Rob's major in college was opera. He last sang it 15 years ago. He could easily sing Opera if he wanted to. Austin graduated in musical theater. That's why Austin Kept looking at Rob. They both were trained differently.

    • @Brirend
      @Brirend Před rokem +12

Rob's major was in vocal performance and part of that included training in opera and several other techniques. Rob's voice teacher from when he was in college said that he has the capability to sing any genre professionally. (show tunes, gospel, R&B, opera, etc)

    • @davelister2
      @davelister2 Před rokem +5

I believe that Austin was watching Rob for his ques, especially the last couple of lines, and while we don't hear the singing we see they'd still be singing it and if they were just going with it they'd get out of time, Rob, with his particular operatic training would know the timing better, even in a custom arrangement so Austin was looking for the moment Rob started to prepare to sing so he could too.

I've watched a lot of reactions to this recording and I'm always a little surprised that nobody ever mentions my absolute favorite moment: when Rob's left eyebrow lifts as he goes up for that high note on the second syllable of the final "vin-CE-ró." I'm sure it wasn't done consciously--he was simply putting his whole heart into it. Austin is amazing and everyone who's ever heard him knows it, but this was Rob's masterpiece.

Austin was singing classical, Rob was singing opera...it made a lovely crossover.
Austin was a bit too nasal and his larynx was in the wrong location but it didn't matter...it was lovely.
Rob is a powerhouse in everything he does and he would have had a very celebrated opera career if he had wanted.
I'm glad that they both chose to do a capella.

Thanks for the analysis and reaction. Like to hear from the voice instructors. After hearing the first few notes from alone, I was shocked. I knew he had a powerful voice, but the tone was what took me by surprise. And Austin hitting that high note was glorious along with the very end. Don't worry about us trying to sing, everyone's roaming around singing "Vincero X 3".

Clearly -- clearly! -- Rob could have pursued a career as an operatic tenor. Austin is unbelievable as well, with a very reedy tenor voice that (as you mention) seems to know no limits. But Rob's rich and elegant tone is just a revelation for me, given that I've always (foolishly!) considered him a "backup" vocalist. He just blows me away here.

Their voices complimented each other so well because of the differences in their timbre. Rob is more verging on a higher baritone, who is also a tenor 2, in my opinion; Rob has a voice built to be an operatic tenor with that darker sound. Rob has a crazy range Bb1-G#5, which gives credence to my opinion of him being a baritenor.

  • @rickieodem488

  • @Rosannasfriend

My voice teacher used to tell me the same thing about singing classically even if I’m a contemporary singer. About eight years ago when I was taking lessons, I told her that I wanted to learn how to be a very agile singer with runs and melisma’s. And she said the best way to do that was to just try to sing classically. That was how she learned. I just think it’s interesting you’re saying the same thing. I highly agree with you that the human voice can sing any genre either, I think anybody who truly wants to can you just take the time and learn and practice the technique and they can do it all. Watching these metal singers like Devin Townsend and floor Jansen has shown me that. Heck, even Dimash can sing metal and classical in one song. He’s got the distortion and the rasp and the growls when he wants to.

  • @Rosannasfriend
    @Rosannasfriend Před rokem +14

As you can see Austin has less of a classical voice because he has less classical training than Rob, so he was more of a crossover sound than Rob. But they both did really really well in their different styles.

Great Reaction! I am not a big fan of opera except maybe some Andrea Bocelli & a few others. But I have always appreciated the talent it takes to sing opera. I was pretty impressed with Rob & Austin's version of Nessun Dorma. I have heard this famous song done by Pavarotti. I think I was more surprised by Rob's range & powerful delivery than even Austin's. Pretty good for a couple of country boys! Nice to see them dressed up in suits & looking classy.

This was lovely! And your reactions of ooh and ah and melt-into-the-chair were on point with mine the first time I'd heard it, and this time, too! Rob is absolutely stunning in this. Love, love, love his operatic voice and the deep, sink-into-it-velvet tenor. It is like rocking in a hammock in the sun. Austin was stunning in his mixed no-ceiling voice (not only in register, but also it sounded kind of half contemporary, half classical, almost). Lovely to listen to. They both did a stellar job! Love the flexibility, and the stretching of their skills (not that I know anything about the training of either, so it is possible that one or both have had classical training. It certainly sounded as if Rob had!). Yes to the value of a wide range training, including classic technique for contemporary singers. Look at Floor and Lara Fabian. They both have classic training, and has become part of their toolbox (totally get it on the snoot-factor, though ... we see it in ballet and contemporary dance, too ...). This was so much fun! Also, waiving at Milo, who seems unimpressed with his stealth position being uncovered. I think he much prefers to be the hidden-pooch-on-lap :) Too cute!

Rob is classically trained but had not used those vocal genera in about 15 years.
Austin is theatrically trained. While he does not have the power Rob has, I love the performance of both of them.
Though not in this group. Avi Kaplan is also classically trained and had just been hired by the L.A. Opera House as their Bass the day before Scott of Pentatonix called him needing a bass for the up and coming Pentatonix.
Avi loves A Capella and that was all he needed to hear. His goal was never to be an opera singer but to learn house the voice works and how to properly use it. I suspect Rob and Austin also had those thoughts in mind as they trained as well.
Avi has also headed into a modified country/western genera, of recent.
Here is a recording form the past spring working with and in Shooter Jennings studios.

Hi Christi. This is probably the 30th time I've listened to your reaction of this song. I cried again. (old softy).
I just love these guys ( yet they still won't adopt me ). I will say that like most of the reactors, I found Rob's voice
to be mind blowing and Pavarotti - like. Amazing! But unlike a lot of folks, I loved Austin's voice on this song
    just as much.
When I was growing up (60's), my father thought it would be fun on Sat. mornings (early) to put his favorite Opera
singer on the stereo. ( on stun of course ). His favorite was the great Mario Lanza. (I ended up liking him as well)
(Mario, not my father). When I hear Austin, I hear Mario. You certainly have a lot more expertise on this topic,
but would you agree there's some Lanza in Austin's voice? I love his part of the song, and the warmth of his
smile when he sings. Just awesome! (Rob's passion in this song is a real tear creator as well.) And one final thing.
Am I the only one who thinks that Austin (in his Opera duds), looks just like a Nobleman from the 1700's with his
fancy suit and long curly hair? When he's standing in that church, and the camera's at the right angle, Austin looks
like he could be Mozart's buddy. (Just sayin' ). Keep up your wonderful reactions and I'll look forward to tearing up at the next one.

Perhaps, opera singing has been thought of as the pinnacle of the singing experience.
Before electronics was used for sound, the sound in a theatre was the closest thing to magnified sound, and opera singers were taught to project without assistance.
But now, opera misses out on the advantages of this technology, as it tends to hang on to earlier traditions.
Having the modern electronic adjusted sound has made many singers get by without all that training.
But listening to these cross style singers that are breaking out of the ordinary standards is truly amazing, and in many cases a soundgasm.

The clash between Classical and Contemporary styles is very evident in the competition format as seen in the various nations participation in The Voice. Often times a contestant will sing Opera or a Theatrical piece and it's rare to get an all chair turn let alone even two chairs. The comments frequently made when all the judges turn after the piece is over is, "I think you sound really good, but I don't know what to do with you." This is due to the production companies main focus on Pop music and hence the choice of judges. To me these often times Pop Music icons who are utilized not only as judges, but also instructors are essentially displaying artistic cowardice. The irony though is the audience at these events have more appreciation and no bias by the way they respond to these wonderful performances. When the winners go on tour I'm sure the production entity is wondering whether or not they can get a packed house in all the arenas they are required to fulfill for a years touring engagement.

Milo is awesome !! Rob had opera training in college, but hasn't sung any for about 15 years....until Austin asked him to be a part of this project. Amazing and stunning but after that shock wore off, I wasn't really surprised as I have a lot of respect for what these men can do with their voices. Thanks for reacting to it Kristi....Merry Christmas ! 🧑‍🎄🎅🎄

Such a treat! But seriously, Rob sounds like a different artist than we hear when he sings with Home Free!
I don't care for opera, but these two "tried" and did what I didn't expect--they made me want to watch it over and over again. Who knew? 🤭

It’s so good. I thought I was going to be rickrolled and then this happened. Rob studied opera in college but that was years ago. Austin was trained in classical theater. I thought they were fantastic. Good reaction!!😍

Please check out Simon Khorolskiy's video, 'Poor Wayfaring Stranger - Epic Version Feat. Chris Rupp', Chris Rupp is a former member of Home Free and their beatboxer's brother. He left Home Free (amicably) to pursue a solo career and was succeeded by Adam Chance. The song is amazing and, I didn't *know* that I needed to hear a couple verses of Wayfaring Stranger in Russian until it happened.

I heard somewhere that Robb is the best singer in the group I Love Floor sing O Mio Bambino Caro at her Revamp Concert. Tarja is amazing in her Classical music. Live u Christi

Check this out: JARKKO AHOLA NESSUN DORMA MTV3 (Only 2 min. 44 sec.)
It is from a TV format where singers from different genres have to sing all kinds of songs - heavy, pop, disco, opera... It is a friendly competition, not too serious but one singer has to leave after each episode decided by the vote of the viewers.
Jarkko is a heavy rock singer, who has never taken singing lessons, but I think he does a great job singing opera style. The boss lady of The Finnish National Opera agrees with me. You can see her reaction in the middle of the performance and after! She was one of the judges.
    Merry Yuletide!

I think it's wonderful of Austin to use his channel as a showcase for Rob's talent. Rob had more classical training than Austin, who focused on Musical Theater, and yet he allowed (and even encouraged) his friend and bandmate to shine on his channel.

I've watched Pavarotti sing this one, but he doesn't seem to do the body language that Rob does. Rob's got the opera voice plus the emoting, while Austin doesn't have quite the voice placement for this, but still sounds and looks amazing. One of Home Free's strengths is their ability to make you FEEL the music. Plus, the boys do clean up right pretty, don't they?

you should listen to a CZcams clip called "Britney does opera?"...Britney Slates from Unleash the Archers, and Fang von Wrathenstein from Lords of the Trident"....they were having a conversation on Skype; both got into the wine, and wound up doing "Brindisi" from La Traviata.....it was amazing......classical music and opera are heavy metal without electricity

I think you're the BEST Vocal Couch on CZcams because you watch the videos in its entirety before you deconstruct it. However, I still don't understand why you have NEVER considered deconstructing Home Free's version of "Do You Hear What I Hear?" from about 7 or 8 years ago. I've tried to suggest it to you MANY TIMES.The thing is that you NEED to listen to it ALL THE WAY THROUGH FIRST in order to get the full impact of it.

One thing about classical singing is that because I don't understand the lyrics, I can enjoy the emotions and intricate details of the voice itself. But the biggest drawback of classical music is that I don't understand the words. And I have no intention of learning multiple languages just to comprehend the lyrics, and when classical songs are translated to English, they often lose their original quality. Similarly, English songs might also lose something when translated to other languages. While I can enjoy an occasional classical performance, it is not part of my daily music playlist.

Hey! I've just been watching your videos reacting to Monica Naranjo.
Now I would like to present you another Catalan singer, well, lots actually, it's a collab, but she is the queen that rules this song: she represented Spain in Eurovision 1989 with the song "Nacida para Amar" (Born to love), she took the role of Donna Sheridan in the Spanish version of the musical Mamma Mia and she is a vocal coach as well, in fact, she was the director of the academy in that TV Talent Show you first saw Monica Naranjo singing Europa by the way. Anyway, I'm talking about the one and only, Nina.
Here you have the song I want you to react to:
    czcams.com/video/g_Smki5s3aY/video.html
Here you have some different and interesting voices you can react to, not just Nina.
Nice video! Best regards from Barcelona!
