Extreme Car Audio Makeover - 1990 Mazda Miata - From Hot Mess to the Sound of Success

  • This 1990 Mazda Miata came into our shop in need of an EXTREME car audio makeover. The exterior and interior of this car was absolutely mint, but the stereo was an absolute hot mess. From the revealing lone low lying red crimp connector hanging just below the dash and the glaring screw in the center of the dash holding the radio in, it was obvious this would be a total gut and redo resulting in an extreme car audio makeover.
These car audio makeovers are some of our favorite types of car audio installation projects. John loves to strip down a hacked up car audio installation, fix what is broken, add in all the missing clips and start from scratch with a clean and professional car stereo installation. If you want to see a satisfying extreme car audio makeover, sit down and grab your popcorn. Follow along as this husband and wife team take you back to the 90's and reveal an extreme car stereo install before and after.
This 1990 Mazda Miata extreme car audio makeover video features a Kenwood DMX958XR stereo, JL Audio C2-650X coaxial speakers, and an Alpine KTA-450. We also re-purposed the client's existing Boss 4-channel amp, Kicker Comp C 10-inch subwoofer and Miata headrest speakers. If you enjoy this kind of car stereo restoration, please consider hitting that like and subscribe button.

Love your work Guys; I did a similar install on my 1990 MX5 LE (Miata to you) Although my wiring was a tad neater, I still had to deal with the grunge era alarm/immobiliser. Fun times! Again...nice work!

Thank you so much for your kind words and recognition! These old Mazda's are a blast to drive and a pleasure to work on. I think it must feel better to drive your car knowing all the old grungy wiring has been fixed up :)

How long did it take you guys?
I have just the same car, and plan on upgrading the audio system (have professionals do it).

Hi there - this took about 3-4 days between the stereo work and alternator wiring, but keep in mind filming did add time to the process.

Any chance you'll review the Kenwood DMX 1057xr / DNR 1007xr? I'm very interested in the head unit and you do a great job going over all the technical specs

Thank you for that, I really appreciate it. I had not considered doing the DMX1057XR just because I thought so many others had already covered it, but perhaps they haven't gone into the nitty gritty details like I like to. I will add it to my list, that is one of my favorite head units. I love the sound quality, screen quality, audio control features and the knob!

@@carstereochick The knob is a huge plus for me. I have the Alpine iLX 007 in my 2015 wrangler, was the first aftermarket Apple Carplay radio at the time, i still have the wrangler and the radio. I hate that it doesnt have a volume knob and swore i'd never buy another without the knob. The Kenwood is so nice, but I'm not a huge fan of the floating display. I love the Stinger but there are some things about it that i dont like (ie SXM doesnt show album art, etc). Do you know if the 1057xr can be flush mounted like the stinger? I havent found any mounting builds like that online yet. The Maestro RR2 module is a huge plus for the kenwood though...
The Kenwood will be for my 2022 Tacoma. I have the premium JBL system but its garbage and i hate that the voice sound (Siri, texts, navigation) only come through the front tweeters and are barely audible over road noise at max volume. And theres no way to adjust this or change it to play though the rest of the speakers. Unless you know a fix lol

I remember the iLX-007, that was a cool unit. Very simplistic in design and layout. I've not seen or heard of anyone flush mounting the DMX1057XR in a JK/JKU. I've seen it done in a JLU (ribbon cable extension - hid the brain). I supposed with time, patience and custom work, it could be done, possibly even using the Stinger install kit as a template to build off of. As far as the 22 Tacoma, I was not aware the factory CarPlay notification sounds only come through the dash tweeters. That's got to be hard to hear. I can see Toyota easily correcting that with a software update, but am not aware of any. First time I've heard of that issue. We just did a full system in a 22 Tacoma a couple weeks ago, Alpine iLX-F509, eXcelon speakers, amps and subs. It sounded fantastic. That stock head unit is trash.

  • @Pete.across.the.street

Any car that has any Boss equipment in it is almost guaranteed to also have a hot mess of wires.

    • @carstereochick

I mentioned in the end that after we did all that work the client came back and had us wire up a new set of seats and run a new alternator wire for him. This Miata has been totally revamped! Get this - when he came to pick it up, after all this work and how clean this car is, he informed us he uses it as a track car. We're sure he'll have a lot of fun with it, but we REALLY hope he doesn't wreck it!!!
