1/2 speed from the versions I have heard.
What's the name of that vocal group?
1:56
What the name movie?
Reveille with Beverly (1943)
Bill A thanks
anybody else here from Theodore Sturgeon's "The Perfect Host"? :)
Could any one name the singers.
El 18
hes good at singing it but I prefer the whistle version
I think Bob sang better than brother Bing Crosby.
Winnetka is a lovely suburb of Chicago - northwest side.
They call that a “groove”.........
Yes indeed they do! You must be a dancer.
Why dies Bob look like a giant?
Love the song but Bob Crosby looks very awkward throughout the whole thing!
Is that a racist kick/bass drum?
No.
terrible lyrics-it's like they didn't even try
