In this very year, 1958, I was in first grade. I'd seen "Bubbles the Whale" on TV commercials promoting visits to Marineland of the Pacific, and my first grade class along with the other two first grade classes in our school took a field trip to Marineland on a school bus. We got to see Bubbles the pilot whale, much to my elation, along with a whole bunch of other sea creatures -- that was a great field trip for first graders!
@Todd: Yes, back when parks like that actually were mainly places to see sea life and trained whales, dolphins, and seals. Now, they've turned them into mostly rides-type amusement parks, with animals here and there. :( I went to Sea World in 2018 and I was so disappointed that it was so different from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, when Sea World was actually a marine animal showcase! They also had too many shows that had nothing to do with the animals!
I was born in 1965 and I didn't know about this show until last year! Once discovered, I was hooked on this delightfully unique show!!! And it's so wonderful to meet famous people from the past who are "playing" themselves! As for many of them, I've heard their names, but have never seen them! As for ultra famous people from the past, such as Bob Hope or Lucille Ball, it's fun to see them on this show!
It is delightfully addictive! At first, I watched randomly dated programs. Then I wised up, started over at the beginning, and have watched them in chronological order. The comments made make more sense when you've seen the previous week's show and are able to follow the conversation. Despite the fact many decades separate the original air dates and when we're watching the episodes, I feel as if I know Arlene, Bennett, Dorothy, John, Martin and the compliment of other guest panelists. The usual contributors of comments are also familiar. It's a WML? family!
Bennett missed an opportunity to use the book he just published (“The Enemy Camp”) to make a remark about John. Perhaps something to the effect of “And now here comes the general from the enemy camp, looking to confuse and befuddle us, Mr. John Charles Daly.” He still came up with his own cringe-worthy pun nonetheless.
I think the whale trainer at "Marine World" should have said he was originally from Wales (as I assume he was from his accent). I believe that would have thrown the panel off-track, and he would have bagged the whole game!
519DJW -- Not "Marine World", actually, but Marineland of the Pacific, which opened in 1954 and closed in 1987. It was located right on the Pacific near Portuguese Bend on the Palos Verdes Peninsula in Los Angeles County. Sea World in San Diego, which was bigger and splashier (no pun intended) simply because it opened 10 years later on a much larger piece of land with a bigger scope in mind, bought out Marineland of the Pacific and closed it, moving all of Marineland's killer whales, pilot whales, dolphins, porpoises, etc. to Sea World. In this episode of WML, the card used the name "California Marineland" just to differentiate it from the older Marineland of Florida, which would have been better known to people on the east coast.
In comments I've posted on other "What's My Line" videos, I've been a little harsh on Bennett Cerf. But I've been watching him more closely over the last several new videos (to me) and find him to be a delight, actually. I enjoy his boyish smile when he is surprised or endeared by the contestant's/guest's comments once their respective occupation is revealed to us.
Nice voice, not as deep or as smooth as Bing, but still lovely. I always thought that Dennis Crosby looked a lot like his uncle Bob. Goodlooking family...especially Bing...they all had beautiful eyes.
Was Very surprised to see Arlene reference Bing's baldness. He was extremely sensitive about that, and it was the cause of a long standing feud between him and that as* clown, Jerry Lewis.
Sharon Collie Oh, *Absolutely!* You misunderstood me. I *totally* love Bob. I collect all and any of his movies that I can find, and I watch anything pertaining to him, that pops up on my CZcams. I was just disappointed because so many guests have a friend with them; and although Bob appears on this show with his daughter, and at another time with Lucy, I was hoping that he also appeared with Bing, since they were such close friends, and had made so many "Road to" Movies. But alas, I don't believe that Bing ever appeared on this show, although Bob signed in as Bing, on an episode. 😉lol
Since June 15, 1958, humanity has advanced and figured out how to put far more than just one whale into captivity and how to make far more than just one whale "suffer a man to ride on its back". A proud achievement, which benefits everyone greatly!
David H. Brown writes THICK; or maybe it’s HEAVY📝. I wonder if that says something about him 🤔. My son writes very SMALL 📝 just like my dad, but they’re nothing alike. I’m so GLAD 🥰‼️ Mr. Brown’s voice sounds and he looks like he could fit in with actors of these earlier times, like Ronald Colman, Errol Flynn, Cary Grant, etc. Speaking of Ronald Colman and Cary Grant, my favorite movie that they’re in is called “The Talk of the Town”. It’s an old black & white film, but it’s great!!!

@z Yup, humans are a part of nature too.

Poor little lonely pilot whale needs to with his own kind, whether in captivity or the wild.
Thank you so much for uploading these. I was born in the 80s so I didn't even discover this show until two years ago. It's wonderful!

Welcome to a better USA than you have ever known.
Delightful personality of Bob Crosby shines through. :)
That one man band was one of the funniest contestants ever. I wish he'd had more time onscreen.
I was a fan of Bob Crosby, loved his singing and his band!!!
I love how the second contestant smiled and rolled her eyes at John Daly's explanation 15:19
I love the transatlantic accents in this video
That first contestant looks like a movie star from the 40s.
I hated when they rushed the last contestant. It was so inconsiderate and thoughtless to the contestants. I’m sure many of them were disappointed.
I was happy to find this episode. It aired on the day I was born!
bob crosby is amazing
I initially misread the title.... I thought it said Bing Crosby!
Mrs. Farrell had a nice face which probably threw people off when it came to her profession. Thanks for the video.
I dont think its allowed to recognize that sort of thing anymore.
Complements are sexist
He is so handsome and distinguished similar to Douglas Fairbanks Jr
Bob Crosby sounds more like Bing than Bing

The best puns are always cringe-worthy.
I have to confess that I'd never even heard of Bob Crosby until I watched this episode.
Me too
@@IAintTheDaddyMaury: You both need to do penance. :D
The one man band guy came there for one "gig" and ended up getting another, good for him.
He had a music group that was Dixeland oriented .
he sounds JUST like bing. it woulda been rough to live in Bings shadow
You betcha!
Always though Bob was much cuter than Bing.
No way, Bing was the looker in my view.
Bob was cuter, and I'd rather listen to his music any day.

Wales, Whales...
Also there is a Marine World (later merged with the Africa USA wild game show) in the San Francisco Bay area.
@@ToddSF I am from the Palos Verdes peninsula and I went to Marineland quite often growing-up
Welsh poet Dylan Thomas said if he'd been an Eskimo, he'd have lived on whales instead of in it.

Bob crossby way more talent and looks and appeal than bing
Wrong again.

Nonsense. Complete and utter nonsense.
Classic american TV show. Bob is better than Bing in my opinion though.
*_Whale Trainer at California Marineland_*
*_Bill Collector_*
*_One Man Band_*
The gap between the left and right halves of the "K" in the Kellogg's logo has since been closed.
The one man band guy is hilarious!
The bill collector was an excellent contestant.
Here we go again. Why is Robert Q. Lewis' name NEVER listed as a panelist on the top line?
the whale trainer is so well spoken, he could easily be a celebrity mystery guest himself
So disappointed. I was trying to find Bing Crosby on this show, but only found Bob.

Interesting fact, Bubbles the pilot whale passed away in 2016.
Was Arlene wearing black? Her ex-husband Neil Agnew had died four days earlier.
